To not give the postman a Christmas bung

MurkyMo · 18/12/2025 06:38

...to not give the postman a Christmas card with a fiver in it. Husband wants to but I say no. As for the bin men, not a chance !

What do you do?

We haven't had the same postman for more than two days in a row for years.

The bin men are an absolute nightmare. The old crew were brilliant and we'd leave tins of coke and crisps etc regularly for their break. The new lot not a chance.

scalt · 18/12/2025 07:09

I don't believe in all this tip, tip, tipping. It adds up. They are paid to do their job. I don't expect "Christmas tips" on my job. I might give a tip at any time of year if someone goes out of their way to be helpful, but certainly not because... "it's Christmas!!!!!!" (a phrase I loathe).

Yes, call me Scrooge: sometimes I think he was misunderstood.

Taweofterror · 18/12/2025 07:09

Calling it a 'bung' is an odd way of putting it. It suggests your husband wants to bribe him. It's a tip surely? I don't give mine a tip. I am considering giving my Evri courier one though. Evri have such a bad rep but we've had loads delivered from him lately and all got here safely

Sartre · 18/12/2025 07:11

Our postie is a Grandad of a child in DS’s class so see him on the school run, I think it would be frankly embarrassing to offer him a fiver.

Lennonjingles · 18/12/2025 07:13

We give £20 for postman, who we’ve had for years. Our excellent Evri driver will get £10, paperboy £10 and the bin men get a fiver each, as will my Tesco delivery driver next week.

MermaidMummy06 · 18/12/2025 07:14

I don't tip anyone. I don't want to encourage the culture.

Although I'm not UK and people are paid well. Plus I'm pissed this year as our own Christmas bonus 'profit share' has quietly gone away. It's been reducing for a few years and just not mentioned this tear. And yes, the business is booming. Boss's wife just took a luxurious break, back for 3 days & off abroad to Africa for a month.

bugalugs45 · 18/12/2025 07:16

I gave my postman £10 in a card yesterday , and a tin of posh biscuits ! He’s been a legend this year , we have a chat if I’m in and I’ve never had to visit to the sorting office as he hides my parcels where I ask , worth every penny ! But I don’t usually tip , this is the first postman that we’ve had regularly and he’s excellent 😊

KaySam · 18/12/2025 07:18

They get nothing from us,post man comes maybe once a week practically boots the door when we have a parcel instead of ringing the bell,
bin men expect us to have the bin at the edge of our property yet leave it 3 doors down in the middle of the pavement,

ManyATrueWord · 18/12/2025 07:22

I stopped tipping the postman when we stopped having "our" postman.

Curiousrobin · 18/12/2025 07:24

PrioritisePleasure24 · 18/12/2025 06:44

We rarely get post and it’s not always the same person tbh. So nope.

What I was thinking- people actually get the same postman/woman everyday? We don't.

Allthecoloursoftherainbow4 · 18/12/2025 07:04

I've never understood why people tip certain occupations but not others. Are you tipping your nurse when you go to hospital?
Are you tipping the checkout person at the supermarket? Of course you aren't.

Tipping random people like hairdressers and postmen is such weird unnecessary behaviour.

I never see the same post person anyway, nor do I get daily post delivered it's once a week max! I've had about 50 posties this year why on earth would I tip any!

I never tip the hairdresser and always feel they hate me for it. But they're still not getting any extra

Same with binmen here. They used to shout and roar on purpose to upset people. They only did it when someone was out on the street. There must have been complaints as they've stopped now. But they're still dicks

We have about five different people delivering our post - I’m certainly not tipping all of them 😂

This thread just proves there’s no cost of living crisis. Middle England is still thriving and throwing money around.

Shedeboodinia · 18/12/2025 07:32

I have never tipped the postman. I have never seen him/her, post comes always when we are out. Most people are out when their post comes.
If my postman was excellent and I always had a little chat with them and they had gone over and above then I possibly would.
But as it stands, I get more things delivered by delivery drivers than the postman.
Plus they seem to only deliver me bills, not things I want like a cheque from the lottery or a letter from an heir hunter saying I am inheriting a family fortune.

I leave a tub of chocs at the door with a note saying merry Christmas delivery people help yourself.
I also leave a tub of chocs for the recycling and bin guys.

They are crap jobs, especially at this time of year, really hard work. So I think it’s nice to let them know they’re appreciated

Totally agree with this.
Being a postman is very hard work. I had to help out with a campaign delivering leaflets several years ago, it was very back breaking. It gave me a new respect for the postman.
Horrible, filthy letter boxes a lot of which were at ground level, dogs who went crazy (I love dogs) and out in all weathers.
It is not the postman's fault about the number of deliveries it is Royal mail who are at fault for that!
We give our postman £20, he is worth every penny and deserves a thank you at Christmas.

I don't think a fiver once a year for great service is throwing money away

50 quid is mental tho!

I am tipping my postman £20 this year, he’s a lovely, cheery chap, looks after my parcels. He goes above and beyond. I used to have a lovely Evri driver and tipped her last year the same but she quit this year.

pilates · 18/12/2025 07:39

I’m in the camp of why do you tip certain professions and not others? We don’t have the same postman/postwoman anyway and you are very lucky if you are in a position to give away £50 so freely.

gogomomo2 · 18/12/2025 07:40

Never heard of anyone doing this!

OhDear111 · 18/12/2025 07:44

@MurkyMo No, not £5, but lots are chucking money around everywhere. These services are paid for by council tax or via payments we make for the service. I find it odd we choose some services and not others.

Well I think postmen have a tough job and some go above and beyond and so people like to show appreciation for that.

I don't, but might if I hadn't just spent over £100 on all the staff at my kids schools (2× SEN kids with different 1:1's on different days plus school transport driver & escort). Can't really afford to increase the pool of gift recipients.

MyOliveStork · 18/12/2025 07:52

We always leave a pack of beers or tin of chocolates out for the bin men, every year without fail. Postman no because they change all the time and we don’t feel they do as important a job as they used to (or as efficient sadly).
