...to not give the postman a Christmas card with a fiver in it. Husband wants to but I say no. As for the bin men, not a chance !

What do you do?

We’re giving our postman £50 because we’ve moved and changed our house name and he just sorts it all out.
hes awesome

Luxio · 18/12/2025 06:42

No Christmas tips here. We're lucky to get post more than twice a week at most and on about 3 occasions this year our whole street has been missed during routine bin collections.

Kilopascal · 18/12/2025 06:43

If he wants to, why would you say no?

gerispringer · 18/12/2025 06:43

My OH is on first name terms with the postmen and knows all their family stories etc. he gives them a tub of chocs and a tenner each. There are 3 different bin teams who each get a tub of chocs left on top of appropriate bin. We get great service from them all the year round. Our Evri delivery driver is excellent too. He may get some chocs as well.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 18/12/2025 06:44

We rarely get post and it’s not always the same person tbh. So nope.

Coconutter24 · 18/12/2025 06:45

I’ve never given the postman a Christmas gift. If your DH wants to and sort it out why would you say no? Why does he need your permission to spend £5?

Notmyreality · 18/12/2025 06:47

No tips here. They are doing the job they are paid to do. Why would I tip them? I don’t tip the people on the checkout at Tesco or the people behind the counter at any of a hundred shops I go in. Or my Evri driver or my Amazon driver(s)…..

Dont tip any of them. They are doing their job at the end of the day!

pinkdelight · 18/12/2025 06:49

Never tipped postman or bin men, don’t really see the latter anyway. We just tip milkman, not least as there’s more of a system for that - he leaves us a card in the box with the mill bottles, we leave him one with tip in. But if your DH wants to tip someone, I’d leave that up to him.

verycloakanddaggers · 18/12/2025 06:50

It's up to your DH if he wants to, it's a small gesture and he surely doesn't have to ask permission to spend £5?

CarrotSeeds · 18/12/2025 06:51

I give our postie a card with £20 in it. He is fab. He always leaves any parcels in a safe place, he’s really pleasant and chatty and is lovely with our dog. Cheers Keith, Marry Christmas 🎄 🎁 .

Why not?

Zanatdy · 18/12/2025 06:52

I have never given to the postmen or binmen. I’ll give the dog groomer an extra tenner today for pre christmas groom but if he wasn’t due one, then I wouldn’t have bothered.

Because I'm a control freak 🙃

I'm not. I'm just curious about what other people do. We actually do give him a card and a fiver. Evri guy got the same until Evri cut his money so he's gone now. .

We usually do a fiver if we remember. Tenner for the previous postman who was a particularly kind and helpful soul. Forgot about the bin men.

Thaimonstera · 18/12/2025 07:02

I leave a tub of chocs at the door with a note saying merry Christmas delivery people help yourself.
I also leave a tub of chocs for the recycling and bin guys.

They are crap jobs, especially at this time of year, really hard work. So I think it’s nice to let them know they’re appreciated

OhDear111 · 18/12/2025 07:03

We don’t have a regular postman/woman. Neither do we get a regular service. Bin service is a joke and we are frequently missed.

I don’t tip anyone. In general, people seem to reserve it for some trades/jobs but exclude others.

Allthecoloursoftherainbow4 · 18/12/2025 07:04

I've never understood why people tip certain occupations but not others. Are you tipping your nurse when you go to hospital?
Are you tipping the checkout person at the supermarket? Of course you aren't.

Tipping random people like hairdressers and postmen is such weird unnecessary behaviour.

I never see the same post person anyway, nor do I get daily post delivered it's once a week max! I've had about 50 posties this year why on earth would I tip any!

Mooninjune · 18/12/2025 07:04

I had absolutely no idea giving Christmas tips to people was still a thing. I thought this was a tradition that died out many years ago.

Our post has been atrocious for a few years now - if we get a delivery once a week we are doing well. And if we are expecting anything important we generally have to go into the sorting office to ask if it's arrived. It's a long time since we have had a regular postie.

We don't have a newspaper boy/ girl, or a milk man, and I don't know if the bin men are the same regular team or not because I never see them. So I'm afraid Christmas tips are an anachronism here.

Why do you think pushing post through a letter box is harder work than someone hauling stock about in a cold supermarket warehouse or caring for sick people?
I think delivering post is a pretty easy job I mean what exactly is hard about it!

LessOfThis · 18/12/2025 07:07

I don’t get extra income at Christmas 🤷🏻‍♀️
