Delivery driver let himself in and dog jumped up on him. Was I wrong?

I’m dog sitting for my uncle this week. His 10 year old chocolate lab is very friendly and has never shown any signs of aggression or attacked anyone. He still acts like a puppy and gets really excited. But I get that not everyone likes or feels comfortable around dogs.

There have been a few parcels delivered here this week, and I’ve taken them in without any issues. There’s a set of stairs leading up from the front door into the hallway, with another door in between. I make sure to close that door when I answer the front door to keep the dog from getting out or jumping on anyone. Earlier today a delivery guy knocked while I was in the bathroom, and then he just let himself in. He got annoyed because the dog jumped up on him and then raised his voice at me, saying I should have answered the door. I was just coming out of the bathroom when all of this happened.

I want to make it clear that he opened the front door, walked up the stairs, and opened the second door. The dog was in the kitchen, heard him and ran up to him. He could have easily left the parcel in the hallway instead or tried to deliver the parcel another day. AIBU? You can’t just walk into someone’s house and get upset about a dog being there, right?

I’ve learned my lesson to always keep the door locked now (
which I usually do at my own house), but after taking the dog for a walk this morning, I just completely forgot to lock it again!

Assuming it’s not a communal front door but is actually the front door to a single property then WOW that guy is so unreasonable. He basically trespassed uninvited on your property

WakeupWho · 17/12/2025 16:11

YANBU - he's unbelievable for letting himself in even one door, let alone two. Hopefully that'll teach him not to now!

TeenageSu1cideDontDoit · 17/12/2025 16:11

YANBU! You don’t walk into someone’s house uninvited and then complain when their dog jumps on you! Especially if he could have just left the parcel inside the front door.

BMW6 · 17/12/2025 16:12

WTF! Entirely his fault for trespassing!!!!!

LighthouseLED · 17/12/2025 16:12

Completely inappropriate for a delivery driver to just let himself in - I’d actually be complaining about that.

He’s lucky he just got an overenthusiastic Labrador rather than a guard dog / guard cat

Celestialmoods · 17/12/2025 16:13

I’d make a complaint to his employer tbh. Strange men walking into peoples homes unannounced is not ok, regardless of the dog.

BlondeBonBon · 17/12/2025 16:15

Does he know your uncle or usually carry things in the house for him? We have a great postie and he goes above and beyond.

Gasbox · 17/12/2025 16:16

Mine would have done a lot worse than jumping up, he should count himself lucky his impatience/rudeness didn't get him savaged!

MotherTuckinGenius · 17/12/2025 16:25

My old lab was an overgrown softy but any person letting themselves into HER home would have found themselves pinned against the wall - as one of my husband’s employees found out one day! Labs can be big goofballs but still know how to protect their humans and property. I miss her sooooooo much!

Yes that’s right, it’s a front door to a single property!

You’re absolutely not at fault here. He walked into the property opened 2 doors. Does he not expect people to have pets? He entered the dogs property. Don’t get me wrong I’ve had drivers drop it in my front hall but never walked in with anything unless they offer to carry something in. X

SockBanana · 17/12/2025 16:35

While anywhere I've lived the delivery driver would be wildly unreasonable to enter the house, I was once house sitting in a remote part of Wales and someone walked into the kitchen to deliver a leaflet (door was open, not just unlocked tbf) . Actually nearly shit myself as I was living in a rough part of London at the time, if someone appeared in your kitchen it'd be unlikely to be friendly.
I laughed about it after, and it did make me realise how different life is in the country.

What sort of area is it?

Twirlywirlywooo · 17/12/2025 16:38

We have a porch door and a front door here and several delivery drivers have let themselves in.
Some even try the doors before they knock/ring the doorbell.

ginasevern · 17/12/2025 17:00

Serves him right if the dog had ripped his face off. I'd turn the tables and complain about him walking into the house and startling a lone woman.

Isobel201 · 17/12/2025 17:08

He let himself in, that's totally on him. And he went in through a hallway to a second door? He could have just left it in the first entry way.

fairlyfairtoday · 17/12/2025 17:15

I'd actually be relieved in this instance he knows there's a dog in the property. There's no way he should just be letting himself in. The cynic in me would say he's an oppertunistic thief who is using this as a reason to see if homes are unlocked and what valuables are around.

Keep the door locked in future.

Ohthatsabitshit · 17/12/2025 17:20

Well my dog would not have been at all welcoming and he’d have shat himself. Complain, because he’s behaving like a thief or worse.

Pollqueen · 17/12/2025 17:24

He's bloody fortunate it was a friendly lab. Could have been an awful lot worse for him

Poodlelove · 17/12/2025 17:25

He is 100 percent in the wrong , no way should he enter someone else's home .

Miss my choccy lab so much .

I would complain

PigeonsandSquirrels · 17/12/2025 17:35

He’s absolutely in the wrong for opening the door and entering someone’s home… what if you’d been starkers?

ErrolTheDragon · 17/12/2025 17:41

wtf? Of course YANBU.

MissMoneyFairy · 17/12/2025 17:44

How did he get in, ard there no locks,

MrTiddlesTheCat · 17/12/2025 17:45

He should be counting his blessings that he didn't get savaged. It's entirely his own fault.

Power26 · 17/12/2025 17:46

He got what he deserved tbh. There was no need for him to come inside. Leave the parcel in the porch, sure. Take the parcel away, sure.

Sevenwondersofthewoo · 17/12/2025 17:47

Mine would have let him in but he wouldn’t be leaving cos they like to lean and sit on you.

we have a postie that knows the dogs and tell em to sod off out of it when delivering.

he was bang out of order doing that.
