Delivery driver let himself in and dog jumped up on him. Was I wrong?

I’m dog sitting for my uncle this week. His 10 year old chocolate lab is very friendly and has never shown any signs of aggression or attacked anyone. He still acts like a puppy and gets really excited. But I get that not everyone likes or feels comfortable around dogs.

There have been a few parcels delivered here this week, and I’ve taken them in without any issues. There’s a set of stairs leading up from the front door into the hallway, with another door in between. I make sure to close that door when I answer the front door to keep the dog from getting out or jumping on anyone. Earlier today a delivery guy knocked while I was in the bathroom, and then he just let himself in. He got annoyed because the dog jumped up on him and then raised his voice at me, saying I should have answered the door. I was just coming out of the bathroom when all of this happened.

I want to make it clear that he opened the front door, walked up the stairs, and opened the second door. The dog was in the kitchen, heard him and ran up to him. He could have easily left the parcel in the hallway instead or tried to deliver the parcel another day. AIBU? You can’t just walk into someone’s house and get upset about a dog being there, right?

I’ve learned my lesson to always keep the door locked now (
which I usually do at my own house), but after taking the dog for a walk this morning, I just completely forgot to lock it again!

He shouldn’t have entered the property imo, but be prepared for lots of people disagreeing as according to mumsnet recently it’s absolutely fine for delivery people to just waltz on in.

MySaintedAunt · 17/12/2025 17:49

Unless your uncle has an arrangement with the delivery firm for parcels to be bought into the house like that he was trespassing, and personally I'd report him to his employers (after i'd removed his testicles from my guard dog's mouth 😬). He was both stupid and inappropriate.

ChequerToRed · 17/12/2025 17:56

Definitely complain to whichever company he’s from. There was nothing stopping him from just opening the first door and leaving the parcel there.
Cheeky fucker, and to then have the brass neck to have a go at you!

Last Easter we ordered 10 portions of fresh fish to be delivered into our porch. . Delivery man left it in the actual hallway of our house and the ddog ate it.
Luckily they only had to replace the fish as raw fish is dangerous to ddogs..

Christ. I once, as a royal mail temp went through the gate to a house to deliver a parcel which had a sign on it saying beware of the dog. I ended up completely cornered by an angry barking Alsatian that I luckily managed to escape. I didn't dare say anything at work because I had knowingly gone through the gate despite the warning. This idiot actually entered the house so he has no recourse

chunkyBoo · 17/12/2025 18:36

He walked into a home and the dog went to him … pretty standard for a dog, he’s the araehole here
saying that I had a Royal Mail bloke knock last week to collect a return, I wasn’t sure which one, so was asking questions, he got the raging are and said ‘look I haven’t got time for this, if you don’t know I’m going’ … I thankfully am 53 and didn’t put up with any shit, it literally took me 30 seconds

Nopenott0day · 17/12/2025 18:44

Mine would have gone for him. They are soft as anything usually. He's lucky he only got jumped on.

Lots of treats for a good dog!

LemaxObsessive · 17/12/2025 18:57

I had this (minus the dog) in an old ground floor flat I lived in years ago. The flats next door had a communal front door which was identical to my front door which was for my sole use. One day I stupidly left it unlocked and as I was drying my hair in my bedroom wrapped in a towel, the postman walked in! Scared the living shit out of me and tbh, him too.
I’m not defending your courier today but could he have assumed it was either a communal entrance or that the upstairs door was a flat door and expected to just open the door and slot the parcel in? I’ve had drivers do that in my porch before

Yes that’s right, it’s a front door to a single property!

Yes he was browsing for an opportunity and tried to deflect onto you (and the dog)

Tigerbalmshark · 17/12/2025 19:05

So you came out of the bathroom and found a strange man in the house, and he is trying to blame you for the dog going for him?

I’d assume thief until proven otherwise, and be complaining to the delivery company.

We have the same 3 posties and the delivery drivers for evri, yodel etc are the same folks everyday, so they know if they open the door they're likely gonna have to say hello to our lab. They do often. But it's a fairly small town, they're all local and we all know each other well, I'd feel awful if he hurt one, but at the same time, that's the risk THEY take by randomly opening a door.

YANBU, the delivery person was an idiot. I had a similar happen to me. A delivery driver reached over the bolted back gate, signposted with "Caution: Loose Dogs," to unlock it while carrying a large box with printed pictures of dogs all over it and the company's name, "X animal feeds." The box was also labelled "raw selection box - XL dog"

He was very upset about being greeted by a Rottweiler who recognised the box, so he was more excited than usual. My response when he loudly complained to me was, "Mate, what the fuck did you expect to be behind the locked gate marked caution, loose dogs, while delivering a box of XL dog food? A llama?"

He scuttled off muttering something about blacklisting me, but I never heard anything about it again, so I assume the company sided with me.
