To think if I’m paying for charging my EV, I shouldn’t pay to park?

First world problems…

But why in certain car parks that have EV facilities, you still have to pay for parking? I’m already paying to charge. I understand the electricity is provided by someone else and not the car park owners, but most EV chargers have a clause to say you can’t over stay the charging time, so it’s not like people actually use it as a parking space, it’s to use a service.

AIBU to think this should be an exception? Or at least worked in to the charging price.

This. OP has a strange way of thinking 🤔

As I’ve said numerous times throughout this thread. I do not intend to park, I intend to charge. If I could charge without physically placing my car on a parking spot, I would. I am not leaving my car and going shopping. I am sitting for 20-30 mins while re-fuelling my vehicle.

@IronicallyNC

Someone has to to ask
So it might as well be me.

Why don't make sure that you have enough power to do what you need to without charging at the car park?

You can, get a charger fitted at home or a plug out the window. Dont take up parking spaces to do so.

Its one of the worst things about EVs that they clog up car parks.

I really enjoyed sitting in traffic today behind a petrol bus. The aroma from its exhaust pipe filled my car through shut windows. It was exquisite.

Sorry you did.

But these are all choices that you make that in end mean that you have to charge your car in a place that you have to pay for parking and charging.

You can buy back up batteries for phones that would mean that you don't need to use the car's power.

and you don't have to use the AC.

I knew an EV owner would understand!

Yep you can spot the illogical ICE car owners!

It’s not about free parking or free charging/petrol. The petrol station doesn’t charge you for storing your car there.

The other day I charged in a car park, paid 10x the rate of electric than I do at home (such that the price paid per mike is the same as my petrol car), paid for the use of the parking space AND had to go back after an hour to move my car to a non EV spot as there was a time limit on using the chargers.

So ICE drivers, tell me again how that’s fair and in any way comparable to how you fuel your cars.

PUGMEISTER21 · 16/12/2025 20:13

MotherTuckinGenius · 16/12/2025 09:09

Totally agree and by that rationale why should I pay to park anywhere when I already pay a shitload of tax when I fill up with diesel 🙄
PS YABU

When Milton Keynes provided free parking for EV's in the charging spaces, people would take the liberry of paring for free in the EV space and not charge, blocking it for people who wanted to use a charger. Now they charge for the space exactly the same as the nornal spaces it doesnt happen anymore.

Yes, but according to some posters you should have better planned for this ok? Made sure you had enough miles before you set off on your journey 🙄

Is there an EV that can go from Oxford to The Highlands on one charge? 🤔

In the years that I’ve owned an EV, for the most part I have enough charge already to get to where I need to go.

Today was one of three times where I needed a top up and the nearest charger was in an ANPR car park. Not due to poor planning, but because something popped up and I needed to make an extra journey. It’s cold, so AC needs to be on to demist and the battery runs down faster in the cold. I had more miles on the car last night than I did this morning.

You should definitely pay because you got one of the best spots in the car park.

As an EV driver, I am not unserstanding your argument. Anybody would think that when they decided to price public charging, they worked out that this will cost the same as filling up with Petrol, who'd have thought? Surely like most EV drivers you are charging at home 90% of the time and reaping the benefits of "filling your tank" for about £10, which for petrol and diesel drivers hasnt happened since about 1983. The chargers arw placed on parking spaces in shopping centres so it is convenient for you to charge at the same time as doing your shopping, if they hadnt put a charger on the space, it would just be a parking space.

IronicallyNC · 16/12/2025 21:00

OP posts:
IronicallyNC · 16/12/2025 21:02

@PUGMEISTER21 my argument was only for times when I’m not out and about mooching in the shops. If I’m going to the shopping centre and convininetly wanting to charge my car while parked at my leisure, then absolutely I am more than happy to pay for parking. If I’m stuck and I need to fuel, at a ridiculously expensive rapid charger, then I’m comparing that to filling at a pump.

OP posts:
movinghomeadvice · 16/12/2025 21:05

I live in a city (not UK) where you don’t pay for parking when charging your EV. The problem is that people plug in the cable and ‘pretend’ to charge, especially in areas with bad parking, so that they can claim a free car space. It literally happened this weekend outside a busy Christmas market. We counted 7 vehicles that were pretending to charge (you can see if they are really charging on the meter station).

I think that they will change the rules soon because people are taking the piss.

PUGMEISTER21 · 16/12/2025 21:06

So OP and there friend appear to have two choices by their reasoning.

  1. Charge car at home for £10 and park in a. Normal space for £2 whilst shopping
  1. Use public charger at £50 but be entitled to park for free. Saving them net minus £38.

But hey we got to park for free.

I know which I would choose. 😂

So before you drove an EV, driving down the motorway and were running out of fuel what did you do to prevent from being "stuck" if you ran out of petrol?

So why is it a redicukous expnsive charger, the faster the charger the more you pay. If you are not happy to pay for the convenience of a rapid 10-20 minute charge at 80p/kw then stop at a 43p/kw slow charger and wait 11 hours for it to charge. But I am guessing this might be inconvenient to you even tjough the cost is significantly less.

I think you have what is called "A first world problem"
