The hair salon lost my ring. Do I have any rights?

I lost my gold signet ring. The next day I retraced my steps throughout the day and emailed every place I had been to see if they had found it.
I got a haircut that day and the salon responded saying they had it! It was safe and I was welcome to come in anytime the next day.
I rock up the next day to retrieve it, with chocolates in tow. The guy crosses the room to get it but it's now not there apparently. He asks his colleagues if they have seen it and genuinely seems upset that he can't find it. He searches for about 20 mins. I gather that he is more likely to find it if I'm not staring him down so I leave the chocolates and ask him to get into contact if he finds it. He seems really worried and apologetic.

Three days later, I've heard no response. What do I do? Do I have any rights in this situation? The rings value is about £170 and I'm devastated to have lost it.
Thank you all.

Not sure in the legalities but it surely means the ring was too big?

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 15/12/2025 17:44

You have no rights. You did not leave it in the salons possession with their knowledge. They didn't have any legal obligation to make sure it was taken care of

TinselTitts · 15/12/2025 17:44

I'm not sure but if you haven't heard from them for 3 days, you need to contact them.

It's possible they've found it and thought someone else contacted you.

caringcarer · 15/12/2025 17:45

Claim on your household insurance.

CandyCaneKisses · 15/12/2025 17:46

It’s not their fault. You were lucky they’d even found it in the first place.

Claim on your household insurance.

The OP hasn't said she's insured but if she is, the excess could well be more than the price of the ring.

That’s the way it goes🤷‍♀️

Daisywhatsyouranswer · 15/12/2025 17:49

What rights would you think you had? Genuinely curious. You think it’s ok for uou to lose it, but not them and whay they need to give you 170 quid or something? Not really?

BadgernTheGarden · 15/12/2025 17:49

They found a ring, maybe someone else claimed it, or someone pinched it. Not much you can do I would think, you don't even know for sure it was your ring they found.

Hankunamatata · 15/12/2025 17:50

You lost it. They thought they had it but they dont. Get over yourself

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 15/12/2025 17:52

Mores the point, why haven’t you rung them back?

Cerialkiller · 15/12/2025 18:02

It's really interesting. There was a similar thread where op lost a ring in a pub, someone found it and handed it in and the finder informed the op that she had handed it in.

The pub then 'lost' it. Everyone on that thread were recommending police etc. what is so different about this case?

Did the salon put it in writing (via text or email) that they had it?

If you find money over a certain amount. You don't get to keep it. If you told the police you had found £170 in cash and then you then the next day you had lost it. I don't think they would be very impressed. No idea what they would do in these circumstances though..

Might be worth calling 101 to ask if it's worth them investigating, asking for CCTV for example.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 15/12/2025 18:06

Weird that you’ve not chased it for 3 days! But no, no rights, you lost your ring, that isn’t their fault.

TY78910 · 15/12/2025 18:09

My DP left his keys in a garage once. They rung him to say they had it. He went over, nobody could find it, they turned the place upside down. Turns out a manager that was off duty that day placed it in his locked office. Is there anyone off that day that they could ask?

NowThatsWhatICallRecent · 15/12/2025 18:11

Someone's nicked it.

upstairsdownstairscardboardbox · 15/12/2025 18:14

The manager found it and someone has nicked it and 1) left him with a world of issues personally - they will not ONLY be stealing that rind 2) made him look horrendous
I would call him and discuss and say that you should report to the police together.

🤣🤣🤣 hilarious

stichguru · 15/12/2025 18:15

If you can provide proof that they found it and then a member of staff nicked it, you might have a case, if not there's nothing you can do. It's YOUR fault it was left there, they weren't contracted to not lose your ring or to make sure other customers didn't nick it.

Cause the pub was lying, the salon doesn't appear to be. However someone in the salon may have nicked it so if OP doesn't mind ruining her relationship with them she could report it, bit pointless though

Riiiiight. But someone at the salon could be lying. The person op spoke to seems genuine but It was found and it's gone missing in their store.

OP hasn’t actually bothered checking if they’ve found it again though

spiderlight · 15/12/2025 18:37

Have you actually called them again to see if they've found it yet, though?

StripedVase · 15/12/2025 18:47

The hostility is so bizarre on here sometimes. She's upset by a loss and she asked a reasonable question, no need to slate her really is there?
