Group of boomer men

PuppyKeep · 15/12/2025 17:06

I am sitting in Wetherspoons with my husband on a large empty table. There are plenty of empty tables available.

A group of 4 boomer aged men have come and sat on our table and are chatting away. It started with 1 lone boomer man joining our table and sitting in silence with his pint, until his friends joined us and now they’re chatting away with their drinks

There are plenty of empty tables that could easily accommodate them.

Why did they join our table? We are complete strangers.

Use of the word boomer -

  • Dismissive: Used to shut down an older person's opinion, implying they don't understand current technology, culture, or social issues.
  • Pejorative: Can carry connotations of being old-fashioned, resistant to change, or holding outdated views.
Jackiepumpkinhead · 15/12/2025 20:07

I’m sure they’re not sitting with you for your scintillating conversation and dazzling wit.

5128gap · 15/12/2025 20:13

They bought it. Back in the days when you could get a large table in a good area for next to nothing. Even though they could now easily downsize to a smaller table, they're selfishly occupying it, leaving younger generations who can't afford nice tables because of...reasons to do with boomers..to put up with overcrowded ones. I'm surprised they didn't expect you to pay for their drinks, despite the fact that when you get old there won't be any free drinks left for you.

'Boomer' is a derogatory term. Did you not know that?

Of course she knows.

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 15/12/2025 20:19

But it's a table clearly for at least 6 and you are u a 2

That's unreasonable

sittingonabeach · 15/12/2025 20:19

boomer is very rarely used in a positive way

Spoons seems a strange place to go if you are introverts, and 3 times a week? Do you always sit at large table even if it is busy @PuppyKeep

It'll be so the community care worker knows where to find them when the minibus arrives.

Ageist and crass

RitaIncognita · 15/12/2025 20:27

The absolute worst part of all of this is that Boomer has become a derogatory term. It wasn't derogatory when we baby boomers were young and hip and cool. All of these generational terms will become derogatory when that particular generation gets old. This is the worst ageism of all.

Didimum · 15/12/2025 20:28

Oh, I thought we were doing collective nouns. Like a parliament of owls. Of a misery of crows. Shame.

VillaDiodati · 15/12/2025 20:37

Ablondiebutagoody · 15/12/2025 17:17

Dammit. I thought you wanted a collective noun for a group of boomer men.

An aboomeration?

PuppyKeep · 15/12/2025 19:59

boomer is pejorative

How??

Also, spirit of Christmas?

Husband and myself are introverts; we don’t want to share a table when there are plenty empty ones available. I still don’t understand why a complete stranger would join an occupied table over one of the many empty vacant tables? Beggars belief.

'Myself' cannot be an introvert.

'Myself' also cannot be a millennial. Or anything else.

Just out of interest - are all millennials stupid or just some of them?

Plmnki · 15/12/2025 20:47

Try avoiding westherspoons in future. It’s going to be full of Brexit oiks. As you’ve discovered. Go elsewhere.

I did report it but MN let it stand. Not surprising given the shit I read on here.

I expect they thought it should be challenged on the thread. 🙄 I don't believe the OP wasn't fully aware of what she was posting.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 17/12/2025 23:22

Actually, I've been the men in this scenario. Five of us for dinner, mostly tables of 4 or 2. Saw a table for 8 with two people sitting at it. So we sat down. Plenty of other tables they could have sat at as a two. They eventually moved although were not happy about it.

1offnamechange · 17/12/2025 23:27

Why didn't you just say something when the first man sat down? Like "excuse me, we're sitting here?" Or "why are you sitting here when there are so many empty tables? Please can you move to one of them?" Or just "go away!"

Obviously you can't make them move but you'd have more luck addressing them directly than silently seething and posting online.

Nobody on mn is going to know why they chose to sat at an already occupied table, only they can tell you!

bombastix · 17/12/2025 23:40

Probably because they are entitled and tedious. Find another table

LynseyDenton · 17/12/2025 23:42

Oh this happened to me and my pal in an empty cafe. We had the best seat (sofa) and a man and his wife/girlfriend/whatever came and sat down beside us. Basically to bully us off the table. I was young and naive and slunk away but do you know, I am still raging at the audacity of it.

Some people think it's polite to fill up a table, leaving the rest free when there's likely to be large numbers of people coming in. I always choose a table for the right number if I can.
