Group of boomer men

I am sitting in Wetherspoons with my husband on a large empty table. There are plenty of empty tables available.

A group of 4 boomer aged men have come and sat on our table and are chatting away. It started with 1 lone boomer man joining our table and sitting in silence with his pint, until his friends joined us and now they’re chatting away with their drinks

There are plenty of empty tables that could easily accommodate them.

Why did they join our table? We are complete strangers.

Are you of the same age group. Maybe they feel comfortable with you.

Are there other big tables, maybe they want your table?

Dammit. I thought you wanted a collective noun for a group of boomer men.

A pride (but not the gay thing).

Gall10 · 15/12/2025 17:21

What is a boomer?
Going by your username are you a smelly dog lady?
Not nice to be insulted is it?

I’m wondering if they have diff expectations?

It was a statement of fact.

If they were four black men would the title of your thread be "Group of black men" - because that would be a statement of fact too - and would you also wonder if black men have different expectations?

Or would you think that was a little bit racist, in the same way that your post is a little bit ageist?

HoneyParsnipSoup · 15/12/2025 17:21

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned dementia yet

Because the pub is empty and this table is out of the way and it suits us.

Well it didn't suit you after those people joined you. You're free to ask them why they joined you, or free to move.

I'll say nothing about your use of the word boomer. It's been said already.

A guffaw
A boast

What age are these Boomer Men?

Beentheredonethat98 · 15/12/2025 17:24

They probably remember an era when pubs were for socialising and people talked to each other rather than staring at their phones. Deal then was sit at a small table with no spare chairs if you do not want company. Sit at a large table with six spare chairs if you want others to join you.
I wonder if there is a parallel thread on Dadsnet: Went to the pub today and a couple were sitting at a table for eight - my usual table as a matter of fact. When me and my mates sat in the spare seats they directed dagger like vibes at us. Is this a generational thing?

Sidebeforeself · 15/12/2025 17:26

A Boomer gang? If Spoons chucked them out they’d only come back! …

Boomeners?

A Reform?

Fgfgfg · 15/12/2025 17:29

How do you know they're boomers (1946 - 1964)?
Have you asked them how old they are?
Maybe they've just had hard lives and look older than they actually are.
Maybe they thought they'd come and sit with you because they feel comfortable around people their own age.
Maybe you look like the kind of people they identify with.
You could have just said that a group of men came and sat at your table.
Was it necessary to mention their age?

Artificialhens · 15/12/2025 17:32

A portfolio?

Wingedharpy · 15/12/2025 17:32

It'll be so the community care worker knows where to find them when the minibus arrives.

CandyCaneKisses · 15/12/2025 17:33

You sound antisocial. Sitting in a pub, on your phone, fretting over why people have sat next to you is weird.

It’s like people are allergic to human interactions nowadays.

AwfullyGood · 15/12/2025 17:34

If you ask them the exact same question, wording and all, they won't be long moving.

You also can't expecting luxury and comfy dining in Wetherspoons.

RitaIncognita · 15/12/2025 17:36

I know. You can't fill up your MN Ageism Bingo card without it.

Bikergran · 15/12/2025 17:38

Probably their regular table. If it bothers you so much, move, there's plenty of empty tables....🤣

It's fucking rude and ageist to boot.

Call the police op their boomers oldish men, are you shaking with fear stuned,
Livid.

KimberleyClark · 15/12/2025 17:39

why are you and your DH sitting on a large empty table if there are lots of other tables available?

PuppyKeep · 15/12/2025 17:42

I mentioned age because I thought there might be a cultural element (working mens clubs?) And they all belonged to same generation.

myself and husband are millennials if that makes a difference?

Not sure a spoons is the place for a quiet intimate drink

Yep! That is just as rude as the pub might fill up and 2 people are taking a big table

Yes,at this time of year there are bound to be large groups coming in!

Stephy1886 · 15/12/2025 17:44

I couldn't sit at a big table if there was only 2 of us
I take it smaller tables were available?
