My friend gets a cleaner in twice a week - 4 hours each time - and ends up spending £600 a month on the cleaner (in London)

What, your cleaner works for free? That sounds exploitative!

I wish someone would pay me Grin

nannyl · 14/12/2025 19:32

£60 / week

(4 hours)

Occasionally (after I've had a load of guests to stay it might be £75 for 5 hours)

1apenny2apenny · 14/12/2025 19:33

Zero, I don’t work and treat it as part of my contribution to the household. If I worked, even
part time, I would have a cleaner and would need at least 4 hours a week (large house).

Only 17% of UK households use a cleaner, so most people obviously think it is not beneath them to keep their own habitat hygienic.

ETA obviously some of this 17% will be people who aren't physically capable of cleaning, who are clearly not unreasonable!

Realistically unless you have a cleaner every few days then you have to do at least some cleaning. Obviously we clean the kitchen surfaces daily and because we have small children who drop crumbs we vacuum daily. I change bedlinen when it’s warm. I also wipe down the sinks/ loos every other day.

We have a cleaner every 2 weeks. It’s £90 for 5 hours. She does a bit of ironing too. I’d love her to come weekly but my husband thinks it’s too expensive. I also have a day off without the children so I do manage to get stuff done.

Fucking hell thats a lot of money to give away, out of your pocket, to someone else.

LadyLolaRuben · 14/12/2025 19:42

Two hours per week £22ph

Lemonlimonade · 14/12/2025 19:43

Zero! Cleaning my own home is satisfying and a good workout. And it saves money.

Christ. Go take a nap. Must be tiring being so sanctimonious.

RosesAndHellebores · 14/12/2025 19:55

About £450pcm. 3 hours, twice a week.

mrssunshinexxx · 14/12/2025 20:11

cupfinalchaos · 14/12/2025 20:13

Everything you pay for is out of pocket to someone else. That’s how paying for stuff works.

Ballondor · 14/12/2025 20:24

£120 a month, in the North-West.

CraftyNavySeal · 14/12/2025 20:33

I live alone in a flat. An hour on Saturdays and I can clean the whole thing.

I would love to have a deep clean a couple of times a year though.

Shouldbeworkingnotreadingtalk · 14/12/2025 20:43

£140 a week. . So £606 for a month. That’s x2 times a week at x4 hours each time. I’m bloody untidy and quite slovenly though and she helps with cleaning putty animals too. Writing it down seems insane.

Harold99 · 14/12/2025 20:44

Here I thought my£160 a month was too much!

Not a single person who has a cleaner is unreasonable.

Doesn't matter if you work, don't work, live with kids and a partner, live alone. No one is unreasonable for having a cleaner.

BrunchBarBandit · 14/12/2025 20:49

£60 per week for 4 hours. North West

My household wouldn’t be as happy if we didn’t outsource this work.

Cel77 · 14/12/2025 20:49

Nothing. I'm the cleaner.

Ineffable23 · 14/12/2025 20:57

I spend about £140 per month on the basis of a 12 month year (rather than 13 4 week "months".

My cleaner means I am compelled to tidy up sufficiently to facilitate cleaning once a week and for that I'm very grateful.

TheMadGardener · 14/12/2025 20:58

£73 a month which is two hours once a fortnight. West Country.

museumum · 14/12/2025 20:59

£108 per month for a 2-3 hour clean every fortnight. Really keeps us right though over clean between too.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 14/12/2025 21:06

30pw, so either 120 or 150. 1.5 hours a time.

Planning to switch to 2 hours EOW in the new year to cut it down a bit.

It sounds like a lot but it definitely helps us keep on top of things.

And yet you pay her just over £10 an hour.

That was the rate the agency said when we contacted them.

if it helps I’m severely physically disabled and on benefits….

but yes, maybe I should pay more.
