M & S Fishermans Pie issue

GeorgeA12 · 12/12/2025 19:56

Bought a M & S Fishermans Pie tonight and was really looking forward to it. Got myself all set up, TV, drink and on the couch after a long week. To my utter astonishment there were only pieces of white fish in there. Checked the box and its true, they have only put cod in. So its basically cod, sauce and mash.

To my mind, Fisherman's Pie must contain at least smoked haddock, succulent prawns and chunks of cod all in a nice sauce. So, am i being unreasonable? Must a Fishermans Pie contain more than one type of fish or is this another case of food outlets trying to completely reduce the cost of ingredients and hope we dont notice? I feel conned!

You wanted Fish pie.

Fisherman's pie is mash and one type of fish in a creamy boring sauce.

Laurmolonlabe · 13/12/2025 22:38

I get around this by making my own- having smoked haddock and prawns in it exponentially increases the cost of the recipe.

Write to custmer services expressing your disappointment at the lack of fish ih general and I'm sure they'll recompense you with a voucher and a bottle of wine!

Have to ay that most M&S food these days in my opinion is hugely overpriced and overrated!

Seriously? Not when the ingredients are listed on the label and also the percentage of fish.

Not a leg to stand on.

Bjorkdidit · 14/12/2025 08:06

I'd not expect any ready meal to contain a decent percentage of fish or meat, almost all of them are a bit shit and overpriced for the amount and quality of food.

I'd also not expect something that clearly says cod in mornay sauce covered in fluffy mash potato on the front of the packet to contain other types of fish, whatever it calls itself.

BillieWiper · 14/12/2025 12:00

That's disappointing. But I'd still be happy as long as the cod was plentiful and the sauce not too runny or too floury.

I like cod/haddock, maybe a bit of salmon. The one from Waitrose has prawns also but it's tasteless and crap and prawns were rubbery.

On the subject of prawns, the M&S posh prawn sandwich is amazing. The one with pink sauce and lettuce. Reminds me of my childhood for some reason. I think lots of supermarkets did a prawn cocktail sandwich back in the late 80s but not so much now.

ThisBrickOtter · 14/12/2025 12:07

I've had a significant number of issues with MnS food being overpriced and disappointing. Its nothing special.

Labelledelune · 15/12/2025 13:40

Was that the cheaper one? The expensive one has prawns etc in it.

JoeyJava · 16/12/2025 10:24

See ingredients. And remember, there are going to be variations between each product.

Better check next time then. Or make it yourself. For a ready made one, the Cook or Charlie Bighams ones are nice.

Sainsbury's fish pie is lovely with white fish, smoked fish and prawns, in a white sauce with mash and a crispy topping.

Did it at least have boiled eggs?

Boiled eggs are disgustingly and have no place in a fish pie.

I don’t shop in M&S but other supermarkets - Sainsbury’s/Tesco/Asda all have more than one range and in general their cheaper fish pie is just white fish, sauce and mash and the more expensive version has a mix of white fish, salmon, smoked fish and prawns. I tend to prefer the blander, cheaper ones .

Prawns in a pie??? I have youngs pies quite a lot. I’m sure one of them is a fisherman’s pie and I would die if there was a prawn in there! Off to google but I’m not sure I want to know.

All of the Youngs fish pies are what I would call ‘basic’ and are just white fish, sauce and mash.

Negroany · 16/12/2025 23:26

To me - fish pie has cod, smoked haddock, salmon. White sauce.
I add capers, peas and lemon, and make the mash with a mix of potatoes and yams.

Fisherman's pie, however, seems to have any old rubbish in it. Prawns. Mussels. Eggs. Cheese FFS!!

So, I don't think fisherman's pie has any sort of standard. Fish pie does.

M&S can do what they like with the abomination that seems to be fisherman's pie.

ColdSpringHarbor · 16/12/2025 23:48

Is Fisherman's Pie actually a defined thing? Like a standard thing? I thought it was just one way of naming a fish pie. Fish pie can have anything fishy in it, from just one type of white fish to several types of fish, smoked fish, prawns, hardboiled eggs and peas etc. But I don't think Fisherman's Pie per se has a clear definition.

Thanks....this was my original question 😂

Someone upthread said that fisherman's pie was the pie that fishermen, or probably their wives, traditionally made from scraps of fish trimmed off fillets, which makes sense. What's in it depends on what needs using up, so it's bit mad that you can actually buy it in the first place as it shouldn't exist as a 'new' dish.

OhNoMyLovely · 17/12/2025 15:57

It's just a name!

Most people call it Fish Pie.

Fisherman's Pie is just a tarted up marketing name. It doesn't mean it's any different.

I can't believe there is so much here on a fish pie!

There are lots of versions.

Some have a spinach base, others contain 3 kinds of fish and prawns, and hard boiled eggs.

It's personal preference what you put in. The name makes no difference.
