Do you put garlic in cauliflower cheese (when served with a roast)

Just that. Caved in and doing a brocolli and cauliflower cheese for my new BIL. We normally do not do anything creamy. Just seen a few people on TikTok say things like “you ruined it with the garlic”. Guessing it’s too overpowering for a roast?

Do you add garlic when you do it?

(boring question I know!). I would add it if I was doing it as a stand alone dish with salad.

Noooooo

Namechange234567 · 12/12/2025 11:10

I don't! But we do add whole garlic bulbs to the potatoes so it's not because we're scared of a little garlic

Faceonthewrongfoot · 12/12/2025 11:11

Its not something I generally make, but tbh, I don't think there's anything that isn't improved with garlic. Or cheese. Or both.

HeadyLamarr · 12/12/2025 11:11

I've never had it with garlic in.

Which is odd, on reflection, as pretty much everything else I make is heavy on the garlic.

Completely agree

CuriousKangaroo · 12/12/2025 11:14

I love garlic but would never put it in cauliflower cheese. It’s the wrong flavour profile. What I add to cheese sauce is things that enhance the cheese favour. I don’t know why it works, but adding English mustard powder AND some whole grain mustard is ideal.

NebulousSadTimes · 12/12/2025 11:14

I stir a spoonful or two of onion & garlic dip into the sauce just before I add it to the cauliflower.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 12/12/2025 11:16

This isn't helpful but I am firmly of the opinion that Cauli cheese (which I love) is all kinds of wrong with a roast.

So I'd buy the one from M and S as it comes and decant, but if you really want to make it, no garlic, but yes to mustard

Posithor · 12/12/2025 11:17

Never heard of garlic in it to be bonest.

I made cauliflower cheese in an effort to get my kids to eat a vegetable (albeit covered in cheesy deliciousness) on Tuesday. It's been about ten years since I made it and I remember why...I stood and stirred the roux, while trying to make the rest of the tea, melted the cheese, made the breadcrumbs, ovened it lovingly. It's an absolute pain in the arse to make and get out on time, my kids hated it - my husband and I did love it 🤣 - but if you're thinking of making it from scratch for one person please just go buy a pre done one lol

Calgarycat · 12/12/2025 11:22

I have no problem making it. I make cheese sauce a lot - lasagna, fish pie, macaroni cheese etc. I even bought one of those rotary graters cause I grate SO much cheese in winter. Highly recommend.

Im sure most people will eat the cauliflower cheese at some point. Probably as leftovers for most.

I agree with this. I’m heartbroken that people have that with a roast haha

Idontjetwashthefucker · 12/12/2025 11:25

I don't like cauliflower cheese on a roast, what if it mixes with the gravy? The horror!

Certainly wouldn't have garlic anywhere near a roast either and I love garlic

Posithor · 12/12/2025 11:25

It was more getting everything out on time on Christmas day if you're doing a lot of other things - but perhaps you're more versed in the art of cheese sauce making for me itd just be an unnecessary chore - but then I'm sure you're BIL is more likely to appreciate the effort than my 4yo 🤣

TruffleShuffles · 12/12/2025 11:26

I think cauliflower cheese is probably the only thing I don’t add garlic to. I add mustard and nutmeg to my cheese sauce for cauliflower cheese and save the garlic for my creamed spinach.

NewGuide · 12/12/2025 11:28

Absolutely no need for garlic. It would absolutely ruin it for me.

Can't beat medium roast lamb with a few slivers of garlic pushed into it.😋

But IMO cauliflower cheese and garlic aren't happy bedfellows.

Bimblebombles · 12/12/2025 11:31

No thank you.
Loads of cheese, dijon mustard and paprika please.

I love roast lamb with garlic but I wouldn't have it as a roast with gravy...with mash potato and buttered greens though, now you're talking

RinklyRomaine · 12/12/2025 11:48

No, it doesn’t go. Garlic up the turkey, ofc, but Dijon and nutmeg in the cauli cheese only. I also chuck half a tub of crème fraiche in the sauce which I think was a Delia tip originally. Never any leftovers.

A few slivers, what are you on about, lamb needs loads of garlic.Any body else remember "poulet aux quarante gousses d'ail", the great Provencal classic with 40 cloves of garlic, begone with your slivers. And yes cauliflower cheese with a roast is the work of the devil, cheese sauce and gravy should never be on the same plate.

TruffleShuffles · 12/12/2025 12:03

Genuinely curious, do the people who have an issue with the gravy touching the cheese sauce also not have bread sauce with their Christmas dinner or is it that ok?

None of that bothers me, but I can't cope with tomatoes next to fried eggs.

Natsku · 12/12/2025 12:07

I add garlic to everything so yes, I would add it to cauliflower cheese.
