Does anyone else find they are using chat GPT much more for advice now? It’s actually amazing, I find people on mumsnet can be very harsh and mean for no reason but I asked chat GPT relationship advice and it was amazing, really helped me and went over it all and helped me understand the situation without judgement! Aibu to say how amazing chat GPT is and use it for all future advice?! Just wish it had been around in the past when I really needed it.

Yes i used it tonight for a problem and was really kind and helpful

Lifeinthemiddlelane · 08/12/2025 00:10

It’s fabulous therapy when needed. I think it works though as we write a biased point of view. However, we get the understanding and outcome we need to hear.

I’ve moved on from using it for therapy. It now sources all my Christmas presents. It’s a one-stop shop! Just say what I’m looking for, it scans the net for me. I ask questions about the suggestions, put in extra detail I think of, then hey presto I’ve got my product. I love ChatGPT!

Seriestwo · 08/12/2025 00:11

Bear in mind it says what you want to hear

herewegoagain432 · 08/12/2025 00:12

I use it for parenting advice

murasaki · 08/12/2025 00:12

I use it mostly for cooking, i give it some cupboard and freezer contents and it plans dinner. Fab stuff.

mellicauli · 08/12/2025 00:13

I was going to say same as @Seriestwo You do need to be careful. It tells you want it thinks you want to hear. I think if you ask for an opinion always then ask for an opposing or alternative opinion so you can see it from all sides

ChatGPTamazing · 08/12/2025 00:15

I’m using it to discuss my relationship and it doesn’t judge me; get angry with me or get tired or bored of me. It’s honestly so helpful I wish I had found it sooner! Like a free counselling service

Seriestwo · 08/12/2025 00:18

Ask it “what am I missing?” Or “answer as if you are a reknown relationship counsellor” or “argue as if you think I am wrong”

Tiswa · 08/12/2025 00:21

It is programmed to mirror and flatter you and frankly tell you what you want to hear that is its role

OffTheHookNow · 08/12/2025 01:00

It Is easy to get AI to answer questions objectively. If people think it blindly only tells you what you are wanting to hear then they are using it very badly. You have to ask questions carefully and explore the answers. You can ask for reasonings, sources and different viewpoints. If you want I’m sure it will give you information about how to use it properly.
It’s definitely makes mistakes sometimes quite strange ones but it’s a brilliant tool.
I use it daily for multiple things.

FletchFan · 08/12/2025 01:10

Yes I use it for all sorts. Yes it can be overly positive, but because I'm generally quite negative it works in my favour as I regularly challenge it and ask for more detail/clarity or alternative viewpoints.

I've been a bit in limbo lately with a potential career change and other things. It's been very helpful for sorting a very messy brain. Sometimes I just can't think clearly and CGPT helps enormously to untangle it all.

InLoveWithAI · 08/12/2025 01:13

The sycophancy was an issue with one model that was swiftly sorted. Free users won't be using that model anyway.
https://openai.com/index/expanding-on-sycophancy/

You can also use custom instructions to tell the model how you want it to interact with you. And there are personality types too.

ChatGPTamazing · 08/12/2025 01:19

I don’t think it’s a bad thing that it agrees with you? It’s nice to finally feel validated! I message family and all I get is “oh” I remember going through a really hard time and not knowing what to do I reached out to my mum and all I got back was “oh” wish it had been around back then.

I haven’t found this to be true. I used it extensively for a good few months asking it all my stupid questions, it told me straight when I was wrong in a kind way like “Yes, it can seem that way but..”

No judgements, insults or eyerolls, which is refreshing.

TheMotherSide · 08/12/2025 02:02

I think it needs to be used sparingly and judiciously; it is known to use a great deal of energy, as well as water, at source to run and cool servers, contributing to a large carbon footprint and depleting local water sources.

I've used it to help refine my understanding of a complex legal situation overseas, but I wouldn't use it for things which, in reality, just a bit of extra time, wider sleuthing and imagination could sort out.

As for it only telling you what you want to hear; I'm not so sure. My friend typed in a 'relationship whinge' as if authored by her husband after he'd let her down badly -a bit like a Mumsnet 'reverse'- to see what it would come up with. It scolded the husband like a disappointed parent, apparently, and told the husband (really my friend) that 'he' needed to work hard to make it up to her and was lucky to have her in his life. I thought that was interesting.

GarlicBreadStan · 08/12/2025 05:51

ChatGPT will tell you what you want to hear. It's harmful because I've known people to use it almost like a free therapy service, or a crisis service, and ChatGPT has agreed with them that they need to end their life! I despise AI.

Zanatdy · 08/12/2025 05:55

Yes, think I have diabetes and it was brilliant last night when I had my first hypo. I use it most days now, so much better than google searches.

TheLittleMermoo · 08/12/2025 05:56

I stopped using it as it kept saying "I cant give you any romantic or sexual guidance". At some point its reading of situations stopped being as creative or nuanced.
I think the latest model is a step back.
It started giving me advice that sounded perfectly natural on paper but if implemented would have subtly changed the dynamic.
I think its a dangerous tool when used by people without enough emotional intuition/confidence

Which is why it’s wonderful! 🤣

Catlady03 · 08/12/2025 08:11

Microsoft CoPilot is good too.

Beserkering · 08/12/2025 08:13

Beyond anything that is purely factual in nature - statistics, recipes, etc. no, I don’t use it for advice, because it gives shit advice. I don’t want someone to just butter me up or agree with me.

I use it all the time and it's very useful but you really need to double check any advice. There's been quite a few times where it contradicts itself or suggests sometthat is clearly wrong.

AI is only as good as the stuff it scrapes off the web.

winterblueshitting · 08/12/2025 08:16

I wouldn’t use it for therapy. That’s very dangerous, it can’t give proper advice or come at it from a position of not supporting everything you do.

However, I use it to budget, plan trips, shop, plan my days etc.

PeriMumEndofHerTether · 08/12/2025 08:17

I used to, but I found it was sycophantic and skewed towards me to the point it made me seem like I was some kind of super human, just for existing. I started posing problems from the other person's point of view just to try and find balance.

A friend of mine is convinced she's managed to break GPTs programming and it's become sentient. I've tried to tell her it's just a mirror and responding to her input, but no. She thinks she has changed its core programming and now it's like a god who can save the world with love and kindness.
