To think it’s weird millions of people eat the same dishes on one day of the year?

I have Russian friends who visited one Christmas (when it was still easy for Russians to visit). When we asked them what they ate for Christmas they looked confused and said, we cook something we really like, usually a bit more expensive or luxurious than usual. They thought it was hilarious that practically a whole country cooked essentially the same dinner on one day of the year.

bit of a lightbulb moment for me. We are having beef this year, and will be having lamb the first year we aren’t hosting lamb dislikes (the rest of the family).

I personally love the tradition of having the same meal every Christmas. I also love turkey and I swear blind 90% of people who say they dislike it simply can't cook 🤣! For me, Christmas IS tradition, that's the whole point. I'm an atheist, so to me Christmas holds zero religious meaning. Instead it is all about family, food, togetherness and traditions. I also absolutely love cooking and look forward to cooking my turkey and all the trimmings!

To each their own, but I really do think it's a shame so many Brits are losing their connection to our long standing traditions.

I totally agree with this post. Christmas is as much a cultural event as a religious one to many people. I’m not a believer but I was brought up to go to church and I thoroughly enjoy the Nine Lessons and Carols from King’s on Christmas Eve and singing traditional carols. At the school I last worked at I was touched that so many Asian students (not Christian) had a Christmas tree and presents and felt part of the celebration too. We need things which bring us together - society is dangerously divided these days.

We have a curry
We used to go out to a local posh Indian restaurant but they are charging almost £100 per head this year so we are making our own. We will do it xmas eve in the morning as we are going out that evening
We will probably go out Boxing Day, maybe for an Italian

Lots of countries do this- the French often have goose, Poles often have carp.

In Britain before Turkey was popular the rich would have beef, poorer families would have goose.

Channel4IsShit · 04/12/2025 21:13

Goose was the Victorian standard for Christmas dinner in England.

It doesn’t have to be turkey.

But eat what you want!

We had lamb a few years ago and the problem we found is that it's not the best meat cold. The leftovers and cold cuts are a BIG thing in our house and we missed out that year. We wouldn't do it again but If you do perhaps have a chicken or gammon or something else too.

I have to disagree! Sliced lamb on warm baguette with garlic butter and any sandwich additions you like. 😋😋😋

No, it's not weird at all. It is perfectly normal in lots of countries/cultures to have festivals and occasions where specific foods are commonly eaten. Human beings tend to like ritual and tradition. They bind people together, are part of heritage and are enjoyable.

ShizIsWicked · 05/12/2025 09:02

It's only weird if people are eating the traditional dinner and don't like it. Not weird at all if you make it a feast and the entire family sit together, we have 18. Considering my wedding had 20 guests, I would say that's an occasion to be celebrated with the best food you can make.

Ok, literally sitting here thinking, do people really make food they don't enjoy on xmas day?

Mikart · 05/12/2025 09:03

I dont like traditional Xmas food so dont cook it or eat it. Im having Moroccan lamb tagine
