Slug-gate! How much reimbursement should I request?

NC for this, and posted shamelessly in AIBU for traffic.

The story, in a nutshell; I had to go away at v short notice last month and booked 4 nights in a self-catering place. On arrival (day1) I noticed slug trails on the bedroom carpets. But it was late, I was tired, I didn't have the owner's number so I left it until the following morning, when I contacted the owner.
Nothing was done about this by the owner on days 2 (which I queried that evening) or day 3 (when I kind of gave up).
But early hours of day 4 I got out of bed to go to the loo and almost stood on a slug on a carpet next to the bed. (There was no bedside light so I had to cross the room in the dark, and no furniture other than a tiny bedside table so my case had had to stay on the ground; thankfully I couldn't see any slug trails on it). Decided I couldn't stay there any longer so moved out with daybreak and had to find alternative accom at even shorter notice for that evening.
I've contacted the owner and by text and phone but am getting nowhere with a refund so have now opened a case through the CC company (luckily I'd paid with my card).
My question - how much refund would you go for? I'm asking for a refund of the unused night plus some more to reflect distress and inconvenience. I think a total refund for 2 out of the 4 nights is reasonable, and I'm sure that some people would ask for more. But a couple of people have told me not to make such a fuss about a slug!
Well, who wants mashed slug between their toes when they get out of bed?
So what does the MN jury think?
Poll - YANBU = refund well deserved (but how much? Freetext please!)
YABU = suck it up (but I'll still write an honest review!)

How can you be certain you didn't bring the slug in with you?
In any case one slug isn't an infestation, slugs do get into houses sometimes especially in damp weather. If the accommodation was good on every other respect then you are being very unreasonable

MrsMitford3 · 02/12/2025 13:51

Well I have come down in the morning and found a slug on my kitchen floor. And slug trails.
I live a drafty Victorian house that probably has a million places where slugs can slither in. I loather them but I think you are being very OTT.
I live in Berks and it has apparently been a very sluggy year!

Kreepture · 02/12/2025 13:53

we get them coming in on the bag/boxes the recycling goes out in.. the trails in my dining room are almost artistic..

The one that ventured all the way up my dining chair across the top and meandered back down and over the seat did make me raise an eyebrow though... (we have seat covers, yes i washed it)

YABU. slugs happen.

PotatoesAreLife · 02/12/2025 13:54

I’d want the unused night and the cost I paid out for the other accommodation.

YANBU! I had a slug issue in my old house, it’s a pain! But I’m not putting up with it when I’m paying. If owner had engaged with you and tried to help, I’d be more sympathetic.

@soupforbrains So you saw a thread entitled 'slug-gate' and thought 'yes, that's definitely something I want to read'#

@youdontwantasluginthebedroom Occasional slugs are fairly normal and no reason to evacuate the building.

youdontwantasluginthebedroom · 02/12/2025 12:54

I think that if you're paying to stay somewhere and there's a slug infestation, the property owner should sort it out!

Would you want to stand on a slug in your bare feet in the dark?

Totally agree, slugs are disgusting and yes they have somehow managed to squeeze in somewhere in my home the odd time but I do try to deal with it

LardyCakeLover · 02/12/2025 13:58

In the morning when you wake up, and you have those crusty bits in the corner of your eyes? That's slug poo that is! Honest, my mates mums next door neighbour told me......

SweetcornFritter · 02/12/2025 14:01

I’d have to amputate my foot if I stood on a slug so I think a full refund is the very least you should expect OP.

BitOfAWeirdo · 02/12/2025 13:27

My chickens love eating slugs.

Next time you go away, take a chicken.

This wins the internet today!

Packing list:
-toothbrush
-spare pants
-chicken
-passport
-phone charger

I have real many hotel reviews where people freak out about an insect in the room, and almost always they jump right to exclaiming that the hotel is infested with bed bugs even if they include a photograph and it turns out to be nothing more than an ant or a ladybird... To me, they're hysteria invalidates any other review they may be giving cuz obviously they are so unreasonable. It's extremely common.

Yeah I get it, you rented a place, you saw evidence of slug trails, you were tired, you went to bed, you got up in The night, and there was a slug on the floor that you almost stepped on. Yuck. Bare feed. Didn't like that. So now you think you should get a refund. I don't know. I mean if the entire floor was covered in them like if you could literally count a dozen or more slugs, then that would obviously be a slipping problem, you step on a slug or two, you follow you bust your head open, that's a problem...

I wouldn't be fussed at all personally. I would have taken photos, mind you, and I would have included it in the review, considering everything else was good, the price the location the amenities were all what I expected, I would state all of that honestly, and then just say that the only unexpected surprise was overnight there was a slug or two on the floor. Photo included.

AhBiscuits · 02/12/2025 14:06

It's only a slug. Leaving was dramatic.

Oftenaddled · 02/12/2025 14:09

We can't really adjust compensation to cope with people's phobias. If you had a real phobia about e.g. spiders and emailed ahead and received assurances there would be none, I suppose that would be grounds for compensation. But the fact that you are scared of something doesn't make it someone else's problem to deal with, unfortunately.

There are people who become strangely helpless in other people's properties. But if a slug or whatever turned up in your own house presumably you'd deal with it.

Still, it is horrible to be anxious and feel threatened in a place that is strange to you, and moving out may have been your best plan since you were also dealing with other stresses. I am much jumpier when under pressure and obstacles can feel insurmountable. That decision to leave the accommodation without paying is on you though, not your landlord, and he doesn't owe you anything.

TheWytch · 02/12/2025 14:11

Maybe just book a Travelodge next time. It would suit you much better

housethatbuiltme · 02/12/2025 14:11

Legally you do not have a leg to stand on.

You booked a room for 4 nights, you received a room for 4 nights and the key legal point is you STAYED in the room for those 4 nights.

You cannot use the product/service to its full as intended then claim after you have benefited from its use that it was not fit for purpose. It was proven to be fit for purpose when you actively used it for its purpose.

The only way you would have had a claim is if you refused to use it an left. Not left mildly early on the last day but actually left at the beginning thus not using the service you booked because it was deemed 'unusable'.

As for your appall at slugs, I live in a damp rural mountain area in the north and lived in houses with slugs my whole life. Half of all houses I have lived in had them, especially in later extensions of Victorian houses used to add plumbing and bathrooms, its really not rare. Its also really not a big deal, they aren't harbingers of disease to humans unless you eat them.

user927464 · 02/12/2025 14:14

OP are you sure you're not mixing up slugs and rabies infested rats?

RedTagAlan · 02/12/2025 14:14

hyggetyggedotorg · 02/12/2025 13:09

How many slugs are we talking? One slug can make multiple trails.

One or two slugs - YABU.

A bucketful of slugs - YANBU.

Also, what sort of accommodation was this? If it’s a rural log cabin or glamping hut etc, it would be very unreasonable to expect no wildlife at all.

I am amazed I had to read so far down to see your comment with the obvious question.

What sort of property.

I enjoy reading tripadvisor reviews. I remember one, a 300 year old Scottish castle , in the country, surrounded by woodland. A Reviewer complained about a spider on the window. Owner replied back... wtf do you expect :-)

Remindeds me of the Fawlty towers scene.

"Well may I ask what you expected to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically across the plain..."

MyCrushWithEyeliner · 02/12/2025 14:17

Distress? 😂Really?

I do think you should have a partial refund though, maybe 10%, and an apology.

Mary28 · 02/12/2025 14:22

Yes slugs are gross but I think it's more like leave a bad review rather than be looking for a refund for it to be honest.

OrigamiOwls · 02/12/2025 14:25

One slug is not an infestation.

KarriTreeSullivan · 02/12/2025 14:32

Perhaps OP read the horror book Slugs by Shaun Hutson as a teenager. I did, one feels very differently towards stepping on a slug in the night after reading that!

Ilovemyshed · 02/12/2025 14:33

God, we had a house once where there was always a resident slug in the hall. YABU.

Megifer · 02/12/2025 14:37

Awww I used to love my little slug friend that came out at night. It had the most beautiful markings, like a little tiger, I was well chuffed when I finally caught a glimpse of it!!

Yabu anyway, distress......😂😂😂😂

HoskinsChoice · 02/12/2025 14:41

Can you be sure you didn't bring the slug in? It could well have been stuck to your shoes or bag. A 50% refund for 1 slug is ridiculous. If they'd come out, what did you expect them to do?

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 02/12/2025 14:42

Slug infestation 🤣, thats a first

InlandTaipan · 02/12/2025 14:43

I had a slug infesting my front room last year. 1 slug - took me 3 months to catch the fucker.
YANBU to be grossed out but you are being somewhat U about the rest.
