Slug-gate! How much reimbursement should I request?

youdontwantasluginthebedroom · 02/12/2025 12:49

NC for this, and posted shamelessly in AIBU for traffic.

The story, in a nutshell; I had to go away at v short notice last month and booked 4 nights in a self-catering place. On arrival (day1) I noticed slug trails on the bedroom carpets. But it was late, I was tired, I didn't have the owner's number so I left it until the following morning, when I contacted the owner.
Nothing was done about this by the owner on days 2 (which I queried that evening) or day 3 (when I kind of gave up).
But early hours of day 4 I got out of bed to go to the loo and almost stood on a slug on a carpet next to the bed. (There was no bedside light so I had to cross the room in the dark, and no furniture other than a tiny bedside table so my case had had to stay on the ground; thankfully I couldn't see any slug trails on it). Decided I couldn't stay there any longer so moved out with daybreak and had to find alternative accom at even shorter notice for that evening.
I've contacted the owner and by text and phone but am getting nowhere with a refund so have now opened a case through the CC company (luckily I'd paid with my card).
My question - how much refund would you go for? I'm asking for a refund of the unused night plus some more to reflect distress and inconvenience. I think a total refund for 2 out of the 4 nights is reasonable, and I'm sure that some people would ask for more. But a couple of people have told me not to make such a fuss about a slug!
Well, who wants mashed slug between their toes when they get out of bed?
So what does the MN jury think?
Poll - YANBU = refund well deserved (but how much? Freetext please!)
YABU = suck it up (but I'll still write an honest review!)

One slug c’mon ! Hardly an infestation! Was the accommodation in a rural area ?

Northumberlandisbest · 02/12/2025 13:22

I rent out my annex on Airbnb. We live in the country. Despite my best efforts the local wildlife is determined to move in. In the summer with the windows open it’s a particular challenge. Spiders in particular can construct a web that the most ardent Halloween afficionado would be proud to own.

Slugs aren't vermin. What would you expect if there was a bluebottle in the house? If a spider ran across the floor? If you spotted a fly or a ladybird on a houseplant?

That's what you should expect in this case.

This

Honestly - would you have been the same if youd seen a fly? or a centipede? A slug isnt vermin.

Your reaction far outweighs the circumstances. Are you ok?

LOL well some of you are making me laugh!

I will own that I was feeling v stressed due to the reason for my visit (not the owner's fault of course) and that probably made me feel a little less robust than normal.

I also accept that slugs happen.

What I don't accept is that I'd asked the owner to come in to see or do something about it over the previous 2 days and they'd made no effort to do so. And told me I probably brought the slug in myself (I hadn't, of that I am 100% certain). I also find it a bit icky that the evidence was already there when I arrived so when was it last cleaned?

Plus, there was nowhere except the floor to put my luggage and I didn't want slugs on my case either.

One slug? Multiple slugs? I don't know, I only saw one. I didn't ask it if its family were visiting too. And I know I almost trod on it because when I put the ceiling light on, there it was, right next to the bed at the spot that I'd got out!

MN is a nest of hyperbole at times, allow me one occasion!

What did you expect him to do about it, exactly?

hairbearbunches · 02/12/2025 13:25

OP, you're getting some right stick, they're out in force today.

FWIW, I'd be pissed off about it and want some sort of recompense because it suggests that property has a damp issue. Slugs in bedroom? FFS. Some people appear to have very low standards. We had slugs in one of my student houses because the house was damp and mouldy. They are vermin, if the landlord doesn't sort it out it will get worse. Have you got any evidence to show you contacted the landlord, an email etc? Stick to your guns, I'd be going for a full refund to serve the cheapskate fuckers right. As you say, the evidence was there when you arrived. The slug just happened to rock up a couple of hours before you did? I don't think so.

Bloozie · 02/12/2025 13:25

I live in an old house and have had to get used to the odd slug visitor. It doesn't mean it's ages since they cleaned - one of the little buggers can motor around in one evening and leave a snot trail.

I think you're over-reacting, but I can see that can kinda see this. I'm sorry for whatever else was going on that made you stressed when you arrived at the property.

For me, this wouldn't be a compensation/refund issue. If I was asked for feedback, I'd give it honestly and say the slug wasn't ideal, but it's the way it was dealt with that was worse. I might be tempted to leave a lukewarm review just because the owner's comms weren't great and they didn't do what they said they'd do. But then other AirBnB owners can see you left a pissy review over a slug and might not rent to you, so...

I'd just be quietly seething on this one.

MotherofPufflings · 02/12/2025 13:26

This isn't really any different to finding a big spider and some cobwebs. A bit unpleasant but unless you have a phobia it's really not necessary to vacate the premises

InfoSecInTheCity · 02/12/2025 13:26

We’ve had slugs in the house before, they come in through tiny gaps at the bottom of the rear door even with one of those brush draft protector things fitted. One slug leaves multiple trails across the carpet, they seem to just move slowly in circles all night so you go from nothing to multiple trails overnight.

it wouldn’t even cross my mind to call in an exterminator or vacate a property for a slug, it’s ridiculous,

BitOfAWeirdo · 02/12/2025 13:27

My chickens love eating slugs.

Next time you go away, take a chicken.

WinterHangingBasket · 02/12/2025 13:27

I wouldn't be visiting someone to pick up a slug and throw it out either.
Slugs are not floor bound, so nowhere elevated to put your case is irrelevant, you could have got slugs in it anyway.

'Almost' stepped on a slug. Bring me smelling salts. Once you have passed out next to the slug I can sprinkle them over the slug, killing it and reviving you at the same time.

ParmaVioletTea · 02/12/2025 13:27

youdontwantasluginthebedroom · 02/12/2025 12:54

I think that if you're paying to stay somewhere and there's a slug infestation, the property owner should sort it out!

Would you want to stand on a slug in your bare feet in the dark?

Slugs are horrible, but a few slugs coming inside from the garden is hardly an "infestation" !

Just get some salt and put on line of it right under the door where they're getting in from the outside.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 02/12/2025 13:30

What did you want the owner to do?! Jesus Christ. You didn't even step in it. Move on.

Oftenaddled · 02/12/2025 13:31

I prefer live slugs to dead and messes with salt. They hate light so if you are scared of them, leave a light on. But they won't hurt you.

When you saw the slug why didn’t you just get rid of it and carry on with your stay? Would you have behaved the same with a spider if you didn’t like those? I think you are a bit cheeky trying to get a refund at all so I’d stop at the one night you didn’t stay.

ShodAndShadySenators · 02/12/2025 13:33

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 02/12/2025 13:09

I made 🤢 face reading it. I'd want 3 nights refund.

I have NEVER seen slugs in a house utterly utterly grim.

Slugs appearing in houses are most likely cellar slugs, they are different from the ones outside that eat your plants. It's not a sign of dirtiness/squalor, although it is not nice and they can be a bloody nuisance (especially when they crawl onto your dishwasher's PCB and fry themselves and trip your electricity at the same time).

I could understand OP leaving early if it was rodents or wasps or something potentially hazardous, but slugs are not. Annoying as hell, yes. Standing on one would be gross (much worse outcome for the slug though) but not THAT bad.

I can see the property owner or agent disputing this, as slugs - or one slug, as that's all OP saw - are not a health hazard.

One or two slugs does not suggest a damp issue. We get the odd slug in my house, I just pick them up and put them outside. You'd start to worry if there were hundreds of the things.

And you think you deserve a full refund for a holiday rental because of 1 single slug? Hahahahaha no.

ThatLemonBear · 02/12/2025 13:39

This thread has given me a much needed laugh so thank you for posting OP (I can’t imagine you’ll be getting a refund for the presence of a single slug)

PrincessFluffyPants · 02/12/2025 13:42

I'm here wondering what you expected the property owner to do to show you they were dealing with the "infestation"? Enter the property (when you weren't there? another reason to complain?) and sprinkle blue slug pellets? Remove the skirting boards to check behind them? Lift the floor? What would have been a reasonable response?

Lennonjingles · 02/12/2025 13:42

We stayed in a holiday cottage on open farm land, we had loads of spiders, woodlice, flys and wasps daily. Unfortunately, although something I don’t like, I appreciate there’s not a lot the owners can do, particularly in our case after rain, also slug pellets are now banned in the uk, so there’s no way of stopping them. We’ve had slugs and snails in our home, we think they must have been attached to our dog or our shoes, although we wipe our feet, they still get in.

Lunde · 02/12/2025 13:43

Wildlife getting into the house is a fact of life in the country - all sorts of creatures try to get in/near the warmth of the house when winter sets in - slugs, squirrels, spiders, field mice, queen wasps .... last year I heard a rustling in the bush near my bedroom window at 2 am and found a badger looking in at me.

A single slug is not an infestation - it's a really minor annoyance. (OK it was slightly annoying when our cat swallowed a 6 inch/15cm slug whole and threw it up still alive).

blobby10 · 02/12/2025 13:44

Having also stepped on a slug whilst barefoot albeit outside, I sympathise with the Eeuugghh factor - its almost as bad as treading on dog poo whilst barefoot. I was also quite surprised at the number of people on here who say its normal to have slugs on a carpet - I've lived in houses in both town and country and never had any slugs further in than a conservatory and certainly never on carpets. You learn something every day it seems!!

soupforbrains · 02/12/2025 13:47

I have a huge phobia of slugs and snails. Even reading your post nearly made me vomit. I would have been distraught and extremely distressed throughout this. Personally I feel you should this be paid a full refund and compensation equally whatever the going rate is for someone on I’m A Celeb.

LIZS · 02/12/2025 13:49

What did you expect the owner to do? Can you not bear to evict said slug yourself? If the place was damp and covered in slug trails you might have a point but you are being ott to cut short your stay on the basis of one.

SnipThoseApronStrings · 02/12/2025 13:49

I’m not that bothered by slugs.

OP isn’t going to get a refund because a slug got into the house 😂
