I feel terrible, taken out of school for Lapland UK

I’ve taken my daughter out of school today she’s 5 for Lapland UK. We don’t have a lot of money and her brother was born extremely premature last year and she missed out on a lot of things because of it.

she’s the kindest soul, she’s really clever and she’s just amazing.

im not justifying anything as id never take my child out of school, but we won VIP at Lapland UK.

an experience I’d never ever consider looking at usually and its not an experience I can turn down.

my daughter has 100% attendance, I’m worried what the school will do? I’ve been honest and she will be back tomorrow.

am I a bad mum? 😭

If I was her teacher, I'd mark her present.

No you wouldn’t🙄
but any child who is there for afternoon register gets there mark at our school…..so if you take your DC out at 2pm the mark is already there

RavenhairedRachel · 03/12/2025 17:59

No stop beating yourself up. Have a fantastic day

3luckystars · 03/12/2025 17:59

its one day and she is 5. Throw the letter in the bin.

MummaHud · 03/12/2025 17:59

Thank you so much everyone, we had the most MAGICAL day, seeing the magic in my little girls eyes after an emotional year was everything, and even my 18 month old who has no clue expressed magic in his eyes too, seeing everything 🫶🏼

my daughter was back at school today and I asked her if she told the teachers what she did, and she said she did.. I asked what the teachers said and she said they said ‘It sounds absolutely amazing, tell us more.. what did Father Christmas tell you’

I’ve heard no more from the school and no letter in her bag, only just a response for me telling them where she was going and they said it would be marked as an unauthorised absence!

thanks again all, what an experience I’ll never forget and I don’t think my 5 year old will ever forget either- she’s been reading the map we got given ever since xx

No you are not a bad mum. No one would pass this up! That one day will mean nothing going forward & she will remember this forever! Have fun xx

SusiQ18472638 · 03/12/2025 18:02

I would judge you more for making her go to school instead of the VIP Lapland uk experience to be honest! 😂

Mabiscuit · 03/12/2025 18:02

When my DS has the dentist, we'll get lunch and then play laser tag afterward. His attendance is almost 100%. I'd definitely take him out for a day out like that, they're rare days they'll remember.

Fredthefrog · 03/12/2025 18:02

The school probably won't care. Hope you all had fun

Onthepage · 03/12/2025 18:03

No it’s a great opportunity and something you will all enjoy. Just don’t make a habit of it as it sends out the wrong message to the child ie school
isn’t important. A good education is invaluable and one of the most important gifts you can give your child for the future

No you are not , you are a good Mum. You have given your daughter a wonderful experience that will stay with her. When she thinks back on Christmas she will remember the magic of that. It will barely affect her attendance . You did the right thing. I would have done the same as a mother and I’m also a teacher.

i wouldn’t have even told the school I was going either

CopeNorth · 03/12/2025 18:06

Enjoy!

GabGab123 · 03/12/2025 18:09

Have the best day!!!! You sound like an amazing mum. Making memories which will last a lifetime!

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 03/12/2025 18:10

No, and no idea why you feel bad.
I took my son out for a week to go to Disney in year 5.
His education hasn’t been affected!

Pineapplecolada1 · 03/12/2025 18:11

I’m a headteacher and I’d say go!!!! It’s very unlikely you’ll be fined for an absence less than 3 days

Sassylovesbooks · 03/12/2025 18:18

No. Don't beat yourself up over it. Your daughter is 5, she isn't going to fall behind because of one day off school. If you were taking her out for a 3 week holiday, then that might be a bit different, but you aren't. Enjoy your day!!

Blablibladirladada · 03/12/2025 18:21

Gosh what a horrible system to make parents feel bad because they offer this kind of things to their child(ren).

I assume you don’t win Lapland every term? If not, you are good to go and please enjoy! One day off of course mean she didn’t get the info but I am sure it also happens when she dreams away as it happened to us all so…no guilt here. Build your memories!

GlobalTravellerbutespeciallyBognor · 03/12/2025 18:25

If asked, maybe it would be good to be able to let the school know that you have shown your D on an atlas where you live and where you are going, in order to turn it into an ‘educational geographical experience’. Have a wonderful time OP.

Dawnb19 · 03/12/2025 18:28

Enjoy your trip. Family time is just as important as school. Especially as you've been through a lot.

Doubledenim305 · 03/12/2025 18:30

Bet her primary teacher would have done the same🤣 and headteacher 🤣
Would be absolute madness not to go.
Enjoy 🎉🎉🎉

IhateBegonias · 03/12/2025 18:30

No! Of course not. I hope you enjoyed yourself.

Wynter25 · 03/12/2025 18:32

Youre a brilliant mam. They wont do anything x

DuchessofSuffolk · 03/12/2025 18:32

Go on the once in a lifetime trip. They’re only little once. Sometimes memories are more important than an 100% attendance record

Jack80 · 03/12/2025 18:35

They will understand

hcee19 · 03/12/2025 18:36

You are a great mum, just wanting to do the best for your little girl. Stop worrying, all will be ok

Carpedimum · 03/12/2025 18:37

Not at all; hope you all have a lovely time!
