So my child today was in nursery for an hour exactly when I got the call that he had a temperature and I needed to come get her. They gave her Calpol with my consent. I was at the nursery within 15 minutes and when I collected she had no temperature. All day she has had no temperature and is not showing any signs of illness. She has been her normal self all day playing with her toys and being a typical four year old. I have asked my her if she feels unwell and she keeps telling me no mummy.
I have just called the nursery to tell them that she is absolutely fine and has no illness nor temperature and maybe she was just hot from all the thermal wear and running around. They have said that’s great but because she had a temperature today she can’t come in until Wednesday.

I was told when I collected her that it was only her and one other child in nursery because all the children from her class were off with illness’.

is this normal or am I being unreasonable?

What is the nature of your complaint? That you think they lied or that they were mistaken?

i don’t think they lied. But I think they mistook a temperature for being hot in general.

Why would she need to be off until Wednesday? Isn't that a D&V thing?

I wouldn't consent to calpol again, if you think they are making things up.

What do you mean by d&v? I don’t think they made it up. I think they just assumed it was a temperature because most of the children from her class are off sick. In general she gets really warm quite easily especially when running around.

Sorry forgot to say that their policy says if they have a temp they have to be off for 24 hours after the temp goes.

Never heard of being forced to be off because of a temperature. Usually that's just when they have sickness or diarrhoea

Tell them she'll be in tomorrow if she doesn't have a temp in the morning. They can check her temp themselves when you get there if they're concerned.

Luxio · 01/12/2025 17:28

Well that's tomorrow morning then isn't to not Wednesday.

I would be calling to say she will be coming in because she has no fever or signs of illness.

Cinai · 01/12/2025 17:28

Yep, same rule in my nursery, bloody annoying but nothing you can do as it will say in your contract that if they check her temperature and turns out she has a temperature, she’s off for 24/48 hours.

Yh this the case here. It’s really frustrating because she is not sick at all. I have never taken her in if she is poorly and wouldn’t even think to do so.

She had only been there an hour and the policy is 24 hours so just take her in a little later tomorrow. I’m sure they will complain but it’s their policy so
all you can do is follow it. Our old nursery had this same policy and it was silly at times

Sausagescanfly · 01/12/2025 17:32

24 hours is up at about 10am tomorrow (guessing the timing), so that's when I'd drop her back.

Id assume they actually used a digital thermometer on her, didn't they? You can't just feel a child with a hand.

I've only heard of exclusion times for D&V, plus other named things, not a general fever.

ChocHotolate · 01/12/2025 17:33

Anyone else wondering if the only other child from her class was also sent home “sick”?

I have to admit I was wondering. It sounds like a great way to free up staff.

Lokielo · 01/12/2025 17:34

Me.

Also wondering if they actually measured her temperature?

Well when I phoned I did say that I will bring her in tomorrow lunchtime if no fever persists. And they say not at all. They said we will see you on Wednesday if the fever does not come back.

That’s ridiculous. At that age mine got temps with teething. If they were sent home and then couldn’t return for 2 days they’d never be there

Didn't you clarify why Wednesday when their own policy says 24 hours?

Sausagescanfly · 01/12/2025 17:36

I'd not want nursery staff who can't count to 24 looking after my child.

Well they said it was 38.1 but. How does a temp of 38.1 appear within an hour and disappear within under 15 minutes of Calpol. My bet is that my child was just hot and bothered and cooled down by resting.

Peridoteage · 01/12/2025 17:38

Yeah what this is is the nursery staff only having two kids left so if they can send them home, its a free day off.

I would need to see a video of them taking my child's temperature with no jumper on before I'd come and collect.

Well this is the thing. I sent her in a thermal vest. Long sleeve shirt and a jumper. Mainly because they play outside for quite long periods. But usually I would think common sense would prevail and take off some layers a bit then redo the temp test after ten mins or so.

I and many others feel your pain. I had one sent home from school and not allowed in for two days because he told them he’d been sick the day before. He’d gorged himself on chocolate, biscuits and cake at a party and he threw some of it up. Absolutely nothing wrong with him except being greedy.

38.1°. That’s convenient. I bet they had a woolly hat on her and she’d her running so around so got hot, then taken her temperature straight away. That’s enough to throw off a tympanic reading and probably an IR (which are notoriously inaccurate anyway).

Yup it’s very annoying especially when we as parents know there is nothing wrong.
I guess I’ll try make a fun day out of tomorrow and maybe do the morning cinema or something.

This exact thing happened to me today too, and last week as well. He was running round outside with friends when I picked him up.

Luxio · 01/12/2025 17:52

I wouldn't be making exciting plans for tomorrow. I would be taking her into nursery to be honest. There's absolutely no reason she needs to be off until Wednesday.
