So my child today was in nursery for an hour exactly when I got the call that he had a temperature and I needed to come get her. They gave her Calpol with my consent. I was at the nursery within 15 minutes and when I collected she had no temperature. All day she has had no temperature and is not showing any signs of illness. She has been her normal self all day playing with her toys and being a typical four year old. I have asked my her if she feels unwell and she keeps telling me no mummy.
I have just called the nursery to tell them that she is absolutely fine and has no illness nor temperature and maybe she was just hot from all the thermal wear and running around. They have said that’s great but because she had a temperature today she can’t come in until Wednesday.

I was told when I collected her that it was only her and one other child in nursery because all the children from her class were off with illness’.

is this normal or am I being unreasonable?

I would email the manager personally and tell them that as per the nursery policy 24 hours after her ‘temperature’ is X time tomorrow so that is the time your child will be back at nursery as she did not have a temperature upon collection and has been absolutely fine ever since. I would bet money on the other child also having been sent home sick and them being short staffed in other rooms for tomorrow so they’ve now managed to free up the staff in your daughter’s room so that they don’t need to organise and pay for agency staff. Or some other reason that makes it convenient for them to have that room closed for the day.

I'd be wanting to know what prompted them to take her temperature in the first place.
Did they say?

No they didn’t and this did not even occur to me.

My Dd takes after her father and her temp shoots up the minute she gets a sniffle. When she was a toddler I've seen her happily playing about the house with a temp of 39+ It used to take all my nerve not to rush her to Gp, but commonsense had to prevail if she appeared fine. I'd be suspicious too that they couldn't justify staffing one room with just 2 children

In the event this happens again….. I’d insist they check again 30 minutes later.
Will you still have to pay for tomorrow? That would really wind me up! Having to pay for a days care she can’t have purely because they are being ridiculous!

What do you mean by d&v? I don’t think they made it up. I think they just assumed it was a temperature because most of the children from her class are off sick. In general she gets really warm quite easily especially when running around.

Surely they took it her temperature with a thermometer. Ask what it was. This only reads raised temperature when you have one and not just warm. Calpol can take down a temperature quickly and makes child feel better. If they didn’t take a temperature and record it I wouldn’t accept having to stay off. I work with children so I know what I’m talking about.

pollymere · 03/12/2025 23:14

I always thought they'd give Calpol and then take no further action if temp was then normal. Did they only take one temp? Presumably it will be recorded in a Day Book somewhere... I'd have expected the temperature to be taken after Calpol was administered too before calling you with an hour elapse.

It does sound very suspicious to me! Nothing to do with whether your child was warm or not... If they weren't ill why were they given Calpol and then you came and collected your child who clearly had no temperature. Kids also get temperatures from having vaccinations etc.

Probably mistook the temperature for her being warm layered up. In theory most nurseries have to monitor temperature for 20 mins before calling parent to give calpol unless their temperature is already at 38 degrees. Also yes sickness and diarrhoea is 48 hours since last bout but calpol is 24hours since last dose

Some of the recent posts @pollymere @stample are assuming that all nurseries have the same policies. They dont, each setting will have their own
