Initials ASS?

Namehelp31 · 30/11/2025 22:15

Favourite girl name is Anna. Problem is she'd have a double barrelled surname with two S's (think 'Simpson-Smith').

For those with older children with double barrelled surnames, do they tend to get abbreviated to the initials of both surnames or just the first? So at school, would she be Anna S, or Anna S-S?

She will have a middle name but we're aware middle names are rarely used.

Is this a definite no? Do we need to rule out Anna and all other 'A' names?

YABU - you can't do that to a child
YANBU - baby ASS will be fine

I couldn’t give them the initials ASS

if the first name was not negotiable I’d change the surname.

JellyIegs · 30/11/2025 22:17

Sorry OP but would you want the initials ASS? I wouldn’t, regardless of how my initials were or weren’t used at school.

Lobsterteapot · 30/11/2025 22:17

No you absolutely can’t give your child the initials ASS

LeedsZebra90 · 30/11/2025 22:18

No - i wouldnt do it. my kids all do different sports/activities, the majority have their initials on their kit/clothes (this doesn't include middle names!!)

Rosilil · 30/11/2025 22:19

I have a double barrelled name and I’ve had lots of occasions of having initials as some sort of identifier, my university email was the Inititials of my name and then numbers, so hers would be [email protected]
i wouldn’t do it personally.

SheSpeaks · 30/11/2025 22:19

Even Anna S is a bit too much for me as bottom jokes go.

SusanChurchouse · 30/11/2025 22:20

Definitely not. In fact, I chose a different middle name for my daughter than I’d originally wanted because I didn’t want her to have the initials ARS cos it was a bit too close to arse.

Catcatcat111 · 30/11/2025 22:20

No I wouldn’t.

Marble10 · 30/11/2025 22:20

Does it have to be a double barrelled surname? AS is fine

Spirallingdownwards · 30/11/2025 22:20

How about Hannah?

Lmnop22 · 30/11/2025 22:20

My nephew is double barreled and his school definitely use both first initials of the two surnames so ASS would be your DD’s initials there.

Why not Emma or something similar instead?

dizzydizzydizzy · 30/11/2025 22:21

Sorry no, please don't do that.

Can you use a name ending in Anna? Eg Joanna, Suzanna. Alanna

The you could call her Anna. I had a slightly similar dilemma with DC2. DC2 is always known by their NN but tbe official name is a longer version.

Coldiron · 30/11/2025 22:21

Can you give her a name which you could shorten to Anna? Eg Rosanna?
edit: sorry cross posted

Clearinguptheclutter · 30/11/2025 22:22

No, but it’s easily solved with the addition of a middle name

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 30/11/2025 22:24

Just pick a good middle initial and use it. DS2’s initials form another name which he uses as a pseudonym. Think, Thomas Ian Minchin.

Maybe Anna Lou Simpson Smith, or Anna Katrina S-S.

As long as you use it a lot, it will catch on. Label bottles, bags etc.

Mistyglade · 30/11/2025 22:24

Good god no. Can you even imagine the pisstaking she’ll get at school. She’ll love you for lumbering her with that.

Maybeishouldcrochet · 30/11/2025 22:25

My husband added an extra middle name so our child wouldn't be FEW she is FEBW.... I would do the same....

Mothwing · 30/11/2025 22:25

Sorry but I really wouldn't. How about you use Anna as a middle name and choose another first name?

Maybeishouldcrochet · 30/11/2025 22:26

Also be careful with the choosing of her name a friend at school was Chris Peacock- probably as embarrassing as ASS.....

SheSpeaks · 30/11/2025 22:26

S names cannot be matched with

A
AR
B
FF
X

I wouldn’t be super happy about D for an SS name either.

Names are hard but SS is extra tricky and has its own connotations.

Namehelp31 · 30/11/2025 22:28

To clarify, there definitely will be a middle name and it will likely begin with C.

So full initials would be ACSS. Just assuming the middle name would usually be dropped and only first name surname initials used.

Thanks for all the replies so far, looks like we'll have to start thinking of non-A names!

What about Hannah instead? Or Emma is similar?

FortunesFool · 30/11/2025 22:31

My work colleague’s initials are TWT. We are often referred to by our initials on documents (teachers) She finds it hilarious!

Panickedandpained · 30/11/2025 22:38

I have a cousin who gave thier daughter the initials ARS, poor kid is now a teen and dropped her middle name when it was pointed out to her.

mondaytosunday · 30/11/2025 22:39

School - no but their peers certainly will! Don’t do it.
