Speeding on Motorway

Somersetmum100 · 30/11/2025 17:52

Anyone able to help. Think I might have been caught speeding. On the motorway this morning, think I got clocked by a police van on the bridge above. I was definitely not doing 80 but was constantly fluctuating 77/78/79. There is often 3mph between my Speedo and Google maps on my phone. No other speeding fines ever but really worried what might happen. Struggle with anxiety and worry about absolutely everything but I can't think straight and can't eat - please help, how much trouble am I likely to be in

Why is it so worrying to get some points on your license?

NigelForage · 30/11/2025 17:55

Because that's all that will happen. You're not gonna be put into prison for it!

user1471442488 · 30/11/2025 17:56

If you have been caught it will be a fine and 3 points. If you’re in England or Wales you can do the speeding awareness course to avoid the points, but this is not available in Scotland.

ilovesooty · 30/11/2025 17:56

You'll probably be offered a speed awareness course.

holachicatita · 30/11/2025 17:56

If you weren't doing over 80 you'll be fine. I was caught doing 73 on a 60 and was offered the speed awareness course as it was my first offence. It was actually a good thing to do, had made me think about my speed constantly now.

LoveWine123 · 30/11/2025 17:58

How can we help exactly? Would it help if we tell you not to speed anymore? Perhaps a healthy dose of fear can help with you keeping to the speed limit next time.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 30/11/2025 17:58

You’ll be fine. If you were caught, it won’t be anything major and just take it as a reminder not to speed.

I think it's just not knowing what will happen and I have never been in trouble for anything - ever!

You seem concerned that you were caught, not that you were clearly over-the limit for some time. How about you stick to the rules in future?

I'm not sure I'm just absolutely panicking, my own fault I know

What do you think might happen, have you not heard of speed awarenesa courses?

cestlavielife · 30/11/2025 18:01

Learn how to use speed limiter on your car.

NigelForage · 30/11/2025 18:02

So didn't you just google it? I don't get why there's this level of drama.

Would that apply? It's says online about the police using their discretion

ViolaPlains · 30/11/2025 18:03

Take the speed awareness course. You’re not in trouble.

TwistedWonder · 30/11/2025 18:04

You’ll get the offer of either a motorway awareness training session or 3 points.

I recently did the motorway awareness course and it was ok. 2.5 hours online that’s all.

If you havent done one in the last 3 years it's basically always offered. Can do it online. It costs the same as paying the fine that you'd have to pay if taking the points. The course is actually quite useful and interesting.

Might seem over the top to others but things like this get to me - sorry, I just catastrophise

You will get a letter through the post in a about a week. It will be a notice of intention to prosecute. Follow the instructions on the letter to respond to confirm you were driving online.

The day after you will have an email through to say you can book a speed awareness. You can chose to do this online or in person. It's all very easy and straightforward.

Thank you for being helpful and kind

If you were caught you should receive a s172 notice (notice of intended prosecution) within 2 weeks. This is sent to the registered keeper of the car and the recipient must state who the driver was. It is very important that you (or the RK if that's not you) fill it in and return according to the instructions, as failure to do so is an offence in itself. If you are posting, get a proof of postage. Then you will hear from the police as to what they intend to do. Agree with PPs, would either be fixed penalty (3 points plus £100 fine) or a speed awareness course.

SeaAndStars · 30/11/2025 18:11

Why were you driving so fast OP?

GinJeanie · 30/11/2025 18:13

You'll be fine. I've only been done once on the motorway. It was much worse than yours - 91 mph. I'm not proud and it was first time ever getting points, which has made me take more care going forwards. I got 3 points and a £100 fine...
