Is this a police job? Threatened by Vinted seller

Reasonswhy · 28/11/2025 14:36

I know I’m not, but posting for traffic as no idea what to do.
Item for Christmas arrived today and was clearly fake so applied for a refund via Vinted. I’ve had a series of threatening messages from the seller saying he needs the money, and he has my address so will come and find me. He included a photo of himself holding an air rifle. I’m not easily spooked but feel really scared now as he does have my address and seems very angry. I’ve filed a “help” through Vinted but they may not even read it for 48 hours. Do I call 111? On my own with 2 kids so feel really on edge.

It may well be wrong but the officers dealing with it need to follow procedure. If they don't there is every possibility that the case would not even reach trial.

I'm sure if you were a victim of crime you would want to know that everything is being done by the book rather than corners being cut.

I will be honest every time I have been victim of a crime police have done nothing. Annoying but they were only property related so whilst pathetic not physically or mentally harming. I think this one is scaring OP. Threats like this where someone has made a new account to threaten absolutely should be prioritised.

Anyway I have said enough about this now. Think I have made my view pretty clear.

No, it's not housed in the UK. Therefore compelling them is not a guarantee. International law doesn't allow for that.

See the issues we with had with the likes of Apple and Google for a long long time..... They just ignored us back in 2005-2012ish. Not even a reply to a court order.

That explains it. I was thinking surely the police can just get a warrant and ask for the details legally.

Bloody ridiculous situation: individuals and companies have international reach but there’s no (or few) international laws to protect the public, in line with the first duty of a state. I wish people could recognise that this is why states of whatever form were invented, to ensure a single community covered and bound by a single law. This aspect of the internet is breaking societies.

In reality you wouldn't have known what they did. Just because there wasn't a positive outcome doesn't mean they didn't do anything.

Also, none of us know how much priority is being given to this case.

Newsenmum · 01/12/2025 19:21

Has he sent any more messages?
did you get your refund?

ArtesianWater · 01/12/2025 20:10

Sorry you are experiencing this OP, it sounds awful but I bet he has no real intention at all of acting on his threats. Would you consider taking down your Vinted account? I would do it to stop this nonsense.

I've also heard Americans say it.

Thank you. I was unaware that Americans use it.

Lostlittlegirl · 02/12/2025 07:10

So why was Graham Lineham arrested for a tweet. But you are threatened online with a gun but nothing is done.

Fucking outrageous

Because the Lineham case was down to a complaint by a TRA who is highly litigious and he and he mates know how to threaten legal action until the police do what they want. It's a disgrace.

Also, this case is a photo taken from the Internet therefore hugely lowering the level of threat and risk.

Strange that, because the police have taken it very seriously when people have complained about being upset by comments on Twitter/X AND have got the 'offenders' detailes from Twitter/X AND have gone round their houses, had them interviewed at the station and so on...

Yup, I made a similar comment much earlier in the thread that they'd take it seriously if someone had been misgendered 🤣

🤔 which actually isn't funny.

If they knew who had posted threatening OP they would do something. Unfortunately they don’t, which is why it’s gone off to the cyber crime department to be written on a post-it note and binned. The people getting dragged in for wrong-think are easy targets as they aren’t hiding and as a PP stated, they are part of an orchestrated campaign where lots and lots of people make complaints and trigger police to take action.

And comments have been made to explain why it is often difficult to trace users of sites such as Vinted compared to Twitter etc. It doesn't mean that they won't try.

northern2025 · 02/12/2025 13:38

Who are they going to arrest ?

Theunamedcat · 02/12/2025 13:42

They cant hide on vinted either if they expect to get paid

@LemaxObsessive if she meant it or didn't mean it, I'm sure you got the gist of what she was saying. Not sure it was worthy of a post requesting clarification

I’ve never heard it before so thought it was a typo. I’ll decide if something is worthy of my time posting it, thanks! 🤨

My son was groomed online and I found him watching adult live interactive content. He was 10 at the time.

The police did F all!!!
Didn't take our Chromebook for investigation or anything.

Said because we 'deleted it's, there was "nothing more they can do".

We didn't delete anything.
We just closed down the tab that the website was on.

Please don't be surprised if you don't hear anything more from them.

Edited

Unfortunately when Graham spread lies and doxed a friend online, putting her children (who she had given birth to before everyone tries to do the whole "I bet she is really a man" thing) the police took zero interest.

Puddingwombles · 04/12/2025 12:34

Christ how scary!

It makes you wonder if it happens so often that they simply can’t investigate these sorts of crimes.

People are so quick to judge parents but there simply isn’t the help / resources out there to help us !

There is a new crime out there now too… drug dealers are using children… so basically they groom a child and pay £2000 into a child’s bank account and the child then forwards it to (I’m guessing) the bigger drug dealer) keeping £100 for themselves..
I’m guessing this makes it harder to prosecute the dealers..

The internet is so dangerous as most of us parents think we know, but actually don’t know what half the dangers of it are. Parental controls can be got round too. And not giving young teens tech at all is easier said than done.
