Partner and my dog

Craftydafty1 · 27/11/2025 20:13

My dog is big and liles to jump up when excited. My partber brought a parcel that had been delivered to the house.

My dog grabbed her toy and jumped at him and hit him right in his "privates" he let out a "ouch" then hit my dog with parcel.

He said it was an instant reaction to being hurt. I said it was an accident.

The parcel has a light rubber tube in it so was v.light.

He said aibu as it was a reaction and she needs trained and he doesnt appreciate being hurt. He then patted her and said sorry.

Aibu or is he?

Is this animal abuse?

Dogs exist now because humans breed them. We breed them to satisfy our needs and not to allow them a natural life. We train them to be what we want them to be, rather than what nature dictates.
OP's dog is simply behaving like a dog. It is doing what it is born to do. It is humans that dictate how we want them to behave.
The whole concept of adapting another species to satisfy our whims is questionable.

What planet have you beamed down from? Humans have domesticated dogs for over 10,000 years. This mutually beneficial relationship predates agriculture. Do you think only wolves and dingos should exist? Shall we just stop farming too and go back to living in caves?

Never acceptable to hit a dog, untrained or not!

Have you seen how dogs correct each other for bad behaviour? If often involves teeth.

As Minchin pithily says:"Just because ideas are persistent does not mean they are worthy."
Animals have indeed been taken over by humans for a very long time to benefit us. This does not mean they should be treated as humanoid. Trying to bend them to our will comes with problems because nature will out. Underneath all the training and socialising the wild animal remains.
The OP's dog is doing what comes naturally to him. Does he want to be turned into a substitute human? Who knows? It us still a question to be asked.

dottiedodah · 29/11/2025 10:16

I adore dogs .However I think anyone would be miffed if jumped at and hurt into the bargain! He got caught unawares is all.No is not animal abuse. If only real animal abuse was this mild .Train doggy in future .there is a note to keep doggy in another room when postie arrives from the PO!

OhDearMuriel · 29/11/2025 10:26

FGS stop being ignorant and train your dog. Believe me people hate untrained dogs big or small. It’s not the dog’s fault, it’s your fault.

Your partner shouldn’t have hit it, but maybe it genuinely was a reflex reaction. It’s your responsibility to do something.

So Mischance wants to change 10k years of human experience because she knows better. Hmmm…

We teach our children manners rather than let them be the feral little animals they’d like to be. No difference with dogs. In the absence of humans dogs teach each other manners with a growl/shove/nip. In fact all animals that live together teach their youngsters the rules of society. Otherwise that society breaks down. Im sure you’ve read Lord of the Flies.

LadyBlakeneysHanky · 29/11/2025 12:47

Please train your big dog not to jump up at people. It is all too likely to frighten or irritate or even hurt people; & there’s a real risk that some day it will do this to a stranger in the park, and that stranger will kick the dog in self defence, and/or report it to the police.

Training dogs matters. That’s the issue here. Your dog’s behaviour & your own failure to see this. Your partner did nothing wrong at all.

The people suggesting you can infer from this that your partner will hurt a child are being ridiculous. I have dogs & children. The situations being - madly- compared on this thread, defending yourself against a large dog jumping up & child abuse, basically, are completely different. Even suggesting they are the same is imo minimising the reality of violence against children.

You urgently need to train your dog.

Nope ... just want dog owners to be aware.

The assumption that animals are for our use comes with the need to understand that at heart they are just that .... animals.
Any dog owner who says their dog wouldn't hurt a fly is entirely missing that point.

The relationship between humans and the animal kingdom is complex and morally chaotic. We slaughter some animals to eat, but dote on pets and bury them with full honours when they die. We actively protect some species knowing that their survival will wipe out the animals on which they predate.

There is no logic to any of it, and the morality is debatable.

We start from the basis that we have a right to control the animal kingdom, to fill emotional gaps in our lives by making pets of them, to decide which species should live or die .....

But the bottom line is that animals are wild creatures at heart with the instincts that go with that. Every animal who is forced to comply with the social niceties of our homes is having its very nature distorted.

Is that OK? Who knows?

Cherrysoup · 29/11/2025 13:23

I’d be very pissed off if my Dh hit the dog, but he never would because they don’t jump up. One of them is very clumsy and accidentally thumps into us and god forbid you bend to change into walking boots when they’re in the same room, heads like concrete. Train them both, OP!

You have to contact mumsnet support to get a thread deleted. They probably will not see your 'please delete' messages.

So, let me get this straight. You start a frothy, weird post, asking a really dumb question, then don't like the answers you're getting, so want it deleted?! Is it a slow day?!
How old are you? Are you always this dramatic? Did you want us all to justify your concerns and tell you to LTB?!
Tapping a dog when it has caused pain to someone is not animal abuse and you know that full well. It was a knee jerk reaction to being twatted in the bollocks! (I haven't got balls, but I can imagine it's not the nicest thing to have to endure when they're injured!) And he hardly beat your dog senseless.
As countless other posters have said, take some responsibility and train your bloody dog! And if you don't know that this is the most very basic responsibility of owning a dog, you really shouldn't have one at all.
So sorry that this post hasn't gone the way you'd have liked it to, all you've done is create yourself a pile on. But that's what you get for asking a stupid question 🤷🏼‍♀️

PInkyStarfish · 30/11/2025 11:46

No dog big or small should be leaping at anyone when excited. That’s why responsible owners train their dogs to avoid anyone being hurt or their dog being hurt.

Mumsnet please remove my thread 😢😢😢

Deleting the thread might put the problem out of sight and out of mind for you, but the problem will still exist: you need to train your dog.

Exactly. Anyway I sincerely hope MN doesn't delete the thread. if you post in AIBU you have to accept that you might get responses you don't like.

Nothing on here is abusive to the OP so it should stand.
