Help! Why do I keep waking up ROASTING HOT and sweaty?

Just wondered if anyone else has experience this and knows how to sort it because it’s driving me mad 😩

basically I’m in my mid 20s and I’m definitely not pregnant nor menopausal. But recently I keep having episodes of waking up in hot sweats- quite literally soaked with sweat and boiling hot. I’m sleeping with my windows wide open and my bed is literally under them, I’ve got my summer quilt so it’s not particularly heavy, I wear my normal pjs I always wear, the temperature is set to 16 deg overnight- basically I haven’t changed anything in my life so I don’t know why it’s started happening. I usually feel cold going to bed so I would normally take a hot water bottle but I’ve stopped doing that now and I’m still waking up during the night absolutely sweltering. I’m normally a freezing cold person and am normally always baltic and this is completely new for me. I literally live in one of the coldest parts of the uk and it’s freezing outside so I’ve no idea why this is happening or how to stop it? Anyone ever experienced this? Thanks

Have you been to the GP? Get your hormone levels checked out. Could also be anxiety, or reaction to medication?

Do you have a memory foam mattress or topper? If no obvious cause like that (I’m awake because I left the electric throw on the bed and it’s too hot) then probably best to go to GP and ask for blood tests to see why it’s happening.

I used to get this in my 20s a few days before my period — down to hormone fluctuations.

Do you eat many sugary foods? I used to have quite a poor diet including a lot of sugar. I would wake up drenched in sweat during the night when the sugar hit wore off and my blood sugar levels were crashing. Cutting out sugar in the evenings (at least) really helped.

Also as the other comment suggested, a memory foam mattress? When I tried the famous Emma mattress it was like sleeping in a sauna! I returned it after two nights of sweaty sleep.

Are you on antidepressants? Could be SSRI side effect.

Me also. Happened in my late teens early twenties. For me they went away on their own around the time my period became regular and predictable.

See your doctor. There are a lot of minor issues that cause night sweats but there are also one or two serious ones. Get it checked.

Is the temperature dropping to below 16, heating firing on and making you too hot?
i have to turn my heating down to 15 overnight or I’d be the same. I can’t sleep at all if the heating is on

See your GP. There are lots of possibilities but a friend of mine had this when she was in her late 20s, had lots of bloods done and she had an issue with her thyroid.

Have you started using a different washing powder / liquid as rhat could be the cause. If not,

are you using a new shower gel or body moisturiser ? Anything new putting on your skin before bed?

Check your mattress and if you can sleep somewhere else - on another bed or if you can’t on the sofa to check if the same thing happens.

If you are still sweating try sleeping wearing something different too or if you can go to sleep naked too.

All to help a process of deduction.

In addition in your notes app on your phone or on a pad etc, when you wake up sweating write down every feeling you have. Are you thirsty? Do you feel light headed? Do you feel dizzy? Do you feel tired? Is your skin hot and if so: where exactly? Does your throat hurt? Write everything down.
Note down what you ate, what time you ate it too. Log all of the feelings no matter how small for a couple of weeks, each day.
you could also for the two weeks -

Have a shower not a bath before bed.
Dont eat anything after 6pm for two weeks.
cut out sugary drinks / coffee / tea after 6pm.
drink a lot of water during the day.

See your GP and tell them all the symptoms. Get your blood tested at very least for hormonal health, thyroid health, liver and kidney health, heart health. Get your heart rate, lung capacity checked too.

You may have an allergy to your pjs or a new skin product, or one you’ve been using you can get an allergy out of nowhere out of the blue. Your mattress may be cause of sweating. You may have sleep apnea. Your blood tests may show something or not. But until run a process of elimination - you won’t know. Am sure it’s something simple.

Get your thyroid checked. It messes with your bodies ability to regulate your own temperature and if you overheat your struggle to cool down without external help. Sometimes your temp can also drop out of nowhere and you struggle to warm up again.

I came on to say thyroid disease. I began in the same way. It can be nasty, but it's treatable. I would see your GP though, other conditions that are more serious can cause similar problems.

Go to your GP ASAP. Night sweats can be indicative of several health problems, some serious. Get it checked out now.

I had a phase of hot sweats in the night in my 20s and it just passed. It was at a stressful time in my life. Definitely double check the heating isn’t coming on. Also, memory foam makes me boiling hot! If you’ve ruled things like those out it’s worth getting checked out with GP.

You absolutely should see your GP.

Could be any number of reasons, no-one here will be able to diagnose which it is!

My bet is premature menopause. It can occur at your age.

Hormones can be thrown off for lots of reasons unrelated to pregnancy / peri so could still be the reason. Agree that your GP can almost certainly help.
