Help! Why do I keep waking up ROASTING HOT and sweaty?

Just wondered if anyone else has experience this and knows how to sort it because it’s driving me mad 😩

basically I’m in my mid 20s and I’m definitely not pregnant nor menopausal. But recently I keep having episodes of waking up in hot sweats- quite literally soaked with sweat and boiling hot. I’m sleeping with my windows wide open and my bed is literally under them, I’ve got my summer quilt so it’s not particularly heavy, I wear my normal pjs I always wear, the temperature is set to 16 deg overnight- basically I haven’t changed anything in my life so I don’t know why it’s started happening. I usually feel cold going to bed so I would normally take a hot water bottle but I’ve stopped doing that now and I’m still waking up during the night absolutely sweltering. I’m normally a freezing cold person and am normally always baltic and this is completely new for me. I literally live in one of the coldest parts of the uk and it’s freezing outside so I’ve no idea why this is happening or how to stop it? Anyone ever experienced this? Thanks

GP or practice nurse. Tell them "unexplained excessive night sweats that are soaking my sheets". Request routine blood tests and insist they are taken.

VickyEadieofThigh · 26/11/2025 08:45

All the above, but have you considered sleeping naked? If you're too hot in bed, you don't need clothes, surely?

You absolutely should see your GP.

Could be any number of reasons, no-one here will be able to diagnose which it is!

My bet is premature menopause. It can occur at your age.

Massively massively unlikely!!!

Please see your GP though to discount anything serious.

I'm sure it won't be, but I had lymphoma and this is one of the side effects. Worth going to a GP just to check.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 26/11/2025 08:48

I had this occasionally in my 20s. I was terrified I was going into early menopause. I didn't go to a doctor because I was stupid back then. It did stop and I put it down to eating too much sugar, drinking too much caffeine and general work stress.

If I were you, I'd go to the GP to rule out anything major.

Have you been taking ibuprofen for something? That can cause night sweats. Otherwise I would get your thyroid levels checked.

smallsilvercloud · 26/11/2025 08:58

Dont wear pjs to bed, they aren’t helping

borntobequiet · 26/11/2025 09:06

My daughter had this from her teens, but no one took it seriously. She also had mood swings and other psychological issues, so it was considered a mental health problem. When she, aged 30, eventually saw someone sufficiently expert who actually listened to her as well as running tests, it was found that her oestrogen levels were those of a menopausal woman.
HRT fixed her immediately.

TheTigerWhoWentToTea · 26/11/2025 18:38

Oh gosh, the thought of somethiny like early menopause is terrifying! although I recently had hormone blood tests and they were all normal, I’m assuming my thyroid was checked as part of this but I’ll need to check that.

I know a few people said about not wearing pjs and switching off the heating completely- honestly I’ve tried that and it makes zero difference, other than I go to bed absolutely freezing but I still wake up dripping in sweat and basically glued to my bed with his sweaty I am.

I really don’t think it’s anxiety but I guess I could be wrong- I’m not an anxious person, I’m not worried about anything atm, I love my job and I’m happy with my life right now and I’m not going through any changes or stresses at all. It’s weird. I don’t drink caffeine/alcohol/smoking either. It’s just bizarre.

Happened again 2x last night and by the 2nd time it looked like my hair was just washed because it was basically soaking wet with sweat. I’ll try and get a drs appt for it

Afraid I had this from my 21st birthday every month before my period, nothing seemed to make a difference. Hopefully you can get some answers.

PurpleSkies2026 · 26/11/2025 20:09

It may be a virus. I've just had the cold going round and was swimming in sweat last night.

PurpleSkies2026 · 26/11/2025 20:10

Has anything changed in your diet recently?

Blarn · 26/11/2025 20:15

I always get sweaty in the night a couple of days before my period but the only time this happened to me (apart from those horrible post partum sweats!) was when I was extremely stressed. Went on for months. But definitely make a GP appt.

Do you have any unexplained itching, weight loss, often have a slightly raised temperature? Any little niggles, make sure you mention them to the GP so they get a whole picture.

ScaredOfFlying · 26/11/2025 21:00

You’re not paying attention OP. Early menopause would be the least of your worries. Night sweats can be a symptom of cancer. Go to the GP asap.

NigelForage · 26/11/2025 21:01

I had this when I had glandular fever. Age thirty bloody seven!!

That’s what my GP thought too when I first started experiencing horrendous night sweats in my mid 20s and, as a result of their scepticism, it took a little while to diagnose as they didn’t take my symptoms seriously.

It turned out to be early menopause or premature ovarian insufficiency, as it’s now called. Apparently, 1 in 1000 women experience it before the age of 30 so, whilst it’s pretty uncommon, it does happen.

Ask your GP to check your FSH AND your estrodial levels, not just one or the other. And make sure your blood is drawn on day 2-3 of your cycle, if you’re still having periods. If it is early menopause, your hormone levels may be bouncing around all over the place and the condition can be missed if you don’t follow this protocol for the blood tests.

Check out the Daisy Network for more info.

I hope very much there’s another, kinder explanation but I do think it’s worth checking out this condition, from what you say.

SmalltownCEO · 26/11/2025 21:35

Hormone, sugar or cancer are the most typical reasons I’ve found amongst friends. In that order.
If going low carb doesn’t help after 6 weeks it’s not sugar.

Tiberius12 · 26/11/2025 22:07

You definitely need to see a GP. Soaking night sweats were one of my signs that I had lymphoma.
