I have left controlling partner of 10 years and moved into my own place. We need to sell the house so my money is still tied up. He has been controlling and emotionally abusive for years. He also has treated the dog badly and refuses to let me have her. He used a slip lead and will discipline her with this. He will pin her to the ground if she does something wrong and 2 weeks ago was trying to kick her as she had misbehaved. I can't stop worrying about the dog as he has no patience and worried he will take his anger out on her more now that I am gone. I am considering taking the dog next weekend when he isn't home but I know he will be fuming if I do this. AIBU? If I knew she was being treated well I wouldn't be considering it

Who is registred as owner?

TheatricalLife · 24/11/2025 15:23

I would because I'd find it absolutely unbearable to leave an animal to be abused. Is the dog registered as yours?

SeaAndStars · 24/11/2025 15:35

I would take it.

Dartmoorcheffy · 24/11/2025 15:37

Just take the dog. Poor thing.

amber763 · 24/11/2025 15:39

Who is registered on the dogs chip? Id want to take her too for sure.

WallaceinAnderland · 24/11/2025 15:45

If she's yours, yes take her.

pinkstripeycat · 24/11/2025 15:47

If the dog is yours take her. If she isn’t call the RSPCA.

Whereismyfleeceblanket · 24/11/2025 15:49

My dd took her dp's ddog. Took her to the vet. Reregistered her to her name without issue. We had her until she was 15. Never heard a peep from her ex..
Imo tell him the ddog got out and was killed on the road....

CatBooksWineInThatOrder · 24/11/2025 15:54

If the dog is registered to you, yes - take her. If not, report him.

honeylulu · 24/11/2025 15:55

I would take the dog. He can fume all he likes. Though if her chip is registered to him he might be able to force a return. I suspect he's keeping the dog because it distresses you, rather than because he actually wants her.

Whereismyfleeceblanket · 24/11/2025 16:00

Let him try take you to court if he wishes. Keep details of how he treats her. Utter twat.

Starlight1984 · 24/11/2025 16:20

Go and get her.

Negroniqueen0 · 24/11/2025 16:47

Definitely take her

JLou08 · 24/11/2025 16:52

When did you leave? You need to be careful, abuse can escalate when you leave the relationship.

Cadenza12 · 24/11/2025 16:53

Just get the dog. I can't believe you need to ask.

Catsolitude · 24/11/2025 17:07

Just take the dog. Who cares if he’s fuming? If you leave the dog, you know you’re worried about it being mistreated and it’s another way to exert control over you. You’re not going to get arrested for taking your own dog.

Doggielovecharlotte · 24/11/2025 17:07

Yes go and get the dog

Nycbucketlist · 24/11/2025 17:39

A week ago, I'm hoping not to have to see him again

Why didn't you take her when you moved out?

Id Just go and get her, provided its your name on the chips!

Have you reported your abuse? Id be inclined to request assistance to get the dog and report him for animal abuse.

TrippingOverMyAssets · 24/11/2025 17:45

Who is the owner?

Ddakji · 24/11/2025 17:45

Do you have a friend or family member (male, if possible) who can accompany you to collect the dog?

And do you have evidence of his mistreatment of the dog!

Has there been any harassment or attempts to get you back? Was there ever any violence? If the answer to any is yes, I wouldn't risk going to get the dog yet.

WallaceinAnderland · 24/11/2025 17:48

You can't take the dog if you are the owner though.

StruggleFlourish · 24/11/2025 17:59

If your name is on any veterinary bills, as owner, or if you are registered in some other way as owner in some way that legally he can't come back to you and claim that you stole the dog...

You might want to quickly call The humane society and ask them, just give them this very brief summary that you just said to us, and they can probably give you the best advice...

If they say that you have as much claim to the dog as he does that I would say take it. For God sakes. Don't leave her there. If you can. Of course that will not stop him from getting another dog and be abusive to it unfortunately. But if you can save this life, I would say do it. But, don't if legally he'll be able to come after you unfortunately.

You are so strong for leaving. You must have been so stressed and I'm sure even now as much as you feel relieved that you're still stressed. Hugs to you
