23 month ate dry chia seeds

My 23 month old (2 next month) was given some chia seeds with yoghurt. They were dry and not soaked. Had a small tea spoon of the yoghurt and dry chia seeds.

I'm not so very worried about choking. They had them at 6.30ish and had a bath, had water in the bath etc.

Aibu?

He tried to drink bath water as they do but I made sure he had normal tap water.

I think the hype about the risk from dry chia seeds is a bit of a social media storm. I used to give my kids yoghurt with chia sprinkled on for years - we called it ‘magic sprinkles’ - and never did them any harm. I’d imagine it needs to be quite large quantities to be risky.

SuperMix · 22/11/2025 23:46

What’s the issue? He’s not eaten a massive amount of unsoaked chia seeds it’s not ideal but he won’t be hurt by it

Inthewindandrain · 22/11/2025 23:46

That's fine, you are over thinking it

EmeraldSloth · 22/11/2025 23:47

What are you worried about @noisypipework?

Springflowersyay · 22/11/2025 23:47

They will be fine. Any choking would be immediately noticeable.

The guy who died ate spoons and spoons of them very quickly.

Thank you. I've really developed a taste for them and they help me poop. I'm just overly worried about choking but I guess it would have happened by now. Stomach acid would expand them?

I think the risk of choking to a 23 month old, from a normal amount chia seeds mixed into yogurt, would be tiny. And it would only be a risk while they were eating it.

I used to sprinkle a few dry chia seeds on DC’s food when she was a similar age as packed full of nutrients. Maybe guidance has changed since then but they will be fine..

Seawolves · 22/11/2025 23:58

Choking would've taken place almost immediately surely?

Maybe they can get stuck in throat? Than the water i gave him made them swell

Thanks. Yes they say to soak them but they are vile soaked

I’m sure everything is fine, OP. It’s just some chia seeds, people eat them all the time with no ill effects.

noisypipework · 23/11/2025 17:39

Well he survived and my anxiety didn't

That’s great to hear! The anxiety can be so loud at times, can’t it?

OrangeKettle · 23/11/2025 18:12

I didn’t know they were meant to be soaked. I add them to overnight oat yogurt!

Just before serving or overnight

Well you learn something new every day, I didnt know you were supposed to soak them.... going to go check the packet now. I sprinkle them on salads, yogurt, pasta....

Overnight. I just stick them on top of the yogurt!

Friendlyfart · 24/11/2025 07:20

I think they can potentially be irritating to the gut if not soaked.

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/11/2025 07:41

I put chia seeds on overnight oats. Just sprinkled on top of the yoghurt. I don't think they require soaking.

My less than 2 year old ate washing powder and raw green peppers and loads of things I've probably forgotten. Nothing bad happened and she's an adult with teenagers of her own now.

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/11/2025 07:49

My packet of Aldi chia seeds tells you to Sprinkle on your yoghurt. Blend into your smoothies. Mix into your cereal or porridge. It says nothing about soaking them beforehand.

What's wrong with raw green peppers? We eat them all the time? And put chia seeds ons yoghurt most mornings.
Im amazed Im alive 😬

Nothing although I would have washed it first. It's just part of a list of random things 2 years olds try eating obviously the washing powder was more problematic and the OP had given the child the Chia seeds. My post also said I eat unsoaked Chia seeds on ,my overnight oats every day.

The OP is hugely overreacting.

Perhaps you can be more careful

So you soak them overnight.... They aren't raw.... They've already expanded
