What are these black dots / marks on my daughter’s hands

Any doctors reading who might be able to put my mind at rest about these black marks / dots that have appeared on my 13 year old daughter’s hands over the past few days? We have a GP appointment (Bupa video call) booked tomorrow but I’m worried that she maybe needs to be seen more urgently? Anyone ever seen anything like this before? Thanks so much

Blood blisters?

Okiedokie123 · 23/11/2025 18:28

I think it’s a reaction to silver nitrate. I’ll be interested in what the gp/nurse says. Hoping it’s all fine op. xx

TwinklyNight · 23/11/2025 20:17

Looks like ink to me. Oops never mind, I just saw the mystery has been solved!

Oh wow - I think this might be it! I just asked her and she said she did a silver nitrate experiment in biology the lesson before her English lesson, when she noticed the first black marks! Thank you so much! It seems too much of a coincidence not to be that! 🤩

I’m really surprised the risk assessment for handling of this solution did not state to wear disposable polyvinyl gloves. Maybe it was an extremely weak solution.
The dots will wear off within a week.

The black stain left by AgNO3 on the skin is due to the reduction of silver ions (Ag+) to elemental silver (Ag), which appears black because of its microscopic particle size.

Newsenmum · 23/11/2025 21:46

How is it now? Have you seen a dr? Does she have any other symptoms?

Icannoteven · 23/11/2025 22:00

I don’t mean to scare you but a few days ago I came across something like this on google that was caused by Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome- a genetic syndrome that causes spots like this on the hands, feet and mouth and also causes intestinal polyps.

I would definitely visit a Dr. Even if its not PJS it could be spots of blood under the skin or something.

Obviously I’m not a health professional and I don’t mean to scare you but this is unusual and I wouldn’t just assume it was nothing.

Endorewitch · 23/11/2025 23:21

Sadly I think2 you need to be patient and wait for a GP to have a look. I notice a doctor hasnt responded and Dr Google can cause undue worries.
I am sure it is nothing. A fee years ago my face and hands turned a vivid yellow!!I scrubbed it off but it gradually returned after a couple of hours. This kepy happening!I was convinced i had some deathky disease. The doctor told me it was the pollen from a particular type of lily. I had this lily in the garden and had been gardening. So scary. Am sure it will be something simple or a type of allergy.

Silver nitrate is also used to burn overgrowth of cells. I had a hangnail that healed by constantly repairing itself. The nurse put silver nitrate on it and it grew out over a few weeks.

My first thoughts too - having a 5 yr old obssessed with pens I think I should know! I had to use cartridge pens at my school and my hands were constantly covered with ink but this looks more like biro or felt tip!
Can you try scrubbing her hands thoroughly first though (with a nail brush perhap?) to save wasting money and a Drs time?

Mcoco · 24/11/2025 08:07

Warts?

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 24/11/2025 09:30

OP's DD has said she's had silver nitrate spilt on her hands.

pollymere · 24/11/2025 12:51

I haven't rtwt yet because I find that sometimes the rollerball pens cause this just before they start leaking. And it doesn't wash off. It happens in English class because it's one of the few lessons where writing using a pen still happens in some schools.

I'm hoping that was the reason...

Wouldn't AgNO3 dots all appear immediately after being splattered? That's inconsistent with what OP says here:
"Yes - it’s spread from a few dots on one hand to both hands over the past couple of days"

They don't all appear straightaway or together. They develop over time at different rates depending on how much solution there was.

PigeonsandSquirrels · 24/11/2025 13:53

Just looks like pen ink - wipe it with nail polish remover

The black dots appear over time depending on exposure to light.

Yes, should have specified due to light as well. I always think I've gotten away with out getting any on me and then over the next few days realise not 😫.
