What are these black dots / marks on my daughter’s hands

Any doctors reading who might be able to put my mind at rest about these black marks / dots that have appeared on my 13 year old daughter’s hands over the past few days? We have a GP appointment (Bupa video call) booked tomorrow but I’m worried that she maybe needs to be seen more urgently? Anyone ever seen anything like this before? Thanks so much

Thanks for your reply - I just googled that and can’t find much about their bites - do you know about them? Are they serious? Thanks again

Google images suggests a sea urchin sting, is that possible?

Thanks so much for your reply and checking it on google images - I’ve been googling for hours and hadn’t found that - it does look similar, but it started in her English class on Thursday so I don’t think it can be that!! It’s not painful or itchy or anything. Thanks again for replying and trying to help 😊

Is it on both hands?

Is it on both hands?

Yes - it’s spread from a few dots on one hand to both hands over the past couple of days

Are you absolutely sure it couldn’t be pen?

Nearly50omg · 22/11/2025 20:30

It’s clearly ink!

oneoneone · 22/11/2025 20:31

Are they raised at all? Or completely flat?

Leaky biro was the cause of all my black hand dots!!

Well that was my first thought so I ignored them for a few days assuming that’s what they were, but no amount of washing / rubbing / gel makes any difference and they’re spreading

Has she been in the garden? On grass?

I’m kind of yo-yo-ing between thinking they’re some kind of indelible ink that she’s touching without realising or spiralling into thinking it’s some kind of terrible disease and she could be at deaths door! The pharmacist said to go to a&e but I thought that seemed a bit dramatic, especially with the carnage on a Saturday night! I’d be mortified if they said it was just pen 🫣

Burns of some sort from a chemical?

No, I don’t think so, unless she went on the field at school

Sometimes scabies can present as black dots.

A few years ago, a young teacher at my school caught it from her fiancé, a teacher at another school. He taught a practical subject and had caught it showing pupils how to use equipment.

In our school, we finished up disinfecting all the equipment in the affected teacher's department. She stayed off work for a few days while she treated herself with ointment from her GP.

Thankfully, they got it cleared up before the wedding.

Yes, I wondered if she’d messed up a chemistry experiment! But she says not!

Some appear to be well defined and others are smudged?
it's very odd.

WearyAuldWumman · 22/11/2025 20:43

I've just enlarged your image, OP. Some of the dots look quite red? That could quite well be scabies. It can spread like wildfire in a school.

Notsurewhatisnormalanymore · 22/11/2025 20:44

Are they definitely black and not very dark red?

It would be very itchy though.

Smugzebra · 22/11/2025 20:45

Cydnidae Pigmentation does look like that to be fair..
Google says it can be wiped with nail varnish remover?

Oh gosh, that sounds stressful for them, I’m glad it got sorted in time. Would it be itchy though?
