I didn't want to read and run

GuyForksAndKnives · 21/11/2025 16:29

This is as irrelevant as "just saying". Go ahead, read and "run" (or more correctly read and then switch to something else) because ... the OP and the rest of us would not even be aware. It sounds like virtue signalling to me. I wish people would stop saying it.

OP posts:
DaphneDahlia · 21/11/2025 16:31

Ok

WiggyWiggyImGettingJiggy · 21/11/2025 16:31

I usually take it to mean that they sympathise with the op, don't have any helpful advice, but are bumping the thread so others can help.

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/11/2025 16:33

Read it and now running from this thread 😆

They could say that then!

OP posts:
IAmKerplunk · 21/11/2025 16:34

I think it’s an acknowledgment that the thread has been read even if nothing to add.

Far better than the posters who simply put a full stop to place mark which is awful on sensitive threads and unnecessary.

wintericestorm · 21/11/2025 16:36

I agree op. I just think what an idiot every time I see it, as it is totally meaningless.

WiggyWiggyImGettingJiggy · 21/11/2025 16:36

GuyForksAndKnives · 21/11/2025 16:34

They could say that then!

You want a thread full of "bump" or "." on a sensitive topic?

IAmKerplunk · 21/11/2025 16:37

GuyForksAndKnives · 21/11/2025 16:34

They could say that then!

Yeah they should but they normally expand on the ‘didn’t want to read and run’ and offer sympathy if required or best wishes. I don’t think I have ever seen a post that simply says ‘didn’t want to read and run’ and nothing else

This - I don't do it often but will occasionally click on a thread where the op is in desperate need of advice but not had any responses and I can't help. I hope it makes them feel listened to and/or bump the thread for others to help.

ETA I don't just write that and bugger off, I do offer my sympathies or whatever as well!

Absolutely. It's another way of saying 'I want to acknowledge your plight but I haven't got anything useful to add'.

I'm not a fan of virtue signalling but I don't think this phrase counts as that.

pictoosh · 21/11/2025 16:39

GuyForksAndKnives · 21/11/2025 16:34

They could say that then!

People won't always express things as you would.

PrincessFluffyPants · 21/11/2025 16:42

YABU.
Surely it's a form of bumping the thread? Acknowledging that you are aware it's important to the OP, a chance to offer commiserations if appropriate even if you can't help and to stop it being lost and never answered.

IvedoneitagainhaventI · 21/11/2025 16:55

I fail to see why this annoys you.

I actually admire posters who do this: they are offering sympathy to an often distressed OP and showing that someone has listened to them.
And also ot course it has the practical effect of bumping the thread

To me it's actually one of the positives on MN and an antidote to some of the unpleasantness.

This. Of all the things that are said on MN I can’t see how ‘read and run’ is that bad

ScrambledEggs12 · 21/11/2025 17:01

I haven't used it on Mumsnet but have possibly said on Facebook, usually when I don't have time to fully respond, but intend to come back later.

Mamabear0202 · 21/11/2025 17:05

I disagree. I posted something this morning about starting my chemo today and just wanted some chit chat whilst I’ve been in hospital. If people say that; it’s fine to me, it just makes me feel like it’s someone else checking in. It sounds ridiculous since I don’t know any of these people but the solidarity has made me feel slightly better.

Just because it doesn’t work for you, it might work for someone else, more than you think.

BauhausOfEliott · 21/11/2025 17:06

GuyForksAndKnives · 21/11/2025 16:34

They could say that then!

They usually do say that as well as saying 'Didn't want to read and run', though.

I've never seen someone say 'Didn't want to read and run' and then nothing else.

It's usually something like 'I don't have any practical advice I'm afraid but didn't want to read and run - I'm so sorry you're going through this and I'm sending you all my best wishes, hopefully someone who knows about [whatever the topic is] will be along to the thread soon, hang in there'. Seems fair enough to me.

Butchyrestingface · 21/11/2025 17:09

Yeah, I don't see a problem with the phrase. I've never seen it anyone use it in a "I don't want to read and run, but you're a total cunt and I hope your harvest fails" sort of way. It's invariably always used to express sympathy with an OP or situation which the poster acknowledges is way beyond their pay grade to answer.

The '.' responses on the other hand are horrible.

Okiedokie123 · 21/11/2025 17:10

Are you ok? I didn’t want to read your thread and run…….

Stillpoor · 21/11/2025 17:18

GuyForksAndKnives · 21/11/2025 16:34

They could say that then!

I did just that years back.

I typed- i have no advice op but just bummping it for you hope someone will pop on soon that has experience with this.

The op relied with- dont bother typing shit then if you dont have any advice.

I never did it again that thread got took down because the op was so rude and snappy to everyone on there.

ohyesido · 21/11/2025 17:26

I think it’s a kind acknowledgment of the post so the OP isn’t left with no replies

It's a way of bumping the thread and also making the OP feel that at least someone, somewhere has read her post. Especially if she's poured her heart out. I hate virtue signalling but I this really isn't it.

HellsBellsAndCatsWhiskers · 21/11/2025 17:28

It's simply someone being kind
