I didn't want to read and run

GuyForksAndKnives · 21/11/2025 16:29

This is as irrelevant as "just saying". Go ahead, read and "run" (or more correctly read and then switch to something else) because ... the OP and the rest of us would not even be aware. It sounds like virtue signalling to me. I wish people would stop saying it.

Spot on. If someone is struggling, then that little reach out can help.

Livingthebestlife · 21/11/2025 17:31

I hate it, it reads to me, my life is busy and I must dash off to my more exciting life.

If they want to bump a thread, write bump or something short because they always end up posting a novel.

PatThePenguin · 21/11/2025 17:31

YANBU, I've never understood it OP.

It gives the impression they're saying the OP is lucky they could take time out of their busy day, to impart their wisdom.

Just post or don't, it's all the same.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 21/11/2025 17:33

You’re telling the OP they’ve been seen. That you aren’t someone who can help, but they aren’t alone.

It’s shorthand for, ‘I wish I could say or do something useful, but it’s not an area I know anything about. I hope someone comes along soon who can offer something that will address your concerns. I’m sorry you are in this position, and hope my comment encourages someone else to comment.’.

There’s nothing sadder than a thread no one has responded to, and an OP in distress.

gamerchick · 21/11/2025 17:35

It's to bump the thread up. A lot of threads go unanswered OP. Just one can get it on people's radar.

So someone has poured their heart out but had no replies - are you really just going to write ‘bump’ or leave them unanswered?

GuyForksAndKnives · 21/11/2025 16:34

They could say that then!

I would have thought it was quite a known shorthand?

I've only ever seen it on a post with no replies where the OP is clearly in a bad place or desperate. I've never seen anyone just write "didn't want to read and run". They always go on to say that hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along soon, but sending love - or something along those lines. If I was reaching out for help, I'd like to think that someone was at least acknowledging my existence as a human being.

What I don't understand is why the person who is replying with didn't want to read and run...then posts a huge reply , why not just post the reply without the whole didn't want to read and run?

Is rare someone just writes didn't want to read and run.

If the thread is unanswered they can write bumping the thread for you, no experience etc

Ah ok - I haven’t seen a ‘didn’t want to read and run’ followed by a long post nor have I seen any ‘didn’t want to read and run’ with nothing else added. I haven’t seen only seen that expression followed by empathy or good wishes.

Ahh, I've seen plenty with "I didn't want to read and run but have you tried XYZ"?

Even weirder when a couple of other replies have suggested the same thing but without the 'reading and running'.

ContinuewithGoogle · 21/11/2025 17:49

I see the logic, they feel a completely empty thread and no reply could be upsetting. It's a common sentence, they're not trying to be original, just acknowledging the OP.

When other threads have 100s of replies, it's quite a nice thing to do.

That's exactly what I meant earlier but you've put it more eloquently.

The huge reply really sounds as thought they're saying the OP is lucky they took the time out.

ThreeSixtyTwo · 21/11/2025 17:58

I can understand it in the specific situation when there are no replies yet.

If it is after page 1, it feels weird, similarly to people writing "place marking" instead of hitting the follow button.

Somethingtosayagain · 21/11/2025 18:01

I find it a bit self-regarding.

But I know it is meant well, and largely used mimetically at this point by people who wish they could help the OP.

Motnight · 21/11/2025 18:30

Bloody hell, the casual sexism, racism, misogyny on Mumsnet and this is the phrase you feel strongly enough about to start a thread on, Op 😂

We all see things differently. Thanks but I have no examples of racism or sexism today.

They could say that then!

Its implied by 'I didn't want to read and run' but IDWTRAR is shorter and generally understood. By most, at least.

Didimum · 21/11/2025 19:02

I don’t take it that way at all. I take it to mean that they either don’t have either time or knowledge to reply adequately but that they want to offer a supportive word to someone struggling regardless.

You sound overly cynical.

GuyForksAndKnives · 21/11/2025 19:07

I'm sorry to hear/see that. I can't offer you any advice but I'm sure others will and I wish you all the best.

I reported a completely innocuous OP earlier today because it was at the very top of Active yet was 4 hours old and hadn't had a single reply.

MN response was that they sometimes do this to encourage people to reply to a post that hasn't had any engagement therefore it is not, by definition, active

I sort of get where they are coming from, but as there is already an option to view unanswered threads, it seems a bit of an illogical approach.

You reported it? What on earth for?

Now many people use the unanswered threads button? I don't. Maybe the Mumsnet warriors who are wanting to police posters could take that job on...

But this is just as useless as ‘I didn’t want to read and run. Hope someone more knowledgeable comes along soon’ or words to that effect. They both amount to the same thing. Neither is of any use whatsoever to the OP other than bumping their thread. They’re just platitudes. Harmless and well intentioned, but essentially meaningless.

Hankunamatata · 22/11/2025 09:45

pictoosh · 21/11/2025 16:38

Absolutely. It's another way of saying 'I want to acknowledge your plight but I haven't got anything useful to add'.

I'm not a fan of virtue signalling but I don't think this phrase counts as that.

This
Its called empathy

PaulineMush · 22/11/2025 10:20

You reported it? What on earth for?

@gamerchick because I wanted a response from MN about why a four hour old post with absolutely no replies was showing as the top post on my active feed.

Nothing to do with the actual post, I just didn't think that that was how "Active" worked.
