Have you had them done or any experiences with them?

I need a few implants so I am looking at 'all on 4' or similar

My local dentist said 3k per implant! Which is a lot

I have heard so many turkey horror stories so I am unsure about going there

Would love to hear experiences and advice if possible please

Regular mn user but name changed as embarrassed about teeth 🥺🙈

Tia x

Edit, I am london based x

I had one fitted with a bone graft- they used pig bone. It was expensive- I think 3k but I have had it 12 years now and people still comment on how nice my teeth are

Allseeingallknowing · 21/11/2025 19:03

Pig bone, cow bone-what if you’re vegan?

IcedPurple · 21/11/2025 19:09

I had two implants done two decades ago. Cost bout £2k each. I've never had the slightest problem with them and struggle to tell them apart from my natural teeth. I'm currently in the process of getting a 3rd implant fitted. Also about £2k.

I did go to Budapest for a consulation with a very well known dental clinic there. The consulation was free, as was the overnight hotel and transfer to the clinic. All I had to pay was the £70 for the return Ryanair flight. A very slick and professional operation, but factoring in travel costs and having to take time off work, I worked out that it was just as cheap to get my teeth done at home. I have loads of issues with my teeth, not just the implants, so it would have required several trips to Hungary. So far, so good with my 3rd implant.

ThreshAcre · 21/11/2025 19:23

@Allseeingallknowing , synthetic bone granules.

Hi OP, I’m a dentist that places implants and I’m happy to answer questions.

I use straumann implants which is one of the best systems according to scientific literature so I wouldn’t be guided by price. Implants done poorly can lead to complications and dealing with them is much trickier than getting it right in the first place, especially if you can see it and need the gums to look good and natural

LuLuRN · 21/11/2025 19:34

I have 2 dental implants done in Scotland. I would absolutely not go abroad for this type of stuff.
I spent 10 grand in total on my teeth, that included an extraction, 3 crowns, 2 root canals, various fillings plus 2 implants & bone grafting for them.
I have had no issues, no pain at all really, i was at a concert the day after implants going in.
My implants were not for aesthetic reasons, purely functional & to improve the quality of my life which is exactly what they have done.
Saving up for round 2 now. :)

Wasn’t there a long wait after putting the implants in before putting the crown on ?

No, it was all done in one day. He has done it twice now at two different dentists, the second one the dentist was really lovely and DH was there all day. But even the dentist said that doung it this way is "brutal". I think after DH experience i would defininately use the same dentist but im unsure if id do it all in a day and i defininately would not go abroad after speaking to the dentist and seeing how tough a surgery it could be

The only other option is human cadaver or a mix of all 3. I

Edited

Ah I stand corrected by @ThreshAcre I wasn't aware of that option when I had my implants 25 and 10 years ago.

deuxgarcons · 22/11/2025 11:04

I have 'all on 6'. Done 5 years ago. 11k. Life changing for me. Pm if you want more info

ThreshAcre · 22/11/2025 11:07

@CherryRipe1 , a quick search would have told you.

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/11/2025 11:09

I have one (replaced a failed root canal). It cost £3.5k in London this year. It is great works and looks like a real tooth. Go for the best quality care you can afford, it is invasive and precise surgery. Mine took five months from extraction to finish, with a lot of checks along the way to ensure everything was healing amd bonding well.

It is not pleasant but perfectly tolerable.

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/11/2025 11:11

Mine possibly took a little longer as the reason the root canal failed was it got infected (bloody covid restrictions on hygienist appointments), so it took a bit of time to ensure that the infection had completely cleared.

ThreshAcre · 22/11/2025 11:14

@Ginmonkeyagain , they take months anyway. The implant needs to have embedded before the post and crown are fitted.

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/11/2025 11:16

Yeah I had to wait three months between the post and crown fitting.

ThreshAcre · 22/11/2025 11:19

I'm ready for posts now, but they can wait until my finances improve. Smile

AngelsWithSilverWings · 22/11/2025 12:42

Had one done in April. Cost £3500 and was very straight forward and painless. I had my broken tooth removed by my normal NHS dentist the October before ( that was by far the most painful part of the whole process as I got an infection and dry socket)

I think the post went in February and the implant fitted end of April. I was offered sedation when the post went in but it was going to cost £300 more so I decided to be brave. It was fine so I made the right decision.

ThreshAcre · 22/11/2025 12:48

I had some done under sedation, but it's not necessary. If you have sedation, you need to have someone with you, and to be around afterwards as you'll be a bit groggy.

The most recent ones, I had 2 implants put in, walked home, back to WFH, carried on with my day.

FWIW, I have a high pain threshold (have had teeth removed without local anaesthetic), which is why I said it does hurt, but it's discomfort more than pain, and your jaw will be sore from being open a long time.
(Tooth extraction without LA is very painful)

anon2022anon · 22/11/2025 12:55

What do they do for the 3 month wait if it's your front teeth?

How did you get them done on the NHS? Was it following trauma, or a medical condition?

Lulumush · 22/11/2025 13:38

@Allseeingallknowing hypodontia unfortunately!
