To piss on the saddle

Cantdothingsanymore · 20/11/2025 22:12

NC as it' embarrassing.

I love horses and horse riding, haven't done it for years.
I decided it was time for a hobby for me now the youngest is 7 and booked an adult riding lesson. I was so happy about it.
However, I could not control my bladder, it's been incredibly weak since childbirth. I had an episiotomy (7 years ago).
I literally pissed on the saddle during a rising trot. It was running down my leg. I had no control at all over my bladder, not one bit. Its weak day to day but never just completely loose and uncontrollable.
I was so embarrassed, I could have cried and ran off there and then if I wasnt on a horse going round the sand school in front of 6 other people.
I had to go back to the yard and clean the saddle with my tears and go home in my wet trousers.
Now I can't ever go back.
Is this normal, do I need medical attention, what can I do? Any help and advice appreciated. I was so happy to be on a horse again. Can I never ride again??
I am so sad about it.
I am 7 years post bloody partem.
So upset that I can never ride again.

YABU: you can ride, you need help (operation maybe?, advice please)
YANBU: YOU CAN'T RIDE AGAIN, theres nothing you can do.

have you tried pelvic floor exercises?
I’d probably start there.

my youngest is 8, and I used to struggle when running until quite recently. I have found that the more I exercise, the better it got.

groundhoglet · 20/11/2025 22:15

I am so sorry this happened to you. Please see a pelvic floor physiotherapist, they can help.

TheChosenTwo · 20/11/2025 22:16

I’ve voted YABU not that there’s anything remotely unreasonable about your post. I’m so sorry this happened to you but there will be something that can be done so you can ride again.

Bluemin · 20/11/2025 22:17

Yes go and see a women's health physio. In the meantime do pelvic floor exercises

Seems a bit dramatic to say that you cleaned the saddle with your tears though!!

Arlanymor · 20/11/2025 22:18

I would definitely see your GP so that they can recommend the different courses of action that you can take. But don't let it hold you back - get hold of some protective absorbent underwear (ideally washable - better for the environment) -and literally get back on the horse. You are not the first person this has happened to and won't be the last - hold your head up high - if this hobby gives you joy then you just need to find a way to manage it that lets you carry on.

amiadickhead · 20/11/2025 22:18

You need to see a pelvic floor physio, too many women suffer with this as if it's normal and it's not, there's just woeful women's health care in this country. I'm sorry you were embarrassed but you can get help.

apremoiledeluge · 20/11/2025 22:18

Sorry that happened, I know you're upset but it's the sort of thing that's happened to lots of women. It doesn't mean you can't ride again but perhaps there's measures you can take to make it less likely in future. The riding place would probably be less judgemental than you might think.
Did anyone say anything about it?

ExitPursuedByABare · 20/11/2025 22:18

Oh I’m so sorry this happened to you. I’d definitely seek medical advice. But don’t give up riding.

FuzzyWolf · 20/11/2025 22:18

I’m so sorry this has happened to you.

Please see a women’s health physio and probably accept you will need to go privately. It’s likely to involve a lot of exercises but they will be able to check and help you.

Landlubber2019 · 20/11/2025 22:20

Download the squeezy app on your phone, i found exercise [pilates and yoga] helps massively and i follow the female physio on Facebook. Lots of risks accompany the surgery so I have to manage this myself every single day....

Go and book yourself in with a physio that is a specialist in pelvic health and they will have the knowledge to be able to help you with this. It is fixable and not something you need to live with. Go onto local Facebook groups and see if anyone has been recommended someone or review the credentials of local physios in the area. Sometimes they’re called “mummy MOT’s”.

GlasgowGal2014 · 20/11/2025 22:27

This is common but not normal and it can be fixed! First step is to see a good women's health physiotherapist. I wouldn't bother with your GP or an NHS physio because in my experience they were hopeless and just suggested kegels, which can actually make things worse. You should be able to find a good women's health physio in your area via www.mummymot.com. There are also lots of online exercise programmes that can help like Pelvic Floor Perfect by Sarah Duvall and POP Fitness and POPUp by Haley Shevener. These can be useful to help rebuild your pelvic floor strength, but definitely worth seeing a good physio in person first.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 20/11/2025 22:28

Oh you poor thing. Look up gussie grips on Twitter.

Bluemin · 20/11/2025 22:31

Do you have any period pants? Just wear them or a sanitary towel/tena lady next time. Its extremely common and nothing to be ashamed about.

Of course you can ride again, and you are not the only person to have embarrassing experiences doing sports. It is well-known that marathon runners of both sexes have diarrhea while running and regularly pee themselves. It just isn't remarked upon. Any sport where you are banging your torso about can cause the same, and don't get me started on swimmers!
Take the advice posted here, forget the embarrassment and go for it!
Btw, I started horse riding at the age of 45, never got beyond a walk and canter (never learnt the rising trot) but I loved it. Riding on Dorset heathlands, up and down ridges- I so wish I had learnt to ride as a youngster!

Offloadontome · 20/11/2025 22:36

See your GP and ask to be referred to a continence tram, or a women's health physio. They should check if anything medical needs to happen. If the wait is ages, go see a private womens health physiotherapist and get appropriately assessed, they will give you proper exercise advice, examine you etc. you can start doing pelvic floor exercises straight away, but they will be able to guide you to do them properly and the right amount.
It's not normal to pee yourself, but it's common.
I can't jump up and down without dribbling and my youngest is 4. I'm sure horse riding is similar! You can also check out MUTU, expensive but evidence based NHS approved programme for things like this.

But definitely see your GP first to rule out anything else and to refer you to the right people!

Franjipanl8r · 20/11/2025 22:43

Get a little mini trampoline and do some bouncing exercises and also wear period pants riding.

Mrstawnyowl · 20/11/2025 22:51

Not trying to be facetious but could it have happened with a sitting trot? I wonder if the posting motion would have caused the incident.

Hillyhillyholly · 20/11/2025 22:53

If like me, you’ve tried the exercises etc., and seen no improvements, then get a referral. You can’t live like that. I’ve had surgery to put my bladder back where it belongs and it’s life changing. I was told by the physio that my pelvic floor wasn’t actually bad and that exercises were never going to help.

ThatNaiceMember · 20/11/2025 22:53

Definitely see a physio, I did this year. Paid privately, seriously best thing I ever did. I don't have half the issues I did now thanks to that goddess of a woman!
