2 mile walk to secondary school too far?

I'm not sure how long it would take, 40, 45 mins?

I could give lifts where possible on WFH days, but that wouldn't be every day.

There's a bus, but only one an hour and not sure how reliable it would be. But could be an option for super rainy days?

Funny, in my experience it's the exact opposite. I carried loads of books and folders - my kids never carried any. Thinking of this thread I actually asked my Y9 son what he carries in his bag as it was practically empty - when it's not PE day, he just has his lunch and water bottle in there. School provide ingredients for food tech, although he's doing textiles this term. He keeps a couple of pens in his blazer pocket. He's just conceded that it's too cold to not wear a coat

I grew up in a village, where we used to ride bikes for five miles to and from the catchment secondary school in the nearby town during the 90s. No issues at all.

I understand that nowadays children don’t learn to walk or ride bikes for more than two miles.

Recently, there was a thread where a mother asked how detrimental it is for children to grow up in rural areas, and a large number of people piled on, claiming that children can’t survive living rurally, with one reason being that walking or riding bikes is supposedly harmful.
