Do all cats bring you “gifts”

Friend is finding a home for her neighbour’s (who has died) cat. I like animals but my only hesitation is coming across a half eaten rodent in my home. It is a huge fear of mine. Do all cats do this?

There is another family who can take the cat (already have one) but my friend is offering him to us first. DD (10) has been wanting a cat for ages but we’ve just never got around to it

Must say I could do without the half a mouse found in the kitchen early one morning, with its minute kidneys hanging out.
Fortunately such events were rare.

Siriusmuggle · 19/11/2025 13:20

Mine never does. We don't have a cat flap so he can't bring anything in. Anything he catches (rarely) he knows he has to eat it before he's allowed home.

RaraRachael · 19/11/2025 13:34

My cat did when he was younger and more agile - mice, shrews, half dead birds etc

Now he's a lazy 18yo who hardly goes out and I'm very relieved I will no longer be receiving "gifts" 😃

mondaytosunday · 19/11/2025 13:37

No. I have two Maine Coons and they don’t hunt. Though I had two mogies and it was like coming home to a scene from Texas Chainsaw Massacre some nights!

Toddlerteaplease · 19/11/2025 13:38

My Persians don’t. Thank goodness!

My girl cat does, but the boys don't.

I have no idea if that's relevant and if others have the same thing.

Really! We've got two 'new' cats - brothers. There have been a couple of small birds and a couple of shrews (they are very squeaky and don't get eaten probably don't taste nice). What was, recently dragged through the cat flap (think leopard dragging its kill up a tree) was a fully grown pigeon. Much of it had been eaten, some saved for later. Was intrigues me is how a cat can forensically separate out the gall bladder!

VikaOlson · 19/11/2025 13:50

Mine doesn't bring 'gifts', she either eats things whole and vomits them up, eats parts of things and leaves the bits she doesn't like (heads/tails/internal organs) lying around, or she brings in live mice and lets them go.

CatsRuleMyLife · 19/11/2025 14:22

Of ours, one used to bring in all sorts of presents, one brings in thd odd bird, one never hunts and one goes off doing his own thing and I've never seen him catch anything. It's impossible to say without knowing what the cat does currently really.

I'd rather have the half eaten, dead gifts than live, fluttering ones though.

Happypotter77 · 19/11/2025 14:23

It's a bit of a lottery if you get a hunter or not.
One of ours was a devil and his speciality was bringing live mice into the house for play dates. The other two were big softies and would run into the house and hide behind the sofa if they met any "prey". Couldn't catch a fly between them.

My dad's bought fish skin lol and people's washing

That's crazy! Funny though!

cadburyegg · 19/11/2025 14:29

My (female) cats bring gifts but they don’t bring them in the house. They get left on the path outside. My mum’s (also female) cat brings her daily gifts, with the entrails often displayed all through the house.

Beamur · 19/11/2025 14:30

Not all cats bring gifts.
One of my 4 hunts. The others don't.
If cat is a hunter, keep in at night and boost diet with protein - might help.

Lamonstera · 19/11/2025 14:34

Mine is a female. She tried but can’t catch anything more exciting than an earthworm.

Catwoman8 · 19/11/2025 14:36

I have 2, both young adult males which we got from the local rescue.

One has no interest whatsover in hunting live animals, but he loves to chase a peice of string or a ball.

The other is a killing machine tabby, and brings us all sorts. He was found on the streets before we rescued him, so that probably plays a big part of his hunting tendancies. Recently he brought back a frog and then had no idea what to do with it!

Panda89 · 19/11/2025 14:38

I have 3 female cats and 2 of them are hunters so I think it really depends on the cat and their age.

First cat is 6, she hunts and eats her spoils, so sometimes we have blood patches or a random tail on the floor. She never brings her catches to us.

The other is now 10 and outgrew her hunting at around 5. She used to bring us presents, birds, mice and slowworms but nothing now, she is too lazy!

Third cat is also 6 and has never caught anything.

Reggiebo · 19/11/2025 14:42

Yes...rats, baby rabbits, half eaten birds and sometimes live voles which it releases in the house😳. Dog then hunts them. It's ridiculous.

AltitudeCheck · 19/11/2025 14:44

It really depends on the cat plus how much easy prey there is where you live and how bored they get. Our cats were prolific when they were younger and we were out at work all day, but are both older and lazier now and, as I wfh, they'd rather stay in with the heating on! They really only pop out for the loo these days!

afaloren · 19/11/2025 14:46

Is it a boy or a girl? Boys (neutered) grow out of if in my experience. Girls are wilder I think.

EffinMagicFairy · 19/11/2025 14:47

We had 2 cats, one did and the other didn’t, the one that did brought home the occasional mouse, numerous frogs, that were always alive and Koi carp, we always knew when he’d been fishing as would come in with wet front legs. We don’t have a pond and live in a residential area. We never found out who the Koi belonged to as we didn’t ask around.

AlltheHedgehogsontheWall · 19/11/2025 14:50

My parents cat did this but never brought them inside and just left them lined up on the doorstep.

Our cat (elderly stray who moved in) has never and I very much doubt he could be bothered either to catch or carry anything. My daughter tried to interest him in a mechanical hamster recently, he briefly lifted his head up and watched it scoot across the floor, then went straight back to sleep.

Clementine183 · 19/11/2025 14:51

My cat has literally never brought a gift home as he is the worst hunter ever. Sometimes he sits looking longingly at the wood pigeons but then just lumbers towards them uselessly. Sometimes, we drop a piece of chicken on the floor for him and have to point at it repeatedly for about two minutes before he clocks what is going on and makes his way over, so I'm not unduly worried about him becoming a killing machine any time soon.

My last cat looked as if he'd be a great hunter, very big and powerful, but he was also inept. He used to stalk birds quite well, but as soon as he got anywhere close he would start miaowing loudly and then look confused when they all flew off. He never seemed to make the connection, which I was happy about as cleaning up disembowelled prey is not my idea of fun.

AltitudeCheck · 19/11/2025 14:52

My cat has in the past brought home half a bag of frozen chips and a zip lock bag of cheese and pickle sandwiches (not on the same hunting trip).... I suspect he does most of his 'hunting' in the neighbours kitchens!

ImthatBoleyngirl · 19/11/2025 14:53

Mine doesn't luckily

The excitement was obviously too much for him! 😂

IsntItDarkOut · 19/11/2025 14:55

I had one who would catch baby mice and there was 2 birds (I suspect they were already injured), another who caught a few mice early on and a bird once but gre out of it.
Our newest cat is young, super fit and desperate. Unfortunately he doesn’t know he’s a black cat and the birds can see him. Caught nothing.
