To think Gordon Ramsay is… well, just vulgar?

I’ve always found Gordon Ramsay’s whole persona pretty vulgar - the shouting, the theatrics, the constant swearing. It all feels so over the top. Clearly it’s worked for his career but it’s never sat right with me.

Then today I came across mention of an old public indecency charge and went to Google because I honestly thought it must be nonsense. I didn’t expect to find anything but it led me down a whole rabbit hole of rumours and stories that are… grim, to say the least.

AIBU to think his “brand” has always leaned heavily on vulgarity and that the more you read, the worse it looks?

No, I think that's how chefs were in his day. Its how every restaurant kitchen I have been in operated, screaming, swearing, constant threats and insults. Have you seen the documentary series Boiling Point with Marco Pierre White?
DB is a chef and he has a quiet kitchen, he opened it to the restaurant specifically to create a calm harmonious work environment because he respects his staff.

Gordon leaned in to what created him and it has done very well for him. Also my step father whose from the US says British people swearing is hilarious to Amercians because we sound so posh and silly.

Thebellistolling · 18/11/2025 20:48

I don't know enough about him. People live, make mistakes and do all kinds of things.

I think we need to try to live and let live. He obviously had some redeeming qualities, he's a husband, a father and a boss. Having said that, I do pity him for having his family in the public eye, it's a lot of pressure.

I do think you are being unreasonable, simply because you are not just any of the roles or attributes in your life and nor is he.

I don't know what you are talking about and I doubt I will google it to find out.

So yes, YABU.

TheCheekySloth · 18/11/2025 21:15

He`s just a man a cleb like any other .
We have a choice to like people or not.
If you dont like people dont give them any thought or energy.

VGuys · 18/11/2025 21:17

I don't know anything about public indecency or anything else you found out following that but his vulgar persona on TV is just a character. On the English and kids versions he was nowhere near as bad as he is on American TV.

LeavesTrees · 18/11/2025 21:25

Let’s not try and cancel another celebrity, I hate the modern day witch hunt mentality. He’s not an abuser that we know of. He’s just a sweary man who has made some mistakes. All of his children seem to adore him so he must be doing something right!

Holdonforsummer · 18/11/2025 21:27

Are you from Adam Peaty’s family?!

I would bet money that you’ve hit the nail on the head! 😂

Jellycatspyjamas · 18/11/2025 21:55

I have friends who’ve worked with him on different projects and who speaks very highly of him - describe him as respectful and professional. He has a staff team who have worked with him for a very long time. I doubt that would be the case if he were vulgar.

Ha your step father can’t have heard a Scot swear 😂

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 18/11/2025 22:27

My other half has met him a couple of times socially and she says he was much quieter and less sweary than his TV persona. And very polite and nice.

Rexinasaurus · 18/11/2025 22:40

🤷‍♀️ I’m sure he doesn’t care what you or anybody else thinks. He’s extremely successful and wealthy, has a lovely big family. From a very wc background as well.

TeaAndTattoos · 18/11/2025 23:19

The shouting and swearing is just for tv that’s not what he’s like really, if you watch the stuff that he did with Fred and Gino that’s what he’s really like. I find the way he acts on tv really funny but that’s probably because I know that’s just for tv that’s not the real him but the insults he can come up with on the spot are top notch.

From what I’ve read, he’s completely different off screen and other chefs speak of the support that he’s given them.

Timeforabitofpeace · 19/11/2025 05:57

Vulgarity is not a crime. I don’t approve of any workplace where people are insulted or yelled at. There are far more effective ways to develop skills.

Wingingit73 · 19/11/2025 06:00

If you dont like him stop reading! I assume the guy we see on tv 'is' just a persona.
I think his staff hold him in high regard and work for him for ages.
Also. Seems like a decent dad

jan2310 · 19/11/2025 06:05

I’ve met Gordon Ramsay a couple of times. He was charming and polite and very different to the person he portrays in his tv programmes.

Usernamenotfound1 · 19/11/2025 06:08

Never worked in a kitchen have you? Ok it’s bit dramatised but pretty much every kitchen/restaurant I worked in, albeit 20 years ago so of Gordon’s era, was like this.

i know people who actually do work for him and say he’s lovely. Some are into sport and he supports them with that.

Justlostmybagel · 19/11/2025 06:13

I like him. But then I'm not too bothered by things that are "vulgar".

KellsBells7 · 19/11/2025 06:25

I find him very attractive!

Would an American know if a Scot was swearing? They seem to be incapable of understanding them, if social media is anything to go by.

Don’t believe everything you read or
seen on social media 😂.

Bikergran · 19/11/2025 08:32

Honestly, some of the shitheaps they send him to, I'd swear. People running a restaurant with filthy kitchens and premises, cupboards and fridges filled with rotting food, they need shouting at. Personally I think they need prosecuting.

Westfacing · 19/11/2025 08:40

I'm not a big fan but did borrow a line from him when working 12.5 hour nursing shifts... at around 14.00 when we were already knackered and frazzled with still six hours to go, I'd mutter

Round fucking two! 😂
