To think Gordon Ramsay is… well, just vulgar?

I’ve always found Gordon Ramsay’s whole persona pretty vulgar - the shouting, the theatrics, the constant swearing. It all feels so over the top. Clearly it’s worked for his career but it’s never sat right with me.

Then today I came across mention of an old public indecency charge and went to Google because I honestly thought it must be nonsense. I didn’t expect to find anything but it led me down a whole rabbit hole of rumours and stories that are… grim, to say the least.

AIBU to think his “brand” has always leaned heavily on vulgarity and that the more you read, the worse it looks?

No, i really like him. Read his autobiography Humble Pie and you will get a better idea of who he is.

FuelledByRageAndHaribo · 19/11/2025 08:57

I’m from a very WC background and know how difficult it is to try and get out of the poverty trap. If someone becomes successful and extremely wealthy despite not having the best start in life, then I’m pleased for them, even if they might at times be a little vulgar.

RoseDog · 19/11/2025 08:59

Dd has crossed paths it’s him a few times at her work, he’s been nothing but polite and respectful, she was slightly terrified the first time she knew he was coming as she is a chef and only knew him from his tv shows!

She has a list of Celebs who come across lovely on tv but are less than lovely in real life!

TeaAndTattoos · 18/11/2025 23:19

The shouting and swearing is just for tv that’s not what he’s like really, if you watch the stuff that he did with Fred and Gino that’s what he’s really like. I find the way he acts on tv really funny but that’s probably because I know that’s just for tv that’s not the real him but the insults he can come up with on the spot are top notch.

THIS - I think anyone who thinks his tv persona is exactly what he's like in real life is extremely naive. He clearly plays it up for the camera and much is scripted that way to attract viewers and for the programme to seem dramatic. The fact that every single episode of kitchen nightmares has the exact same drama arc makes this blindingly obvious.

I am not saying he doesnt ever curse in real life btw, I am sure he does, but if he was that vile to work with, er, noone would work with him and lots of people like working with him and speak very highly of him.

AutumnLeavesFallingFast · 19/11/2025 09:09

Not quite going how you thought it would??

susiedaisy1912 · 19/11/2025 09:16

I always thought the shouty sweary thing was heavily exaggerated for tv and it worked at the time, his career took off. Don’t think it would go down so well now if he came on the scene and was the same. I’ve no idea what he is like in real life.

ConnieHeart · 19/11/2025 09:18

I Googled the public indecency story as I'd never heard of it and it was 32 years ago, him & his mates larking about drunk apparently. No charges were made

I've always liked him, he seems like a good, genuine husband & father

ConnieHeart · 19/11/2025 09:20

KellsBells7 · 19/11/2025 06:25

I find him very attractive!

Me too. Have for about 20 years! There's something quite lovely about a man who is passionate about his job but also a great husband & father

Me three. I find him very attractive and to be genuinely lovely

Let’s not try and cancel another celebrity, I hate the modern day witch hunt mentality. He’s not an abuser that we know of. He’s just a sweary man who has made some mistakes. All of his children seem to adore him so he must be doing something right!

100%
I met him once he was charming

Are you from Adam Peaty’s family?!

👀👀👀

Uricon2 · 19/11/2025 09:40

I've always like him, including the OTT persona that is very clearly an act. Even on Kitchen Nightmares, there are times when he is most kind to people who actually want his help, I remember one older couple in the US who had a failing restaurant and he was lovely with them.

Interesting too that at a time when there are so many stories about the predatory behaviour of celebs, there don't seem to be any about Mr Sweary, but lots of positive comments about working with and for him.

AngeloMysterioso · 19/11/2025 09:44

I listened to the Dish podcast episode he was in the other day and was surprised at how fondly Angela Hartnett spoke of him. Sounds like he’s a great boss. They were really genuinely warm with each other during the interview too.

RuncibleSpoons · 19/11/2025 09:57

Angela Hartnett clearly likes him a lot, and she worked for him for years.

I don’t have a problem with him, he seems like a decent chap.

JHound · 19/11/2025 09:59

As somebody who used to be a waitress - I find his aggressiveness and swearing fairly normal for chefs I worked with. It may have changed now but in the 90s / early thousands they almost all like Ramsay

Pietchi · 19/11/2025 10:28

My daughter met him and he was very courteous.

TheHouseElf · 19/11/2025 10:50

Having met Gordon Ramsay at a work event, all I can say is that he was charming, friendly and very polite. I judge as I find.

Daisymay8 · 19/11/2025 10:58

He came to fame in 1999 in a tv series - I would expect attitudes have changed A LOT since then over 26 years

jackbenimblejackbequick · 19/11/2025 11:00

Does anyone remember when he made that Radio 2 programme talking us all through Christmas Day cooking? He was so lovely and gentle throughout 🤣

LeBaiserDuDragon · 19/11/2025 11:20

No, I really like him, I think he's lovely and funny. Met him once at the charity event and...nothing bad to say whatsoever. He was polite and friendly.

As for that indecency charge, jesus, so what? He hasn't hurt/molested anybody. Early morning, a few guys drunk out of their minds, messing around in the toilets. No one died.

I know pretty much everyone is a saint on MN and it's 'a timblefull of sherry for Xmas' kind of place, but I've done worse than him in my partying days.

FunMustard · 19/11/2025 11:36

"He's not a criminal"
"Let's not try and cancel another celebrity"

People are allowed an opinion. OP said neither of those things.

I think he's a pig. I don't like his chef "persona" (have only really seen short clips of that) but his behaviour towards Sofia Vergara on some chat show was revolting.

And no, he probably doesn't care what I think about him. I don't care what he thinks about me either <shrug>

You can be both a great father and a man that isn't that nice. My Dad was the best father to us, we wanted for nothing, he spent a lot of time with us, we knew we were loved and adored but others would have called him a hard man, a bad bastard, and he was both of those. As a boss he was a hard taskmaster but his staff stayed for years and seemed to adore him. As a husband he certainly wasn't faithful( as children we didn't know that) my mum stayed because she loved him and had a great lifestyle with incredible clothes, stunning jewellery and wonderful holidays, it was her choice to stay.
So yes, i think you can be a great father but an awful man.

Dearg · 19/11/2025 12:49

I met him, and Angela Hartnett at a restaurant opening ( years ago) He was at the height of his fame, but was very polite, almost quiet, and did not get riled at all, even when our Glaswegian guest tried to wind him up about his humble past.

pawsatively · 19/11/2025 12:55

Oh, how disappointing. The Op didn’t bother to return.

springintoaction2 · 19/11/2025 12:55

Thebellistolling · 18/11/2025 20:48

I don't know enough about him. People live, make mistakes and do all kinds of things.

I think we need to try to live and let live. He obviously had some redeeming qualities, he's a husband, a father and a boss. Having said that, I do pity him for having his family in the public eye, it's a lot of pressure.

I do think you are being unreasonable, simply because you are not just any of the roles or attributes in your life and nor is he.

I don't know what you are talking about and I doubt I will google it to find out.

So yes, YABU.

Yeah sure - such a great family guy having an affair for however many years.
