To be disappointed that boiling an egg in the air fryer didn’t work

I’d read great things about boiling eggs in the air fryer but I’ve just tried it.

Good - the time and temperature recommended resulted in a perfect jammy yolk as promised.

Bad - lost half the whites because the shells appeared superglued on 🤨

Next up, Mumsnet laments how hard it is to make a cup of tea in the air fryer.

So so sad 😢
Can’t even make a tiramisu in an airfryer ffs.

We use an egg steamer thing that holds 6 eggs (or less). Bought it on Amazon ages ago. B0CGB9J8ZB

A very small amount of water goes in. That amount boils away, steaming the eggs. More water = longer boil time. Timer beeps and cuts the power.

Once you get the hang of the timing to your preference, it’s brilliant. I use hard boiled eggs for various purposes, and the added bonus is you can actually peel the shells off beautifully. I always had trouble with conventional boiling.

You were disappointed? Of all the things I've read here this is surely the most irreverent

And yet you were invested enough to comment.

It does work! I was surprised how well they came out!

Even easier - spend £10 on a boiled-egg maker. Put the eggs in the machine with the required small amount of water and 5 minutes or so later they're boiled. Far easier, far more economic than heating a pan of water and no danger of the water boiling over.

I'm fussy about boiled eggs in that I only like them hard boiled and made into egg mayonnaise or very soft boiled in that the yolk is still liquid and the white is as solid as possible but this is something I find hard to achieve (too many variables in egg size and freshness, starting temperature of egg and water, control of water temperature).

I tried the electric egg maker method when one was part of the provided cooking facilities on a boating holiday and it seemed to me to be the most reliable way of cooking an egg the way I like it.

The egg boiler thing seemed very crappy and plasticky and there is a sense of it being a pointless gadget compared with a pan, but it did seem to do a good job.

There's a four in a bed episode ,where Father and daughter have been critical of other breakfasts.
They have all the egg gadgets and it's a complete disaster.
All eggs are off the Father announces.
It's very funny episode just for that.

“Jammy yolk”?

LancashireButterPie · 18/11/2025 07:54

Surely the easiest method is just put the eggs into boiling water in a le creuset pan. Clamp a lid on, turn heat off and wait 5 mins. The pan is cast iron and retains heat.
Saves energy, perfectly cooked eggs. Completely reliable.

A fire hazard?

To cook something in an air fryer?

Why?

(OP, Ive seen this done I think theres some bloke on youtube called Barry who does airfryer things and he did it and others have done it, theres a way to mitigate the superglued shell issue but I cant remember what it is)

There's actually a great way to mitigate the super glue shell thing! Boiling them in water like a normal person, the way we have been doing effectively for thousands of bloody years.

Mydogsmellslikewee · 18/11/2025 08:02

My husband is obsessed with air fryers and pressure cookers and is always fiddling with trying to do shit like this with all sorts of things. There’s lots of failure, handwringing, moaning and watching YouTube tutorials.

Meanwhile, I just boil a pan of water, put the oven on and get on with my life.

We love our boiled egg maker!
Change amount of water to get the level of doneness you want, and it comes with little cups to do poached instead (not tried myself as we hate that).

caramac04 · 18/11/2025 08:14

Ooh no please don’t tempt me to buy an electric egg boiler thingy. I am such a sucker for kitchen gadgets #missespointofthread
I pressure cook eggs for egg mayo sandwiches and find plunging in cold water afterwards for a few minutes makes peeling the shells easy. Roll the egg on the worktop first. Not great if you want a warm dippy egg and soldiers though.
On a side note, baked beans heated in a pan on the hob seem so much nicer than heated in the microwave in a glass jug. I do the latter as said jug fits better in the dishwasher.
I use my ninjas daily and love them but it does mean more washing up every night.

Blimey, has Barry Scott moved on from Cilit Bang to eggs? 😮

dontmalbeconme · 18/11/2025 08:28

I always struggled to get reliable results with a pan of water or with the egg boiler. Too many variables. The air fryer gives me the best, most reliable results I've ever had-I think its because the small drawer eliminates the enviromnmental variables better than a pan of the egg boiler.

I love jammy yolked boiled eggs!

Obviously, I didnt buy an airfryer just to make boiled eggs. Its an appliance I have, and I find that its the most reliable way for me to cook a perfect egg. Other people prefer other methods, and that's OK too.

Sounds amazing, I only eat the yolk anyway!!

Me too! I have never met another person who does this. (I’m sadly quite excited by this now!) The whites make me sick. What’s your reason?

Putting it in a air fryer isn't boiling them. You need a pan of water for that 🙄

Send your whites to me. I can’t eat the yolk unless it's completely runny so always leave quite a bit of it and tbh can take or leave it so would happily trade.
