Do you read before bed?

I’ve never really been into reading at night - the thought of trying to focus when I’m already tired has always put me off. But I’ve just bought a new sleep candle and now I’m wondering if reading before bed might actually be a nice way to wind down? Light the candle, have a little read, let it do its thing… seems quite cosy in theory.

AIBU to think I might finally become a bedtime reader or does everyone else do this already?

Yes, it’s a wind down. But I’ve always done it - I can remember my parents exhorting me to put my book down and go to sleep!

millymollymoomoo · 15/11/2025 22:36

Yes. Every night. I use a kindle. I’ve read every night in bed for decades. Love it

Brightbluesomething · 15/11/2025 22:37

Yes, I try to get an hour in before sleep to counter blue light from my phone. It helps me sleep. Downside is I have a ridiculous number of books at home. But I love reading so it’s not a chore.

ShodAndShadySenators · 15/11/2025 22:37

Yes, I have a book (or dozen) by my bed specifically for reading in bed. It gets me nice and sleepy (unlike browsing phones etc).

Currently getting through Mansfield Park...

NotMeNoNo · 15/11/2025 22:38

I read in bed until my kindle falls out of my hand, basically. I read a lot of non fiction/history so I'm not kept awake by a gripping plot.

Ihaveoflate · 15/11/2025 22:39

Yes, DH and I both read in bed at night and always have books on the go. I never read at any other time except on holiday.

GarlicBreadStan · 15/11/2025 22:39

I normally don't, but I've finally charged my Kindle after months of not using it, and I've delved into the first book of a series that my partner bought me for Valentine's Day. I've nearly finished reading it, and I only started reading it about 3 hours ago!

Keroppi · 15/11/2025 22:40

Yes, sometimes just a page or two so I don't get tempted to mindlessly scroll on my phone until my eyes start to sting or close in their own.

This is so cute

Yep and then thunk I drop it sometimes. It's very relaxing.

What is a sleep candle? Sounds dangerous for me as I often fall asleep reading… 😂

It’s a Land of Nod candle by Gruum!

What's a sleep candle? Not an actual candle (fire hazard if the intention is to fall asleep) surely?

I don't read in bed because I share a bed with DH, but I read on and off throughout any day spent at home, between other activities, whilst waiting for the kids to finish appointments or activities, on public transport etc. Often I read in the evening before bed too, but not actually in bed - I haven't done that since I had a bed to myself decades ago...

MillicentMaybe · 15/11/2025 22:52

Every night, and on Sundays I bring my Kindle downstairs, as if I bring it down on other days, nothing gets done. I read 100+ books a year.

themerchentofvenus · 15/11/2025 22:55

Always.

I'm about to throw my phone so it's out of reach and read for a bit.

It's a fab way to unwind and I sleep so much better.

SunnyDolly · 15/11/2025 22:55

Every night, I go to bed earlier and earlier when it’s a book I’m really in to!

Also confused by sleep candle though, sounds like a big fire risk?! I frequently pass out mid chapter

Strangesally20 · 15/11/2025 22:56

Every single night. I’m not sure If ive ever fallen asleep without my kindle in my hand in the past 10 years. My poor 2 year old (stilllllll co sleeping) sleeps half the night with a kindle on his head as it usually falls out my hand and ends up with us in the bed!

rainbowsparkle28 · 15/11/2025 22:58

I try to as much as possible! The only slight downside (but also perk I guess) is I usually will read for 5 minutes and then be too tired and want to sleep 😂

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 15/11/2025 22:59

Every night, even if it’s only for ten minutes. I definitely sleep better. If I skip it, it’s harder to fall asleep!

BauhausOfEliott · 15/11/2025 22:59

I’ve always read in bed. I read for a while and then when I lie down I listen to an audiobook.

I skip the reading to have sex but that’s about the only thing that stops me reading.

I read loads anyway though, at any spare time of day. If I’ve got time to spare I’m reading, basically.

Arpegios · 15/11/2025 23:01

My phone has totally fucked my sleeping, but I've literally just realised if I read a book I'm sleepy after about 30 mins - it's so much better for your sleep!

CioCio · 15/11/2025 23:07

Absolutely. I take a bath every night before bed and read in the bath, then read myself to sleep. Like a pp, I’ve been doing so since I could read. I could no more fall asleep without reading, even if exhausted, than I could fly.

GagMeWithASpoon · 15/11/2025 23:15

Every night. It quiets down my brain , makes me sleepy (despite reading on my phone) and gives me a theme for the story I play in my head before I fall asleep.

FleaDog · 15/11/2025 23:19

Every night. I love reading, it's my winding down time, tucked up on bed so no one should be bothering me unless it's necessary!
I used to read to dc each night and think it's a great way to switch off.

I try and have a stack of library books by my bed to work through which cheers me up no end!
