Do you read before bed?

I’ve never really been into reading at night - the thought of trying to focus when I’m already tired has always put me off. But I’ve just bought a new sleep candle and now I’m wondering if reading before bed might actually be a nice way to wind down? Light the candle, have a little read, let it do its thing… seems quite cosy in theory.

AIBU to think I might finally become a bedtime reader or does everyone else do this already?

Yes, it’s a wind down. But I’ve always done it - I can remember my parents exhorting me to put my book down and go to sleep!

Yes. Every night. I use a kindle. I’ve read every night in bed for decades. Love it

Yes, I try to get an hour in before sleep to counter blue light from my phone. It helps me sleep. Downside is I have a ridiculous number of books at home. But I love reading so it’s not a chore.

Yes, I have a book (or dozen) by my bed specifically for reading in bed. It gets me nice and sleepy (unlike browsing phones etc).

Currently getting through Mansfield Park...

I read in bed until my kindle falls out of my hand, basically. I read a lot of non fiction/history so I'm not kept awake by a gripping plot.

Yes, DH and I both read in bed at night and always have books on the go. I never read at any other time except on holiday.

I normally don't, but I've finally charged my Kindle after months of not using it, and I've delved into the first book of a series that my partner bought me for Valentine's Day. I've nearly finished reading it, and I only started reading it about 3 hours ago!

Yes, sometimes just a page or two so I don't get tempted to mindlessly scroll on my phone until my eyes start to sting or close in their own.

Yep and then thunk I drop it sometimes. It's very relaxing.

What's a sleep candle? Not an actual candle (fire hazard if the intention is to fall asleep) surely?

I don't read in bed because I share a bed with DH, but I read on and off throughout any day spent at home, between other activities, whilst waiting for the kids to finish appointments or activities, on public transport etc. Often I read in the evening before bed too, but not actually in bed - I haven't done that since I had a bed to myself decades ago...

Every night, and on Sundays I bring my Kindle downstairs, as if I bring it down on other days, nothing gets done. I read 100+ books a year.

I'm about to throw my phone so it's out of reach and read for a bit.

It's a fab way to unwind and I sleep so much better.

Every night, I go to bed earlier and earlier when it’s a book I’m really in to!

Also confused by sleep candle though, sounds like a big fire risk?! I frequently pass out mid chapter

Every single night. I’m not sure If ive ever fallen asleep without my kindle in my hand in the past 10 years. My poor 2 year old (stilllllll co sleeping) sleeps half the night with a kindle on his head as it usually falls out my hand and ends up with us in the bed!

I try to as much as possible! The only slight downside (but also perk I guess) is I usually will read for 5 minutes and then be too tired and want to sleep 😂

Every night, even if it’s only for ten minutes. I definitely sleep better. If I skip it, it’s harder to fall asleep!

I’ve always read in bed. I read for a while and then when I lie down I listen to an audiobook.

I skip the reading to have sex but that’s about the only thing that stops me reading.

I read loads anyway though, at any spare time of day. If I’ve got time to spare I’m reading, basically.

My phone has totally fucked my sleeping, but I've literally just realised if I read a book I'm sleepy after about 30 mins - it's so much better for your sleep!

Absolutely. I take a bath every night before bed and read in the bath, then read myself to sleep. Like a pp, I’ve been doing so since I could read. I could no more fall asleep without reading, even if exhausted, than I could fly.

Every night. It quiets down my brain , makes me sleepy (despite reading on my phone) and gives me a theme for the story I play in my head before I fall asleep.

Every night. I love reading, it's my winding down time, tucked up on bed so no one should be bothering me unless it's necessary!
I used to read to dc each night and think it's a great way to switch off.

I try and have a stack of library books by my bed to work through which cheers me up no end!
