Do you read before bed?

I’ve never really been into reading at night - the thought of trying to focus when I’m already tired has always put me off. But I’ve just bought a new sleep candle and now I’m wondering if reading before bed might actually be a nice way to wind down? Light the candle, have a little read, let it do its thing… seems quite cosy in theory.

AIBU to think I might finally become a bedtime reader or does everyone else do this already?

This!

Me too

I suspect a sleep candle would be gone in one night for me since I fall asleep reading and it wouldn’t get blown out. However I would not have a naked flame in the bedroom so unlikely to be a problem.

Ohpleeeease · 16/11/2025 10:51

Not any more because my eyesight isn’t good in dim light. I’m a bit worried about your sleep candle OP, is it safe?

A Kindle? It’s self-lighting and you can make the font as big as you like.

OttersMayHaveShifted · 16/11/2025 10:54

Always, but because I enjoy reading, not as an aid to relaxation or to help me go to sleep or because I feel I should. If you don't enjoy it, there's not much point!

zingally · 16/11/2025 11:43

Most nights, yes. But not every night.

I read on my Kindle and it's usually just a chapter.

Ddakji · 16/11/2025 11:45

Always, without exception.

@CioCio good suggestion, I do have a Kindle and the light is helpful but it’s more that when my eyes are tired they don’t focus as well, no matter how big I make the font. Also I’m a very quick reader so I’d be flipping the page every couple of seconds.

Also (I’m hard to please!) my arms get cold when I’m reading in bed.

Yes, I have a book (or dozen) by my bed specifically for reading in bed. It gets me nice and sleepy (unlike browsing phones etc).

Currently getting through Mansfield Park...

I’m slowly working my way through Mansfield Park.. it’s taking me ages to finish but is doing the job of making me sleepy before bed!

Auburngal · 16/11/2025 15:13

I cannot read in bed. I find the angles all wrong and can't get comfy. I should be reading my Kindle more. I'm aiming to read at least half an hour before bed a few nights a week, now I am working.

It's hardly fiction. GCSE English killed my love for books from studying them rather than for pleasure. Still 28 years after GCSEs, I probably read about 7 books and more in audiobooks. The latter was when I had eye surgeries and couldn't tolerate bright lights.

LakieLady · 16/11/2025 15:21

Always, and have done ever since I could read. I start to get anxious when I'm down to my last unread book.

I had a Kindle, but I didn't really get on with it. It just didn't feel the same as an actual paper book, and I gave it to a friend.

writingsonthewall · 16/11/2025 17:24

Yes every night. I usually only manage 15 mins or so as I start dropping off

calmag · 16/11/2025 17:25

I've always read before bed and sleep much better when I do. Its just a very calming activity and lets your body and brain wind down before sleep in a way that it doesn't get if you watch tv or scroll.

Blackcountryexile · 16/11/2025 17:35

I've read in bed before I go to sleep for as long as I can remember. Sometimes DH has to find my book in the duvet and turn off my bedside lamp.
The only time I didn't was when I had newborns and couldn't stay awake,

BotterMon · 16/11/2025 17:41

Every night without fail. Used to read under the covers with a torch as a kid.
We leave our phones downstairs at night and don't have a TV in any of the bedrooms so it's books/Kindles. I am an avid reader and would read back of cereal packets just to have something to read.

NeverCouldGetTheHangOfThursdays · 16/11/2025 17:51

I've read a book in bed since I was a child. I would always hope that someone gave me a book token for my birthday.

Reading in bed helps to switch my brain off and I'll read until I start nodding off. It can take me weeks to finish a book because I sometimes only manage one or two pages at a time 😂

luckylavender · 16/11/2025 18:04

Always. When I was young I was always getting into trouble for reading with a torch under the duvet

Natsku · 16/11/2025 18:10

Yup, every night. It helps me fall asleep, plus its the only quiet time I get to focus on my book.

I read in bed until my kindle falls out of my hand, basically. I read a lot of non fiction/history so I'm not kept awake by a gripping plot.

Same here . If you have any good ones recently please share!!

DataColour · 16/11/2025 18:19

Every night. I can't get to sleep properly without reading. I might have to invest in a Kindle as DH finishes reading earlier and wants me to turn my bedside light off. I sometimes wait till he falls asleep (within minutes) and turns the light back on again .

QueenClinomania · 16/11/2025 18:20

I listen to an audio book. Very relaxing

Tryingatleast · 16/11/2025 18:21

I like to pace and read or sit and read but I read at nighttime because two pages and I’m asleep!!!

hippospot · 16/11/2025 18:27

I literally can't fall asleep without reading!
