Dh moaning at me for taking paracetomal

Cherrybomb101 · 15/11/2025 14:02

I suffer with bad headaches/possible migraines. To be very clear, I get regular eye tests, I’m not concerned. I’m not dehydrated. My headaches seem to be hormonal and always come around the time before my totm. I can’t just suffer the headaches because they get very bad and make me feel nauseous.

I might take probably 6-10 paracetamol spread over 2-3 days during a time when I’m having headache's which would be once a month or less.

Dh keeps saying that I’m adducted to painkillers, he’s worried how many tablets I’m taking, I shouldn’t be taking them, saying “oh my god “ comments if I buy a box of paracetamol in the supermarket shop, making stupid comments asking if I need tablets even when I haven’t said I’ve got a headache or anything.

Dh also refuses to take paracetamol himself even if he’s in pain or has a fever.

Aibu to think he is being ridiculous?

Why does he even need to know that you are taking anything? Are you by each other’s side 24/7.

JohnTheRevelator · 15/11/2025 16:57

Omg what is it with some people and simple painkillers like paracetamol?! I had an exBF who was like this. I have rheumatoid and osteoarthritis quite badly and as I can't take NSAIDs, paracetamol is my usual choice. But he'd be on my back the second I took any, which was usually 2,twice a day,on about 4 or 5 days a week. Anyone would have thought I was snorting a line of cocaine the way he went on about it!

PigletJohn · 15/11/2025 17:02

I use paracetamol with caffeine. If you take them frequently you can build up a tolerance to the caffeine and get a rebound headache from "withdrawal" when you stop.

Anyone who avoids pain killers and anti-inflamms clearly have the privilege of not having a chronic pain condition.

Doesn't stop them coming with the judgments, unfortunately.

WhamBamThankU · 15/11/2025 17:05

I’ve been prescribed daily cocodamol for about 8 years, send him my way 🙃

ThatWorthyAquaFox · 15/11/2025 17:08

If you've got a migraine paracetamol won't help. You need to try something like sumatriptan.

You aren't taking too much. You can have up to 8 a day.

Noshadelamp · 15/11/2025 17:10

If it is migraine and you don't manage them properly with actual migraine medication, you can end up with needing a lot more than a few paracetamol. How on earth will he react then?
Regardless of why your taking paracetamol, he needs to accept that you are in pain and need medication and stop being so controlling and uncaring.

@Cherrybomb101 , I'm on team DH. Paracetamol has side effects, and taking painkillers can be addictive, even if the drug itself isn't addictive.

Edited

Even if paracetamol was additive (it's not), no one will have any issues taking it for a few days every month, nor will they have side effects

Hankunamatata · 15/11/2025 17:16

He is being ridiculous

Aspirin may help more useful if you can take it. 3 x 300mg at first sign migriane

Climbingrosexx · 15/11/2025 17:20

It hardly sounds like there is any drug abuse going on here. The way I see it life is too short to spend it in pain if you don't have to.

Whatsthatsheila · 15/11/2025 17:21

Hardly surprising you get migraines listening to that douchebag. Tell him to stfu cos he’s making it worse

Millytante · 15/11/2025 17:22

Knowsley · 15/11/2025 14:58

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat , addiction to non-addictive painkillers does happen.

Nowhere near as often as addiction to beer and fags though, so we must hope DH is a non-smoker teetotaller.

rwalker · 15/11/2025 17:28

What’s he like himself about painkillers

this sounds very familiar about a woman I used to work with .wouldn’t take painkillers then spend the whole shift complaining about pain . As soon as you took a single paracetamol that was it you’d fucked your liver

I will 100% make a GP appointment to see about getting some more suitable medication after this thread. I should have done it ages ago.

Your husband is a dick.

However there are much better options out there for you than paracetamol, which is notoriously shite for hormonal headaches or migraines.

Whilst you await a GP, I'd ditch the paracetamol and switch to aspirin. 3 x 300mg aspirin tablets at the first moment you notice the head pain starting.

See here for aspirin: https://cks.nice.org.uk/topics/analgesia-mild-to-moderate-pain/management/aspirin/#recommended-doses

See here for full NHS guidance on menstrual migraine - highly recommend you have a good read before you see the GP and refer to it if you can. It tends to focus the mind of a GP in the right direction:

6-10 tablets, so 3-5 doses over a few days. Sometimes one dose is enough to see off the headache but other times it keeps coming back so I might take more doses over a few days.

I’ve just snapped at him and told him to shut up about it. I asked him if he’d prefer if I just suffered the headaches but he had no answer.

He seems to think that paracetomal are some kind of serious class A illegal substance.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks it’s a perfectly reasonable amount of tablets to take.

I probably should go to the doctors about getting something more suitable.

You can get a pack of 16 for 29p round here - that's seriously good value for a Class A drug, eh? No idea why anybody bothers with Cocaine and the like!

Seriously, he's being a total twat. I used to suffer period-related headaches and they were absolutely awful. Take your cheap, over-the-counter medication and tell DH to fuck off.

MattCauthon · 15/11/2025 17:30

There are a LOT of people like this out there, often men, but not exclusively. Very very judgemental about things they know nothing about! DH also seems to think that if I take paracetomol I'm on a slippery slope to an addiction to heroin. It's very irritating.

Knowsley · 15/11/2025 17:34

@VickyEadieofThigh , don't you find they get stuck up your nostrils?

Aibu to think he is being ridiculous?

If he has a completely irrational fear and hatred of women taking paracetamol (tylenol in the USA) his name isn't Robert Francis Kennedy Jr. is it by any chance?

Imisscoffee2021 · 15/11/2025 17:42

Hormonal headaches are vile, I started getting them when pregnant and now get them on ovulation and time of the month, whenever I get a hormone change basically. They make me vomit sometimes, so I take painkillers. Your DH is being unreasonable, you do get these people who proudly announce they never take pain relief but who often also take themselves out of the equation of homelife by lying it out in bed, which for most of us ain't an option!

Pumpkinsonastring · 15/11/2025 17:44

You can take 8 500mg paracetamol in a day. Your DH is being a dick. Including when he's unwell and won't take them. I wouldn't bother pandering to him when he's like this, he's literally prolonging his illness and pain deliberately, so I'd go out and leave him to fend for himself instead of running around making him cups of tea and listening to him sniffle loudly and make groaning noises from within the dressing gown of doom.

You can get cocodamol from the pharmacy if you want something stronger. It's usually sold as 8mg codeine/500mg paracetamol in it. But it's possible to get it with 12.5mg codeine. You can also take cocodamol or straight paracetamol with ibuprofen too. If that's not enough ask the pharmacist if there's anything else to try. If no luck sorting it yourself and you go to the doctors they'll probably just give you 30/500 cocodamol, that's what they give everyone for everything round here. So there's nothing "more suitable" that the doctor has really in most cases, if paracetamol is working for you then it's fine.

Misanthropologie · 15/11/2025 18:08

Ask him where he took his medical degree.

PluckyChancer · 15/11/2025 18:33

Your DH should be supporting not criticising you!

I take prescribed drugs (Triptans) for my migraines as they are far more effective than paracetamol for my migraine headaches.

They only started when I was in my 30’s and were definitely hormone related.

One thing that reduced the severity and frequency of the monthly headaches was taking a feverfew tablet daily. It took about 6 weeks to build up in my system and I took them for years until I hit the menopause, but they really made a difference and it was my previous (male!) GP who recommended I give them a go.

Valenciawarningmessage · 15/11/2025 18:40

Ohhh sympathies! Let me guess. Your painkillers enables you to somewhat power on and manage day to day living. But he gets a sniffle, refuses to take any modern medicine, and is in bed for however many days and doesn't pull his weight?

My rule is, if you don't help yourself, go to the docs, take medicine or what not, you must be able to power through (life with young kids)... if you take medicine and still don't feel well, then by all means, stay in bed/ rest. Maybe I'm just a meany, though!

But you don't sound like an addict! Migraines are crippling - I second trying a mix of Sumatriptan, naroproxin and paracetamol. It's worth a trip to the doc

FriendofDorothy · 15/11/2025 19:17

Don't be daft. I use a pestle and mortar to crush them up, obviously.
