Dh moaning at me for taking paracetomal

Cherrybomb101 · 15/11/2025 14:02

I suffer with bad headaches/possible migraines. To be very clear, I get regular eye tests, I’m not concerned. I’m not dehydrated. My headaches seem to be hormonal and always come around the time before my totm. I can’t just suffer the headaches because they get very bad and make me feel nauseous.

I might take probably 6-10 paracetamol spread over 2-3 days during a time when I’m having headache's which would be once a month or less.

Dh keeps saying that I’m adducted to painkillers, he’s worried how many tablets I’m taking, I shouldn’t be taking them, saying “oh my god “ comments if I buy a box of paracetamol in the supermarket shop, making stupid comments asking if I need tablets even when I haven’t said I’ve got a headache or anything.

Dh also refuses to take paracetamol himself even if he’s in pain or has a fever.

Aibu to think he is being ridiculous?

RosesAndHellebores · 15/11/2025 15:30

My DH is the same. It's bonkers. I pay him no attention whatsoever. His mother is exactly the same and believes taking a pill and/or illness is a sign of weakness. She refused sedation for a colonoscopy.

Ignore op.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 15/11/2025 15:32

@Juniperberry55
Do you think 6-10 paracetamol each month is really enough to cause an otherwise healthy person kidney and liver damage?

If it’s every month for decades, it will cause some damage. Paracetamol is like alcohol in that respect, the damage is subtlety cumulative. You won’t see the effects until you’re much older, but by then it is too late. Better, imho, to use it when there are no other better options.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 15/11/2025 15:30

Such drama “dangerous” 😆

No, it’s more along the lines of why take a shitty old drug that is for general pain every month when you can get the modern better drug that stops migraines in their tracks.

Most of the migraine specific drugs have fewer side effects and lower risks for better migraine relief than paracetamol.

If you read your previous post you literally said 'they damage your kidneys and liver more and more.'. thats why I was asking if you genuinely think op taking 6-10 paracetamol in a month was actually causing kidney and liver damage, which would generally be considered dangerous
That seemed like a very dramatic statement on your side
I haven't got a problem with people suggesting op goes to the gp for an alternative medication that might work more effectively. But it seems odd to be suggesting ops paracetamol usage is damaging her kidneys and liver

Therealjudgejudy · 15/11/2025 15:34

Your husband is thick.

Paracetamol is not addictive.

breezyyy · 15/11/2025 15:36

Cherrybomb101 · 15/11/2025 14:19

6-10 tablets, so 3-5 doses over a few days. Sometimes one dose is enough to see off the headache but other times it keeps coming back so I might take more doses over a few days.

I’ve just snapped at him and told him to shut up about it. I asked him if he’d prefer if I just suffered the headaches but he had no answer.

He seems to think that paracetomal are some kind of serious class A illegal substance.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks it’s a perfectly reasonable amount of tablets to take.

I probably should go to the doctors about getting something more suitable.

I don’t get them anymore but I used to take Migraleve and they worked well. You can buy them at any chemist.

KitchenDancing · 15/11/2025 15:37

If you need them then you need them. He needs to shut up

Thepeopleversuswork · 15/11/2025 15:38

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 15/11/2025 14:44

Your husband is dangerously ignorant and very very stupid.

I'm glad you are going to see the GP about your options.

This. Why would anyone take medical advice from someone who can’t tell the difference between paracetamol and oxycontin?

bridgetreilly · 15/11/2025 15:38

Menstrual migraines are a thing. I got them during peri. If your husband would like help in understanding that, maybe you could drop a large brick on his head once a month, and see if he is interested in any painkillers then. Idiot.

Snowflakecentral · 15/11/2025 15:38

So he's a martyr to the cause not taking pain relief when he has pain.
One of my exh was like this happy to a twat and complain like mad when he had pain but wouldn't take anything.
There is nothing wrong with what you are doing OP.

GuestBehind · 15/11/2025 15:39

I would sit him down for a very firm talk. And if he still continued I’d boot him. Sorry, life is too short to put up with that rubbish. He’s clearly one egg less in the carton.

breezyyy · 15/11/2025 15:39

I don’t understand why he’s sniping at you though OP. Does he get at you in other ways? It just seems so pointless.

SassyCow · 15/11/2025 15:40

Carry on doing what you're doing, you're in pain you're going to take pain relief. He should understand and not want you to suffer.

Cherrybomb101 · 15/11/2025 15:57

I will 100% make a GP appointment to see about getting some more suitable medication after this thread. I should have done it ages ago.

Bloozie · 15/11/2025 16:01

Your husband is being a dick.

That said, as others have said, your GP can prescribe Sumatriptan - an actually addictive painkiller, don’t tell your husband - to relieve migraines. I can request it from my GP on an open basis. It used to be a repeat prescription item but HRT has sorted out my monthly migraines - have you considered you might be perimenopausal?

If none of this applies, keep taking the paracetamol.

JustSawJohnny · 15/11/2025 16:02

He sounds unempathetic and, frankly, ignorant.

It is perfectly normal for women to suffer regular low level headaches due to hormone changes, often perpetuated by stress.

Men don't take as many pain killers as they don't suffer hormonal fluctuations monthly.

I'd be pointing this out to him as he sounds like an idiot.

If you think you are having migraines, see a doctor. Migraines are not headaches, they are a swelling in the brain and paracetamol will not touch them. Migraines need strong anti-inflammatories.

Sorry to sound like a know-it-all but sumatriptan isn't a pain killer and it's not addictive.

It's a strong anti inflammatory designed to narrow blood vessels in the brain quickly.

No need to worry about taking it.

Again, apologies - I just didn't want OP potentially avoiding a very effective medication for fear of it being addictive.

HelpMeUnpickThis · 15/11/2025 16:13

Is there some context for his concern? Is there something he has seen or read that has caused this worry?

I think you should take whatever pain relief you need (and see the doctor for a long term solution) but it might be helpful to understand what is driving his comments.

notacooldad · 15/11/2025 16:15

Yet again another man dismissing a woman’s pain as minor, as though we don’t know our own bodies and pain threshold.
You saved me typing it out!!!

Coffeeandbooks88 · 15/11/2025 16:17

Try migraleve. They work better for migraines.

Well it is damaging her kidneys and liver. There is no amount that does not. It is similar to alcohol or the UV in sunlight in that respect as the damage is both subtle and cumulates over decades of long term use, even with use that is well below the guide limits.

There is absolutely no context whatsoever. I’m the least likely person to become addicted to anything. I don’t drink, smoke, vape, take any other medication.

It’s literally paracetamol in the few days before starting period.

He’s not even saying (as others are here) to go and get better medication.

However I definitely am going to see the GP as it probably is migraines so I can see that paracetamol probably isn’t the most effective.

Lennonjingles · 15/11/2025 16:21

I use to suffer from hormonal migraines which lasted around 3 days when I did finally go to the GP and get some triptan medication, which changed my life, just one tablet (occasionally 2) took it away each month until I was menopausal and they stopped.

Does he have any habits/addictions?

Poodlelove · 15/11/2025 16:44

Thank goodness he is not a woman!

It has nothing to do with him.

Tell him you have spoken to your GP and he is being completely unreasonable as alot of people have to take daily medication to actually get up and go to work.
Cut the conversation dead when he mentions it again , he is being controlling.

you put in the drama of ‘dangerous’ 🫤

The nicswell link basically concludes that there may be potentially long term issues with taking it at particularly higher doses, op isn't on a high dose. Most of that page is talking about how the studies aren't ideal
Almost every drug at high doses over a significant period of time can cause damage. I don't see how op taking 6-10 tablets a month is going to cause kidney and liver damage if she is otherwise well.
You did suggested she was going to damage her liver and kidneys, as I said before that it saying it is dangerous. It is one of the safer drugs. You compared it with alcohol previously. If someone drank a bottle of wine once a month, it's unlikely to cause them to have long term kidney and liver damage, if it was a bottle a night, then yer probably
