WIBU to attend A&E?

Hi everyone.

posting here for traffic.
my nan had DVTs and clots so it's in the family history.
I've been having a niggling pain in the back of my right calf. It's not overly painful and doesn't stop me doing anything. Can bear weight fine, I can stretch it. Stretching doesn't hurt but feels a bit uncomfortable / tight.
it actually hurts more when I'm sat still but I don't know if that's because if I'm sat not doing anything I'm noticing it more. Pain comes and goes, it's not there all the time.

pain is like a crampy dull ache pain, it moves slightly around my whole bottom of my leg towards my foot and up to my thigh. No swelling, no redness, no hot skin to touch.
I saw the GP this morning who essentially said because I don't have any of the classic signs that they don't think it's a DVT.

I have had high d-dimers before but never found a cause. I know they're non specific.

it's just bugging me because everyone says DVTs can be a silent killer and particularly women don't often get the classic pains, so I guess AIBU to attend A&E essentially for a mild - at times moderate achy calf?

I have a heart condition (LONG QT syndrome) I don't think that makes my risk any higher IFAIK, I'm slim, don't smoke, not event surgery and haven't had chemo since 2017. I'm 31 years old. Also haven't given birth in 5 years.
it doesn't stop me doing usual activities.

if anyone has any experience I'd be ever so grateful if you could share. Thank you!

I hope you get some answers.

I've got a chronic DVT in my leg, but it has never looked like that. I didn't have any symptoms at all, but it was picked up on a PET scan as I had cancer and the hospital wanted a full body scan to check for any further cancers. On seeing the scan results, my surgeon phoned me on a Sunday and told me to take myself straight to A & E, where they put me on blood thinners.

BeautifulSongsofLove · 15/11/2025 16:06

Neftrious · 15/11/2025 13:45

Urgent care wouldnt be able to do the scan you need, so it would be A&E

Thank you...

The redness also suggests infection/cellulitis and you'll need blood tests so you need A&E for these and an ultrasound scan if DVT is suspected

LIZS · 15/11/2025 16:35

Cellulitis presents like this.

Don't have urgent care treatment centre unfortunately

however it has suddenly come up like this..

do muscle strains look like that at all? Pain is no worse thankfully!

That looks like a lot like cellulitis, but I don't know what a DVT looks like. After Hours or A&E!
Good luck

Doctors appt, not A&E

olderbutwiser · 15/11/2025 17:36

Did you go to Haslemere or an A&E? If I’d seen your post earlier I’d have said Haslemere just because the waits are so much lower and they can always send you on. Love haslemere!

I can see what you mean in the pic but there doesn't seem to me much IRL maybe a touch of redness on the other leg but I'd been sat on my left leg (not the painful one)

I've been triaged now, there's absolutely nowhere to sit down, there's families here with 2-3 people with them and it always pisses me off as there's injured or sick people sat on the floor but hey ho, better safe than sorry!

Good luck, really hope you get answers soon x

GotSomeChipsAhoyIfYoureHungry · 15/11/2025 19:05

Hi all,

no real update as of yet. I'm still waiting to be seen by the doctor. There's literally not a deaf to be had unfortunately! But I should be seen soon.

the redness has subsided but the pain is still there. I do have a bit of chest pain, but I do have a small tumour in my lung so hoping it's that as it flares up when I'm stressed or ill.

thanks for all your messages.

I did call the urgent care but they said they wouldn't be able to deal with the DVT so advised me to go to hospital so I'm in A&E instead. :)

Everyone says DVTs can be a silent killer

I never heard that before. Am doubting it's a common belief.

I get leg cramps if I sit still for >= 2 hours. It's become my normal. They clear almost instantly as soon as I walk around. This has been noticeable for ... 2 or 3 years now? How overdue for sudden death am I ?

There are many threads of it and some people have posted on mine that the only symptom they had was mild cramp, or even symptomless.

I have a heart condition and a tumour in my lung that does make me more susceptible plus it runs in my family.

women especially seem to have less symptoms than men. It's never worth the risk. It can be a silent killer because it can move to your heart or lungs, and only then you get symptoms. And then there's a huge chance it could kill you.

Guessing you don’t have a family history or a tumour in your lung like op. Cancer makes the blood more “gloopy” so she’ll be higher risk.

For DH it was a silent killer.

Gawd I'm so sorry 😢 it's so important to get checked isn't it. I think there should be more checks for clots especially as more and more people are reporting a similar thing

I'm so sorry 😔 was this due to a clotting disorder or something? I'm seeing more and more people state the same thing.

I've got a positive d-dimer but it's not hugely high. I've had a jab in my tummy and now waiting for doc to let me know next steps.

1 Obesity and phlebitis. 2 obesity and cancer recovery, and another young (under 40)
with flu. Lack of movement and not enough fluids. All with no chance, sudden and died.

Greybeardy · 15/11/2025 20:56

deffo needs looking at given how it's changed over the day, etc. and they need to think about a dvt and cellulitis, but there are some more straightforward things in the list of possibilities like a ruptured bakers cyst too (can also cause a raised d-dimer)...with a bit of luck maybe it's something like that.

It very much is a silent killer and is often described as such by medical professionals. Your leg cramps are not what is being spoken about here. DVT is not the same as normal leg cramps. A DVT really isn't something to make uneducated jokes about.

Jeeez that's so traumatic for you to go through I'm so sorry. So terribly young too 😢 thank you for sharing though, stories like that are what made me come to A&E in the first place. I'm so sorry :(

I had this in my arm - swelling, ache, heat, felt like an egg in my arm. Turned out to be a rare complication from whooping cough jab (or that was the theory anyway). Good luck

ResusciAnnie · 16/11/2025 09:10

Hope you’re ok OP! I almost said are you sure there’s no urgent care in your area…. Ours is Haslemere 😆 they’re amazing there. I hope you went there instead of A&E just cos A&E sounds no fun. Also heads up you can go to OOH GP at Royal Surrey instead of A&E, it’s essentially the same just with appointment times. We’ve never had to go to A&E as always done GP at the RSCH instead - DS was admitted from there once.

Anyway hope you have a positive update!
