I’m in so much pain I feel sick but my GP won’t see me

I injured myself five months ago. I’m seeing physio but it’s a two month wait for a face to face appointment and every night doing the exercises the video physio set me is leaving me in agony.

It’s to the point I feel sick and can’t concentrate on my work, I’m taking the highest dose of ibuprofen and paracetamol I can but they’re not doing a thing. The GP keeps pushing me back and saying it’s a physio issue and because of that, they can’t prescribe me anything.

I have been in this pain for five months now and I just can’t keep doing it. WIBU to sit in my GP’s reception on Monday until they’ll sit me in front of a doctor and let me explain the impact it’s having on my life?

OP if you faint with the pain someone will call an ambulance and you will end up in A and E anyway so as you work in the hospital walk into A and E but DONT start asking for drugs you want them to find out where/what is causing your pain, when they find out they will give you help particularly if you keep fainting with the pain. Been there done it.

i have a face to face appointment coming up. They can’t get me in any sooner (I work in the hospital, I know how it is, they’re not lying), they have me on the cancellation list but they’re few and far between because people are waiting so long

Do you not have occupational health to help? We can self refer to our hospital physio at my work. It’s great!

with regards to your gp… what services have you got? 111? Walk in centre? Urgent treatment centre? A&e?

granted it’s not an a&e situation but if you are in this much pain and have zero other options what are you supposed to do????

and yes - complain about your GP - contact your local ICB to find out how to do this

An ambulance is definitely not a requirement for all incidents of fainting (especially if explained)

I feel for you. I was referred to minor injuries dept by my GP and seen within a couple of hours for similar excruciating knee injury. Physio without an xray and examination first is odd? I was told to expect a pretty bad ligament tear ( medial in my case) could take up to 6 months to heal fully and they were correct. You shouldn’t still be in pain. I would go to a&e.

justasking111 · 14/11/2025 19:06

Stop exercising. See a physiotherapist in person who will physically examine you rather than over zoom. Rest and ice. Get a sick note.

BeautifulSongsofLove · 14/11/2025 19:06

Stop the exercises, see your GP on Monday or A&E if the pain isn't easing with pain relief, to discuss if further investigations (ultrasound or MRI) are required, these tests can't be done at a walk-in centre.

pinklilys · 14/11/2025 19:07

Our physio can prescribe - ah but it is attached to our GP, not an independent so may be different

blankittyblank · 14/11/2025 19:07

I’m confused why your parents won’t help you? Surely if you explain to them how much pain you’re in, and that physio isn’t for 2 more months they’d be inclined to help? I don’t understand why they’ve just accepted that you have physio so it’s ok. Have you not said to them everything you’ve said here? About how isolated you are how much pain you’re in?

Whatsthatsheila · 14/11/2025 19:10

Urgh I just read all your updates and you’ve kinda got on my nerves a little bit

111 - ring it find a GP to see you

a&e - so freaking what if you have to sit there for 18hrs. You said that you had an accident and you have finally managed to see a video consult physio who thinks you have torn the ligaments in your knee - that’s an acceptable reason to go to accident and emergency - you wouldn’t be expected to just basically suffer for the next however many months.

and are you telling me that you have absolutely no one - no one at all to take you to the walk in centre? If you told your parents how much pain you are in they would say no? Or your siblings? friends? Neighbours?

FlyingApple · 14/11/2025 19:11

Not every physio is equal, maybe get another one if that's possible.

Also there are some good physios and doctors on YouTube that could hopefully narrow down your symptoms and help you understand what's wrong and what will help.

Different usernames but this injury has been posted about for MONTHS. a spell say in a&e months ago would surely be better than this ongoing agony!

Don't do the exercises the physio gave you if they're that painful. Insist you're referred for an MRI scan to get a proper diagnosis. I was in agony with my knee which physio insisted was osteoarthritis- I went privately for a scan and they found that I had a fracture and the exercises I was given have exacerbated the problem.

MILLYmo0se · 14/11/2025 19:15

You need an MRI to see what is actually wrong with your knee, it's pointless to be having physio when they don't know what the actual damage is

DuchessofStaffordshire · 14/11/2025 19:17

I'm sorry but I have read the whole thread and it's given me a headache.
You need to woman up a bit op.
If you are really 'in agony' you'll have to go and sit in A and E for 18 hrs.
If not, contact the physio in the morning and explain the situation
The GP has followed local guidelines and referred you to physio. I don't know what else you'd like them to do.
There are loads of private physics, sports therapists who will also see you.

Oooh you know when I read all the updates I was thinking there’s an element of “I want sympathy but I’m going to refuse all advice”…

so you think serial poster?

AllJoyAndNoFun · 14/11/2025 19:21

You can buy naproxen from online pharmacies. It’s not crazy expensive.

LBFseBrom · 14/11/2025 19:21

I am so sorry you are going through this but I feel the first action to be taken is stopping the physio. I understand the 'no pain no gain' theory but if this is still happening after long term physio, it's not working.

I knew this thread felt familiar. Either someone who is attention seeking or trying to figure out a way to get drugs, I guess.

The penny has dropped. Thanks guys. I'd had enough by the time I posted above. Absolutely nuts!

SweetSilverLark · 14/11/2025 17:28

The physio thinks there’s a chance I’ve torn the ligaments in my knee.

The doctors won’t see me at all, I’ve tried multiple times but they just refuse each time. They won’t even give me a phone call.

Is it the Dr who won't see you or you can't get past the receptionist?
Sounds like you really do need to be seen and taken seriously.
Try 111 I have known them to intervene when the Drs don't want to know. As someone else said stop doing the exercises for now

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 14/11/2025 19:36

I have the same injury and physio won’t work. I went private and was still messed around until finally a specialist said surgery is the only way to fix it. A tear won’t just heal through physio. Not helpful in your case but I’d stop the physio and push for an MRI referral.

Formal complaint and change GPs.

Mine would not do this. This is a poor surgery.

You can buy co-codamol which is a mix of paracetamol and codeine at a pharmacists.

npt likely to help with nausea though. Codeine will help the pain but makes many people feel nauseous.

Way too low a dose. As a pp said, Zapain is probably required and needs a GP to prescribe.

BoarBrush · 14/11/2025 19:43

I'm pretty sure I commented on your last post about this but in my area it's only physios that can refer you on for a scan or orthopaedics referral. You need to get onto the physio team about getting imaging done ASAP or even a steroid injection in the meantime.

I know all about pain and GPs not listening (back fuckery since 15yo and never once scanned until this year 39yo), I've been there having to buy diazepam and weed from the local dealer just to try do something for the pain, ended up giving in and taking dhs morphine last time, that admittance got my gp out for a home visit and an ambulance called for me by him where I was finally given an mri and the admittance that it had been missed far too long!
