I’m in so much pain I feel sick but my GP won’t see me

I injured myself five months ago. I’m seeing physio but it’s a two month wait for a face to face appointment and every night doing the exercises the video physio set me is leaving me in agony.

It’s to the point I feel sick and can’t concentrate on my work, I’m taking the highest dose of ibuprofen and paracetamol I can but they’re not doing a thing. The GP keeps pushing me back and saying it’s a physio issue and because of that, they can’t prescribe me anything.

I have been in this pain for five months now and I just can’t keep doing it. WIBU to sit in my GP’s reception on Monday until they’ll sit me in front of a doctor and let me explain the impact it’s having on my life?

Stop doing the exercises.

physios will often tell you to push through the pain but if the exercises are causing enough pain to have an impact on your life they aren’t right for you.

MidnightPatrol · 14/11/2025 17:26

What’s the injury?

Have you had a doctor look at it at all, or just straight to a physio?

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 14/11/2025 17:27

Have you spoken to the physio? Some of them here can refer on to the 'next level' which would be MSK or Ortho. They can usually order investigations as well

Tink3rbell30 · 14/11/2025 17:27

Have you got Zapain?

The physio thinks there’s a chance I’ve torn the ligaments in my knee.

The doctors won’t see me at all, I’ve tried multiple times but they just refuse each time. They won’t even give me a phone call.

No, the doctor won’t see me to prescribe me anything.

I can't see what difference going there on Monday would make then?

Could you try a local walk in centre maybe?

Octavia64 · 14/11/2025 17:30

You can buy co-codamol which is a mix of paracetamol and codeine at a pharmacists.

npt likely to help with nausea though. Codeine will help the pain but makes many people feel nauseous.

We don’t have a walk in centre in my town. I need them to understand the impact this is having on my life and the fact I can’t workout etc anymore because I am in agony

How can the doctor refuse to see you? Are they triaging you before they give you an appointment?

OwlBeThere · 14/11/2025 17:30

I’d be speaking to the practise manager. It’s absolute nonsense that they can’t prescribe painkillers while you do physio, but I agree with a previous poster who says stop the exercises. If it hurts that much then it’s not helping, you’ve given it a good go.

I put in an e consult (only way to contact my doctor) and they just text me to say that the only thing they can tell me to do is to reach out to the physio team. They won’t even listen to the fact I’m under physio now and it’s making the pain so much worse

If the exercises are agony and not just uncomfortable then stop doing them and ask for an emergency appointment with the physio to discuss. Throwing medication at this via the GP is not the best way forward, you need to get to the bottom of things. Physios can make referrals to other services/diagnostics.

Haha very easily.

in the case of mine they just say this is a hospital issue you need to wait to see the consultant. The waits are months.

That is terrible.

And they wonder why people are turning up at A+E.

Have you got a walk in centre you could go to? Your GP sounds useless.

elastamum · 14/11/2025 17:32

If you have torn the ligaments in your knee it probably won't heal through physio. You need an MRI and possibly surgery.

GucciBear · 14/11/2025 17:32

I have no idea what the injury is but OK have an naturopath who has worked wonders with needles, massage and a machine.

I would turn up to whatever local walk-in clinic you can access.

Peridoteage · 14/11/2025 17:33

Complain to the practice manager. They can't "refuse to see you", you are a registered patient for whom they receive state funding. You've waited two months to see if it resolves, it hasn't. You need to see the doctor.

Can you change gp? Your practice sound terrible.

i have a face to face appointment coming up. They can’t get me in any sooner (I work in the hospital, I know how it is, they’re not lying), they have me on the cancellation list but they’re few and far between because people are waiting so long

Go and see a physio privately, for a second opinion more than anything but also you’ll be seen in a few days that way.

Well if it's coming up then that's positive - if you can't be seen sooner that's unfortunate - but it's definitely the way to go.

SpaceRaccoon · 14/11/2025 17:35

You clearly need a scan of the knee.

What can I do though? I have to wait for the NHS, I can’t afford a private scan and have no means of getting one.

Drs are now under stricter guidelines regarding prescription pain medication.
What is it exactly you want your Dr to do?
That's not a goady question, but just what do you actually want?
If its stronger pain medication, they likely wont give it anyway.
If its referral to a different department, your physio will get this done faster than your GP in all honesty.
