To assume all that endorse the ‘let them’ saying are working for a MLM

(prefacing this by stating that I don’t mean any disrespect with this question. I am genuinely curious. If you make money via MLM then good for you!)
i see ‘let them’ mindset recommendations fairly frequently on different platforms. As soon as I do I associate it with a MLM rep with a script about their digital ebook to teach how to make money online. Do people outwith MLM subscribe to it? Obviously the mindset was recognised before the title of the book was coined, but I’m talking specifically about the ‘let them’ enthusiasts. Not sure if it’s just used as an argument when they receive any questions on their ‘business’ that they want a quick rebuttal for.
YABU - I am a fan and am not associated with MLM
YANBU - yes all MLM

I learnt the term MLM in 2010s it’s been around online for awhile. ‘Let Them’ is an excellent strategy to not take accountability or responsibility for your behaviour.

Then it’s being used wrong! Let them is more about not being responsible for other people’s behaviour!

It’s like ‘drop the rope’- an extremely useful method for working out what’s your problem and what’s someone else’s problem that they are trying to make you resolve.

FrankLeeInsane · 18/11/2025 09:03

I thought 'let them' (haven't read MR book but have a friend who is a fan) was about not taking trying to be in control or responsible for other people's emotions, thoughts, activations, motivations... i.e that all you can control are your own. Not exactly rocket-science, but might be helpful to those who feel like everything is their responsibility/fault.

I have never heard of it in conjunction with MLM (and I do know what MLM means although barely in my orbit and I have successfully avoided so far). How would the two things even conjoin?

Zempy · 18/11/2025 09:07

I agree with the Let Them theory.

I have nothing to do with any MLM.

I have never associated the two together and still don’t understand why anyone would make such a connection.

It's weird so many people are not able to use google.
If you can't type MLM into google (it's the first thing that comes up), why join in the thread?

PodMom · 18/11/2025 09:18

I know what an mlm is though not involved with one. I’ve not heard of “let them” being a coined phrase as such. However I like it as a concept.

I don’t think from my pov it wouldn’t be about me not taking accountability but more not letting other’s opinions affect me. as long as you’re not doing anything wrong that’s not a bad way to be.

Hike your own hike kind of thing.

I would be willing to bet that at least someone in your private school circles is flogging Usborne books, or Tropic skincare.

it plays out differently ime often a creative of some kind- interior designer (seem to be a favourite), an artist, a photographer of a particular style of photography, consultant in personal style

no one is directly talking about earnings (doesn't often seem to be much regardless how successful they claim to be) as its just not the done thing

I listened to the Mel Robbins podcast episode about the let them theory as it came up on my Spotify homepage. As somewhat of an overthinker and control freak (excellent combo, I know) I found some points useful although there's a lot of crossover with the sphere of control theory, or at least for the points that resonated with me. There were an awful lot of caveats.

I've never been involved in an MLM and wouldn't buy from one so I've had little interaction with them, however from what I do know, I can imagine Mel Robbins would be somewhat of a figurehead based on her persona and the type of content she produces. So it would make sense to me that a lot of MLM members (?) are touting the same lines she is.

How do you know they’re “unrelated to MLM” if you don’t know what it is?

The types that tout the “Let Them” nonsense are exactly the types who promote various MLM models. It excuses their behaviour so they latch on and the rest of us are just “unkind”.

Does nobody here watch Panorama and the like?

Well I know what it is know because of this thread…..I guess I don’t know 100% they are unrelated but I would be surprised if say for example Millie mackintosh who has family and personal wealth needs to do MLM

My take on the let them theory was more to do what’s right for you, say for example don’t choose a job to please your parents, don’t stay in a relationship because you are worried what others will think, don’t follow your dreams to travel/start a business/move to a new area because you are worried people will think you are silly.

i can see how people would use it to be unkind/selfish but she does cover that in the book.

Im of the view that a thread on a mundane chat forum is akin to someone chatting in the kitchen at work or the pub.

Someone mentions something, you say 'oh whats that then, I havent heard of that'?

The person starting the conversation describes it so you can engage

What they dont do, is say 'well look it up and dont join in with our discussion if you dont know what we're talking about'.

Its chit chat. Most people are able to engage by explaining what they're talking about.

thetemptationofchocolate · 19/11/2025 09:58

I'm honestly surprised by how many people have not heard of MLM. It's everywhere and has been for many years. I'm guessing the OP is also used to seeing it everywhere too and that's why they didn't put in a long explanation of it in their post.
But then I quite often find myself looking at a post and thinking why didn't I know about this? I think there would be people surprised that I hadn't heard of the thing, whatever it was. So I shouldn't be surprised by those who don't know about MLM, and it's perhaps a reminder to all that not everyone lives the same life and a bit of explanation might be a good thing.

There's a lot of threads on here, I just wouldn't have the energy to insert myself into all of them.
