To assume all that endorse the ‘let them’ saying are working for a MLM

(prefacing this by stating that I don’t mean any disrespect with this question. I am genuinely curious. If you make money via MLM then good for you!)
i see ‘let them’ mindset recommendations fairly frequently on different platforms. As soon as I do I associate it with a MLM rep with a script about their digital ebook to teach how to make money online. Do people outwith MLM subscribe to it? Obviously the mindset was recognised before the title of the book was coined, but I’m talking specifically about the ‘let them’ enthusiasts. Not sure if it’s just used as an argument when they receive any questions on their ‘business’ that they want a quick rebuttal for.
YABU - I am a fan and am not associated with MLM
YANBU - yes all MLM

Putting aside Mel Robbins ripped off an already published theory.....
Haven't MLMs been around for longer? I remember tupperwear parties, ann summers, virgin cosmetics & some weight loss drink (i dont remember the name)
Oh & I think i have a vague memory of a Jamie Oliver party!

Juice Plus!

I've heard of MLMs but never known what it stands for

MrsF111 · 18/11/2025 07:56

I’ve read the let them theory book but had never heard of MLM until seeing this thread! I do like the idea of the let them theory and enjoyed the book as someone who worries too much what people think! The book has been promoted quite a bit by Instagram influencers who are unrelated to MLM too

LawrieForShepherdsBoy · 18/11/2025 08:02

Really surprised people haven’t heard of MLMs. It’s not a Tik Tok, WC, or MN thing. There have been multiple news stories, podcasts and just in general public discourse for a long time.

How do you know they’re “unrelated to MLM” if you don’t know what it is?

The types that tout the “Let Them” nonsense are exactly the types who promote various MLM models. It excuses their behaviour so they latch on and the rest of us are just “unkind”.

Does nobody here watch Panorama and the like?

What’s a MLM again? Why cut out half your audience by not being clear - esp given people will be half asleep on top 😴

I was clear? If you don’t know what something means you would need to google it?

I think MLM is quite a working class Facebook type thing, in private school mum circles I’d never heard of it. God I sound like a snob, I’m really not.

Edited

🤣 nope you’re just oblivious. It is rife in the private schools, middle class women are exactly the target for most MLMs. “Aspirational”, “Entrepreneurial Freedom”, “Brand Partnership”.

It is designed to be aimed at these women, the ones who have the initial outlay and the influence. Yes, scentsy came along for the working class women, but if you’re telling me that Pampered Chef, Herbalife and Nu never made it into the private school circles then you’re completely deluded.

soupyspoon · 18/11/2025 08:14

Ive never heard of anything of these things

Tupperware and Avon yes.

wonderegg · 18/11/2025 08:15

Eh? I love the Let Them book as do all my friends but we are all in proper jobs.
I dont know a single person involved in an MLM scheme so I dont quite get what its got to do with "let them"?

Also "let them" isnt a new concept by any means, its based on stoicism which is a very good philosophy

Most people know what MLMs are by now though

In the time it took you to type that, you could have told us what an MLM is...

BertieBotts · 18/11/2025 08:21

I actually do agree with the principle of "Let them" in terms of don't spend mental energy worrying about things you can't control, don't let people's opinions get in the way of how you live your life, and don't overly expend emotional energy trying to change other people's minds.

I admit I haven't read the book, but I do get the impression from the social media angle that people tend to take it more to an extreme on the side of completely ignoring all feedback and listen less to the principle about not telling others what to do (as they all seem to use the phrase I can't stand: "Do better.")

I did listen to the If Books Could Kill episode about it and they seemed to think she had completely stolen the concept from somebody else Grin I mean - it's hardly a unique thought so obviously, but in a more specific way ie there is actually a poem that keeps getting referred to the whole way through which is copyrighted to someone else.

Where have all the posters come from that don’t know what an mlm is? Bots?

People who don’t have access to Google, and can’t be bothered typing “What is an MLM” into a search engine. They can do that in the same time it takes them to type a moany reply..,

MermaidMummy06 · 18/11/2025 08:29

If you've ever been invited to a 'party' at someone's house, where a promised afternoon tea is prefaced by watching someone demonstrate overpriced goods, like storage, scents, candles, even adult toys, and being eyeballed to buy while eating, so the host can get gifts for free, you've been multi level marketed. Extra points if you've been targeted to join.

They're everywhere though. Mostly anyone waving a catalogue and hinting you too can have financial freedom is an MLM. Tupperware, Avon, doTerra, Monat, and any number of companies.

They work by the lowest downlines selling a bit & buying themselves to hit targets, while the commission is paltry & they actually lose money. The commissions trickle upwards to the higher levels, and they make the real money.

I would be willing to bet that at least someone in your private school circles is flogging Usborne books, or Tropic skincare.

Interesting. I knew Usborne had sellers, but wasn't aware it was a MLM and never seen anyone try and "push" joining it as a seller either.

DS loves their books!

NConthe · 18/11/2025 08:33

Now they’re expanding into “travel consultancy”, anyone claiming not to know anyone who has been involved in MLM is either oblivious or has the tiniest of circles anyway.

Funny how these threads attract so many adamant “not in my circle” posters though, whilst attempting to validate the “let them” excuse.

LOL all of my friends have proper jobs.

Sorry to disappoint you!

Tootingbec · 18/11/2025 08:36

MLM = multi level marketing aka pyramid schemes but <just about> “legal”

That woman you know from the school run who is “an independent travel agent”? MLM

Bloke on LinkedIn marketing training courses for how to make money as a life coach? MLM

Tropic skincare - MLM

etc etc. no one will be making money except the 0.01% at the top of the pyramid.

Once you see it, you see it everywhere. And yes, I can 💯 see the whole “Let Them” bollocks being one of the mantras of people involved in MLM’s.

Highly recommend the Podcast “The Dream” (Season 1) if you want to find out more and get very very angry as well

mindutopia · 18/11/2025 08:36

This is how I’ve lived my whole life. My standard approach to all situations. I am not an influencer. Definitely have never run an MLM or bought from one. 😂

It definitely seems fairly counter to the MLM business model though, which is putting up with all sorts of crazy shit from people and being new besties with everyone you meet.

You might want to do a little bit more research into both Let Them and MLM because you clearly don’t understand either.

And yes, you can and most likely will have a “proper job” alongside flogging Herbalife or Juiceplus or NuSkin. You can also have a “proper job” and use “LetThem” to silence anyone who dares to comment on your questionable “Side Hustle”.

And?! What the fuck has a “proper job” got to do with MLM or “Let Them”?

Fizbosshoes · 18/11/2025 08:47

I live in a fairly mc area and there is a lot of tropics , usborne books, captain tortue, herbalife, some essential oil stuff, utility warehouse etc

And there used to be a lot of dubious ads on local FB for jobs that were flexible, choose your own hours, sounding too good to be true, etc etc while not actually explaining what they would actually be doing....🙄 every time I saw one it screamed mlm to me, but it seemed to get plenty of interest
