😂Joking-sort of

But seriously, what do you buy your child’s teacher at Christmas?
I worked in a school and there were 100% the mums/kids who bought the flashiest presents-good perfume, champagne, huge bouquets and it did have an effect and everyone knew who those mums were
I’m sure teachers will deny this 😅
A good, thoughtful present does make a difference

Don't buy them anything. Christ they're just doing their contracted job. Social workers for example have an equally hard job and not only do they get fuck all, they're not allowed to accept gifts so I'm never sure why those working for the LEA are.
Buying teachers a gift is like clapping when a pilot lands the plane. Cringey and unnecessary.

As Catholics at a Catholic school, we bought a cute Nativity (not expensive) for a few teachers and they were thrilled. Walking into the classrooms a few years later, there they were, in use.

It was different, small and practical.

I have baked for teachers before, too.

I'd love that! Some one bought me a Christmas tree for the classroom a few years ago. It comes out every year.

What?? £50?? Jesus

I know right I only spend £20 on my sister

Mumwithbaggage · 13/11/2025 21:55

I taught for many many years and I never had favourites based on what parents bought me. I have had some lovely presents and have very much appreciated them and there are three or four cards that are in my special box because of the lovely messages. There have also been many many children who never gave me a card or a present but I will always remember very fondly.

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 13/11/2025 22:50

Honestly, if the child is a PITA the Christmas present won’t change my opinion of them but might make me think ‘at least the parents realise their child is hard work so they sent me wine, as they realise I need it’.

Also the stance I take with my own child’s teacher - you did well not to lose your s* with him this term, here’s some wine 🤣

Are you sure you're a teacher? 'Would of'!

Do you know the meaning of 'Would of'

As in past tense.....

As in 'In the past'

🤣

I never correct grammar or spellings on here, unless someone has already done so but incorrectly.

TrixieFatell · 14/11/2025 00:05

Nothing at Christmas. I do write then a message at the end of the year thanking them for all they have done and we do give a small gift.

The way I find to making my child a favourite is having an enthusiastic learner who is friendly and polite.

liquoricetorpedoes · 14/11/2025 00:12

It’s the small, personal gifts I love. I’m secondary and one girl painted coasters for each teacher with symbols of their subject, mine is on my desk five years later and always makes me smile.

We got this sort of thing https://www.market.unicefusa.org/p/handmade-ayacucho-ceramic-folk-art-christmas/U64122/.

The little doors open and close and it’s just a dote of a thing. Prices quoted are in $Au. It’s changed a bit in the ten years since we were buying. But it’s still sweet.

Organize a collection so the teacher can take home a nice fat wad of cash.

No teacher wants twenty nine bottles of perfume or boxes of chocolates or (sorry) home made cards.

It's 'would have', contracted form is 'would've'. Likewise, it's 'should have' or 'should've', I often see this incorrectly written as 'should of'.

I usually ignore spelling and grammar mistakes as I make plenty myself, but it's worrying to see that someone who works with children is unaware that 'would of' is incorrect.

'Would of' has no meaning because it's incorrect.

What you're mishearing is 'would've', which is a contraction of 'would have'.

golemmings · 14/11/2025 06:25

Dad's friend's mum was about the only parent in the year who didn't give gifts. The girls would come here and bake a cake of biscuits for the teacher at the end of the year so the friend had something to give.

furrysocks · 14/11/2025 06:48

A nice card is great. I really don’t need a load of cheap wine and chocolates and they’ll just get regifted or binned. As others have said, supporting the school and generally not being a twat is much more appreciated

it is worrying if you're teaching this.

Grammarsaurus is very good if you're unsure of the SpaG rules.

The best one i ever heard was hyperbole pronounced 'hyper-bowl'. Teacher was adamant she was correct.

Just get them a £50 voucher for somewhere nice.

Is this a wind up? You can’t seriously believe that everyone can afford to gift this to a teacher? Some parents will be struggling to spend that amount on their DC at Christmas FFS.

IamnotSethRogan · 14/11/2025 07:23

Everyone in the class contributes a tenner and we get some nice vouchers for the teacher so they don't end up with a load of useless tat

My goodness just show the teacher that you are an approachable, easy going and reasonable parent. That is how to get your child liked by being liked yourself.

This!
Apart from that, I'm happiest with a box of maltesers.

You're wrong. It should be would have possible abbreviated to would've. 'Would of' is just cringingly awful. I wouldn't generally correct people's grammar on MN but if you are a teacher you should be ashamed. If you were teaching that to my children or grandchildren I would correct you in person.
