😂Joking-sort of

But seriously, what do you buy your child’s teacher at Christmas?
I worked in a school and there were 100% the mums/kids who bought the flashiest presents-good perfume, champagne, huge bouquets and it did have an effect and everyone knew who those mums were
I’m sure teachers will deny this 😅
A good, thoughtful present does make a difference

Gifts for teachers should be banned. It makes me feel so uncomfortable when mums get huge sums together - hundreds of pounds sometimes for one teacher - and then I think of some of the parents on really low incomes who can barely afford money at home for presents for their kids.

Kids can make cards!

slowsakura · 13/11/2025 14:34

I like it when schools do an Amazon wishlist instead. Then I can give to the school.

CurlewKate · 13/11/2025 14:37

Being polite, quiet and respectful does not necessarily make a child the teacher’s favorite. Being the teacher’s favorite is not necessarily a good thing. Having a teacher who has favorites is definitely not a good thing.

Would something personalised (with name on) be nice or naff?

I never thought of emailing the head 🤔 what to say?

You are a former teacher.

You really don’t know what to say to the head???

A good, thoughtful present does make a difference
You were bribed to think better of the kids in your class, if the parents brought you an extravagant gift?

It is good you are no longer teaching.

ldnmusic87 · 13/11/2025 14:40

I was a teacher, and honestly, a little homemade card used to make me cry.

Well, if you're saying something nice to the teacher about how much you appreciate them then it's really good for the Head to know this too. I always did this and teachers told me that this really made a difference - and it could be helpful to have positive feedback if they're on probation, have an appraisal coming up or are applying for promotion! Much better than a box of Ferrero Rocher!

Just get them a £50 voucher for somewhere nice.

I was a teacher for 30 years and would have been embarrassed to have received a present that expensive.

@Justlookatthatrain Trying to buy my favour would have had the opposite effect. Don't even try.

Naff. Don't do personalised.

Agree. Worst when it's a "whole class" gift but only children whose parents contribute are allowed to sign the card.
It should be like the rest of local govt where gifts can't be accepted

Most teachers will say a homemade card. When I was at school in the 80’s a girl in my class brought in a single strawberry for our teacher. She had helped grow some strawberries in her own garden. She had spoken about the strawberries in school. Teacher said she loved so she brought one in for her. Our teacher was overjoyed with this.

This teacher took the whole class to her house about a 10 minuits walk away. It was absolutely massive Victorian detached with the old separate staircase for servants. We explored her house and played in the garden. She didn’t need any lavish gifts but was overjoyed by that single gesture that hadn’t been bought in a shop.

My best gift was from a non verbal ASD boy who I had in my form for 5 years.
It was hard to know if he was bonded to me at all despite me doing lots for him and being very supportive.
One random day he came in with a tescos bag and gave it to me without making eye contact and inside was a plant and a note - which said "I have made you a cutting of my Aloe Vera plant Thank you Miss."
I emailed home to say Thank you - parents knew nothing of it.
My best ever gift - as well as handmade cards

Ive made biscuits (more at christmas time). Last year my son did little paintings for his teachers on a mini canvas.

Jk987 · 13/11/2025 15:02

Wow
The first response nails it.

Justlookatthatrain · 13/11/2025 15:04

Would a painting of teacher and dd be awful-done by Dd obviously
I asked Dd, she said she wanted to make or get her a bracelet or necklace with her name on? Is that naff?

I was in secondary teaching and didn't want gifts from children. I guess that it's probably different at primary?

CosyDenimShark · 13/11/2025 15:07

Do you know what the teacher enjoys outside of school? Years ago my DS1 told me that his teacher loved diving and she'd shown the class all of her diving pictures. He wanted to get her something diving related which was tough!
I found this really unusual jointed diving figure keyring. Not much money but he watched her open it at her desk and said to me "Mummy, she opened it when we were all busy and then she ran out of the room crying".
A couple of years later she stopped us in school to show us her car keys complete with little diver. She said she loved it and has used it every day since getting it.

I think our best gift to teachers was in the pandemic. It was a rainow badge with their name on. I had a lovely email from one of the teachers saying how special it was. She was a lovely teacher who helped us all while we were struggling with some schooling. I think the best presents are the most thoughtful ones.

£50 voucher? WTF

Thortour · 13/11/2025 15:12

Nothing. Teachers don’t want gifts. Seriously. A card is all that’s needed.

wibdib · 13/11/2025 15:18

I’ve always made the DC make a hand made card and write something nice at Christmas and end of year for their teachers and TAs - usually worked well apart from the one year ds1 has a bitch of a teacher who hasn’t ever forgiven him for missing the first week of the school year (not by choice - he came down with nasty chicken pox on the last day of the summer holidays and had to wait over a week before being safe to return - he still had scabs over his face and body so you could see he hadn’t been taken away in holiday) - ds did a lovely card with some very heartfelt words for the TA while the teacher got a really rubbish card with just a square on the front while inside it had her name and his name at the bottom - he didn’t even write Merry Xmas in it, which basically summed up what her thought of her

Best present DS2 got for a teacher was two packs of white board markers for a teacher he really liked as he had noticed that she only had one old one that she used as the others she’d started with has gone walkabout. She was really touched that he had noticed and bought her some for Christmas when I apologised for it being a non-conventional present and they got really well used.

other presents that have gone down well have been a small robust collapsible umbrella as they are handy to have a spare of to live in a car or desk drawer or even as an emergency present. And if you know the teacher well and that they like booze and/or foodie things, a small bottle of dessert wine or PX sherry to have with their Xmas pud - which has the advantage of being relatively small to carry compared with a normal bottle of wine and you can get some nice ones really quite cheaply and nicer than if you’d spent the same amount on an ordinary bottle of wine.

Well, as a parent who has often been told that they wish more parents would be like me, I will give you this advice

No please I can’t 😂😂

Funniest thing I've read today! 🤣🤣🤣
