Hands down the Waitrose one for me! Its like an ad and a mini series in one

Probably explains why the John Lewis one is so shit this year!

Kevin on his stag do. The mankiny made me laugh

RowersDelight · 13/11/2025 16:17

Barbour is fab - Wallace and Gromit.

Ootofmymind · 13/11/2025 16:26

Waitrose by a country mile.
Worst is John Lewis by a thousand miles!

Sartre · 13/11/2025 16:29

Tesco’s is the most real. I don’t mind JL but agree with the thread on here about it being ominous, it does make you think someone has died and they really could have chosen a more well known club classic. M&S win the club classic stand off.

Waitrose’s is quite good, just watched the 4 min version. I like Morrisons best.

ObelixtheGaul · 13/11/2025 16:31

Not seen Waitrose. I do like Kevin the Carrot.
Like PP, not keen on Asda's Grinch, but rather enjoying Sainsbury's BFG one.

Nothing for me is living up to my all time favourite of a few years back, which was the BA one with teddy bears abroad and missing family.

The BFG one is sweet, but it irritates me because of the fact (as abovementioned) that she says "We'll make room for you - because it's Christmas".

Old curmudgeon that I am, I always find myself saying immediately afterwards in a deliberately puzzled way "We'll make room for you - because it's... the first half of November!" Grin

No idea why people like the John Lewis one.. and what’s all the crying about with these influencers over it. It’s not Christmassy it’s just shit. I’m similar age to the dad so I DO get the reminiscing but really that’s about it.

I love it & I think it is Christmassy. A teenage son being all awkward over a thoughtful gift. A gift that gave his dad a minute of reminiscence of a life before kids, for him to appreciate that but appreciate more that he gained more than he lost. With all the negativity about about males I thought it was a lovely ad. Spot on John Lewis

Politicians247UnderwearExtinguishingService · 13/11/2025 18:00

I'm sure I must be missing something important here with the Waitrose one, but it seems odd to me that Keira uses her real name, but Joe doesn't - when they're both well-known.

It would make much more sense to me if they either both used their real names (which would be weird, as they're presumably not a real-life couple) or both had 'character' names that were different to their real ones.

Mind, I know it kind of evolved from the start, but I still always find it a bit odd in Not Going Out, where Lee plays a character who is also called Lee, whereas his co-star Sally's character is called Lucy.

Perfectly put!

Negativity about males 😭😭

Everything is about them and their bloody rights 🙄

😄😄 I noticed that as well, it didnt make sense

I know that in sitcoms the main character often has the same name as the actor

But in this ad it makes no sense

Also love that they didnt try and make us weep - being funny was a good shout

Boots from the few I’ve seen so far - or should I say ‘Puss in Boots’

EffinMagicFairy · 13/11/2025 19:00

John Lewis so far me, yet to see others, resonates, clubbed to Alison Limerick back in the day and have the teenage son, DH still loves his music. Thought it was brilliant.

Andanotherone01 · 14/11/2025 23:01

The JL one makes me think of the ending of the film Aftersun and that makes me feel all depressed. Definitely didn’t hit the right note with me.

It's because in last years advert, where you had to work out who ate the red velvet pudding, he was called Phil. We all had t shirts saying "Steve did it/ the cat did it/ Phil did it", take your pick.

Ah, thank you, that makes a lot more sense now you explain it - I'd completely forgotten last year's ad!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 15/11/2025 09:12

Kevin can fuck right off. Why do the have to take something cute and mildly amusing and try and make it a "thing"? See also the Grinch(my dds favourite book) and Nightmare before Christmas(ds's favourite film)was quirky and cute, now they are everywhere.

Yeah it does! Keira is KEIRA KNIGHTLY! Shes like a mythical figure that no one expects to bump into, let alone get off with. If he was himself, then you'd just go, "oh two well known people have got together. Bit of an odd mix, but hey ho."

ObelixtheGaul · 15/11/2025 09:21

Having now seen Waitrose and Morrisons, I'd update my earlier response with a vote for Morrisons.
We all talk about supermarkets starting Christmas early and all that. I like that Morrisons made a thing of their suppliers/workers doing Christmas stuff when it isn't Christmas.

But surely then it would make more sense to choose an unknown actor for his role - the contrast would be even more stark in the point they're trying to make!

I know Keira is a much bigger global star than Joe, but both of them are well-known in British households.

There seems to be a subset of 'advert actors' who appear in countless commercials, but nobody ever really knows them as anything other than 'her from the Premier Inn ad' or 'him who sells dishwasher detergent' - they 'specialise' in playing ordinary, everyday non-famous people.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 15/11/2025 09:37

I love the Guinness one. Beautiful and simple.

Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters · 15/11/2025 09:38

@Politicians247UnderwearExtinguishingService - I thought it was because in Love Actually Liam Neeson's character says something about meeting Claudia Schiffer and then he does meet her?

That was my take on it anyway.

My DD worked at Waitrose last Xmas and they all had to wear shirts with the different names on - re who committed the crime. She's going back there this Xmas so who knows what they will do this year.

We've got t shirts with slogans from the ad, mine is "and they all ate happily ever after"

@Curlygirl06 - thanks will let her know
