Dad/Mum

I have just realised that I am so tired of hearing fathers described as 'dads' or mothers as 'mums'. I was discouraged from calling my parents mum and dad and called them Mummy and Daddy until D and M took over. I have never referred to either of them to other people except as 'my father', 'my mother' or 'my parents'. I really hate Mum and Dad.

Been a long day has it 😆

👍

PumpkinTwistyWindToots · 12/11/2025 19:29

Weird

Endofyear · 12/11/2025 19:29

Ok 🤷‍♀️

I might be missing your point but my 2 year old started calling me mum instead of mummy around 3 months ago and hasn’t stopped. I hate it. She still calls my husband daddy which seems unfair! I wouldn’t refer to my parents as my father or mother to others as it would sound a bit formal. I’d say my mum and my dad.

purpleme12 · 12/11/2025 19:30

Erm very niche post

Enko · 12/11/2025 19:30

Dh gets called Pops a lot as a in joke but if thebkids speaks to him directly its "dad" I am mum. Onoy "mother" when they want something.

I am happy with that.

For others I use the phrasing they use.

EveryKneeShallBow · 12/11/2025 19:30

I always find it weird when adults use mummy and daddy. It’s just what you get used to I suppose.

ShesTheAlbatross · 12/11/2025 19:31

You’re “so tired” of hearing people refers to their parents as “my dad/mum” rather than “my father/mother”?

Why though?

Hoppinggreen · 12/11/2025 19:31

Ok

JellyIegs · 12/11/2025 19:31

Adults saying mummy/daddy gives me the creeps.

I do like formal! I would never refer to my parents as 'my mum' or 'my dad' to others.

You’re missing a trick OP. I refer to my parents by their first names only. Anything else implies a level of emotion I’m not prepared to indulge in.

BauhausOfEliott · 12/11/2025 19:37

Right. Well, unfortunately the world doesn’t revolve around you, and other people don’t exist to fulfil your strangely specific requirements for how they refer their parents.

If you don’t like the word ‘mum’ then a site called Mumsnet is an odd place to hang around, really.

I'm only here for the conversations - have zero interest in kids.

Mummy and Daddy here. Or if they are feeling brave, Popsicle and Mumsicle 😀

You use their names?! That is a little over familiar for my liking.

Hollowvoice · 12/11/2025 19:45

If my children call me "mother" I respond with "yes child?"
Or sometimes "yes elder spawn?"

CleanShirt · 12/11/2025 19:46

Cool story, got any more?

AgnesX · 12/11/2025 19:48

Are you Irish by any chance. The only place where mummy and daddy was common; when I was growing up anyway.

I'm a bit confused. You hate hearing Mum & Dad yet you called them Mummy & Daddy until you called them Mum & Dad?

Pufft. I usually only speak to them through the butler to avoid all that unpleasant familiarity.

Caledoniablue · 12/11/2025 21:00

Eh? So you called your parent D and M before now referring to them only as Father and Mother?
Would love to hear what you make of me calling mine my Mam and my Da 🤣
What an odd post indeed...
